The connection between mass, environment and slow rotation in simulated galaxies

Recent observations from integral field spectroscopy (IFS) indicate that the fraction of galaxies that are slow rotators, FSRF_{\rm SR}, depends primarily on stellar mass, with no significant dependence on environment. We investigate these trends and the formation paths of slow rotators (SRs) using the EAGLE and Hydrangea hydro-dynamical simulations. EAGLE consists of several cosmological boxes of volumes up to (100Mpc)3(100\,\rm Mpc)^3, while Hydrangea consists of 2424 cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters and their environment. Together they provide a statistically significant sample in the stellar mass range 109.5M1012.3M10^{9.5}\,\rm M_{\odot}-10^{12.3}\,\rm M_{\odot}, of 16,35816,358 galaxies. We construct IFS-like cubes and measure stellar spin parameters, λR\lambda_{\rm R}, and ellipticities, allowing us to classify galaxies into slow/fast rotators as in observations. The simulations display a primary dependence of FSRF_{\rm SR} on stellar mass, with a weak dependence on environment. At fixed stellar mass, satellite galaxies are more likely to be SRs than centrals. FSRF_{\rm SR} shows a dependence on halo mass at fixed stellar mass for central galaxies, while no such trend is seen for satellites. We find that 70\approx 70% of SRs at z=0z=0 have experienced at least one merger with mass ratio 0.1\ge 0.1, with dry mergers being at least twice more common than wet mergers. Individual dry mergers tend to decrease λR\lambda_{\rm R}, while wet mergers mostly increase it. However, 3030% of SRs at z=0z=0 have not experienced mergers, and those inhabit halos with median spins twice smaller than the halos hosting the rest of the SRs. Thus, although the formation paths of SRs can be varied, dry mergers and/or halos with small spins dominate.Comment: Accepted for publications in MNRAS (20 pages, 17 main body, 1.5 appendix). Changes include analysis of the orbital angular momentum effect on lambdaR and slightly different ellipticity calculatio

An advertising aesthetic: Real beauty and visual impairment

    Get PDF
This article considers critical responses to disability in 20th-century Anglo-American advertisements from which a problematic advertising aesthetic emerges. The aesthetic is used to test the progressiveness of a recent trilogy of Dove advertisements that represents visual impairment. The conclusion is that while there has been much progress, the ableist advertising aesthetic of decades ago remains an issue in the 21st century. More specifically, the Dove advertisements are found to be underpinned by ocularcentrism, despite their apparent appreciation of visual impairment

Thromboembolism and anticoagulant therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic: interim clinical guidance from the anticoagulation forum

    Get PDF
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection that can, in severe cases, result in cytokine storm, systemic inflammatory response and coagulopathy that is prognostic of poor outcomes. While some, but not all, laboratory findings appear similar to sepsis-associated disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC), COVID-19- induced coagulopathy (CIC) appears to be more prothrombotic than hemorrhagic. It has been postulated that CIC may be an uncontrolled immunothrombotic response to COVID-19, and there is growing evidence of venous and arterial thromboembolic events in these critically ill patients. Clinicians around the globe are challenged with rapidly identifying reasonable diagnostic, monitoring and anticoagulant strategies to safely and effectively manage these patients. Thoughtful use of proven, evidence-based approaches must be carefully balanced with integration of rapidly emerging evidence and growing experience. The goal of this document is to provide guidance from the Anticoagulation Forum, a North American organization of anticoagulation providers, regarding use of anticoagulant therapies in patients with COVID-19. We discuss in-hospital and post-discharge venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention, treatment of suspected but unconfirmed VTE, laboratory monitoring of COVID-19, associated anticoagulant therapies, and essential elements for optimized transitions of care specific to patients with COVID-19

Responsible participation and housing: restoring democratic theory to the scene

Tensions between individual liberty and collective social justice characterise many advanced liberal societies. These tensions are reflected in the challenges posed for representative democracy both by participatory democratic practices and by the current emphasis on (so-called) responsible participation. Based on the example of ‘community’ housing associations in Scotland, this paper explores these tensions. It is argued that the critique of responsibility may have been over-stated – that, in particular, ‘community’ housing associations offer the basis for relatively more inclusive and effective processes of decision-making than council housing, which relies on the traditional processes and institutions of representative local government for its legitimacy

    A Study of the \eta \pi^{0} Spectrum and Search for a J^{PC} = 1^{-+} Exotic Meson

A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the of the ηπ0\eta \pi ^0 system (where ηγγ\eta \to \gamma \gamma) produced in the charge exchange reaction πpηπ0n\pi ^-p\to \eta \pi ^0n at an incident momentum of 18 GeV/c/c is presented as a function of ηπ0{\eta \pi ^0} invariant mass, mηπ0m_{\eta\pi^0}, and momentum transfer squared, tπηπt_{\pi^{-}\to\eta\pi}, from the incident π\pi^- to the outgoing ηπ0{\eta\pi ^0} system. SS, PP and DD waves were included in the PWA. The a0(980)a_0(980) and a2(1320)a_2(1320) states are clearly observed in the overall ηπ0{\eta\pi ^0} effective mass distribution as well as in the amplitudes associated with SS wave and DD waves respectively after partial wave decomposition. The observed distributions in moments (averages of spherical harmonics) were compared to the results from the PWA and the two are consistent. The distribution in tπηπt_{\pi^{-}\to\eta\pi} for individual DD waves associated with natural and unnatural parity exchange in the tt-channel are consistent with Regge phenomenology. Of particular interest in this study is the PP wave since this leads to an exotic JPC=1+J^{PC}=1^{-+} for the ηπ\eta \pi system. A PP wave is present in the data, however attempts to describe the mass dependence of the amplitude and phase motion with respect to the DD wave as a Breit-Wigner resonance are problematic. This has implications regarding the existence of a reported exotic JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} meson decaying into ηπ0\eta \pi^0 with a mass near 1.4 GeV/c2/c^2.Comment: 19 pages, 29 figures, to appear in Phys.
