Dust yields in clumpy SN shells: SN 1987A revisited
We present a study of the effects of clumping on the emergent spectral energy
distribution (SED) from dusty supernova (SN) shells illuminated by a diffuse
radiation source distributed throughout the medium. (...) The fully 3D
radiation transport problem is solved using a Monte Carlo code, MOCASSIN, and
we present a set of models aimed at investigating the sensitivity of the SEDs
to various clumping parameters. We find that, contrary to the predictions of
analytical prescriptions, the combination of an optical and IR observational
data set is sufficient to constrain dust masses even in the case where
optically thick clumps are present. Using both smoothly varying and clumped
grain density distributions, we obtain new estimates for the mass of dust
condensed by the Type II SN 1987A by fitting the optical and infrared
spectrophotometric data of Wooden et al. (1993) at two epochs (day 615 and day
775). (...) From our numerical models we derive dust masses for SN 1987A that
are comparable to previous analytic clumped graphite grain mass estimates, and
at least two orders of magnitude below the 0.1-0.3 Msol that have been
predicted to condense as dust grains in primordial core collapse supernova
ejecta. This low condensation efficiency for SN 1987A is in contrast to the
case of SN 2003gd, for which a dust condensation efficiency as large as 0.12

RXTE confirmation of the intermediate polar status of IGR J15094-6649
Aims. To establish the X-ray properties of the intermediate polar candidate
IGR J15094-6649 and therefore confirm its inclusion into the class.
Methods. 42 856 s of X-ray data from RXTE was analysed. Frequency analysis
was used to constrain temporal variations and spectral analysis used to
characterise the emission and absorption properties.
Results. A spin period of 809.7+-0.6 s is present, revealed as a complex
pulse profile whose modulation depth decreases with increasing X-ray energy.
The spectrum is well fitted by either a 19+-4 keV Bremsstrahlung or
Gamma=1.8+-0.1 power law, with an iron emission line feature and significant
absorption in each case.

Optimal Population Codes for Space: Grid Cells Outperform Place Cells
Rodents use two distinct neuronal coordinate systems to estimate their position: place fields in the hippocampus and grid fields in the entorhinal cortex. Whereas place cells spike at only one particular spatial location, grid cells fire at multiple sites that correspond to the points of an imaginary hexagonal lattice. We study how to best construct place and grid codes, taking the probabilistic nature of neural spiking into account. Which spatial encoding properties of individual neurons confer the highest resolution when decoding the animal’s position from the neuronal population response? A priori, estimating a spatial position from a grid code could be ambiguous, as regular periodic lattices possess translational symmetry. The solution to this problem requires lattices for grid cells with different spacings; the spatial resolution crucially depends on choosing the right ratios of these spacings across the population. We compute the expected error in estimating the position in both the asymptotic limit, using Fisher information, and for low spike counts, using maximum likelihood estimation. Achieving high spatial resolution and covering a large range of space in a grid code leads to a trade-off: the best grid code for spatial resolution is built of nested modules with different spatial periods, one inside the other, whereas maximizing the spatial range requires distinct spatial periods that are pairwisely incommensurate. Optimizing the spatial resolution predicts two grid cell properties that have been experimentally observed. First, short lattice spacings should outnumber long lattice spacings. Second, the grid code should be self-similar across different lattice spacings, so that the grid field always covers a fixed fraction of the lattice period. If these conditions are satisfied and the spatial “tuning curves” for each neuron span the same range of firing rates, then the resolution of the grid code easily exceeds that of the best possible place code with the same number of neurons
Existence of a Meromorphic Extension of Spectral Zeta Functions on Fractals
We investigate the existence of the meromorphic extension of the spectral
zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractals using the classical
results of Kigami and Lapidus (based on the renewal theory) and new results of
Hambly and Kajino based on the heat kernel estimates and other probabilistic
techniques. We also formulate conjectures which hold true in the examples that
have been analyzed in the existing literature
Early Dust Formation and a Massive Progenitor for SN 2011ja?
SN 2011ja was a bright (I = -18.3) Type II supernova occurring in the nearby
edge on spiral galaxy NGC 4945. Flat-topped and multi-peaked H-alpha and H-beta
spectral emission lines appear between 64 - 84 days post-explosion, indicating
interaction with a disc-like circumstellar medium inclined 30-45 degrees from
edge-on. After day 84 an increase in the H- and K-band flux along with heavy
attenuation of the red wing of the emission lines are strong indications of
early dust formation, likely located in the cool dense shell created between
the forward shock of the SN ejecta and the reverse shock created as the ejecta
plows into the existing CSM. Radiative transfer modeling reveals both ~1.5 x
10^-4 Msun of pre-existing dust located ~ 10^16.7 cm away and ~ 5 x 10^-5 Msun
of newly formed dust. Spectral observations after 1.5 years reveal the
possibility that the fading SN is located within a young (3-6 Myr) massive
stellar cluster, which when combined with tentative 56Ni mass estimates of 0.2
Msun may indicate a massive (> 25 Msun) progenitor for SN 2011ja.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS awaiting final referee repor
Progress in Turbulence Detection via GNSS Occultation Data
The increased availability of radio occultation (RO) data offers the ability to detect and study turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere. An analysis of how RO data can be used to determine the strength and location of turbulent regions is presented. This includes the derivation of a model for the power spectrum of the log-amplitude and phase fluctuations of the permittivity (or index of refraction) field. The bulk of the paper is then concerned with the estimation of the model parameters. Parameter estimators are introduced and some of their statistical properties are studied. These estimators are then applied to simulated log-amplitude RO signals. This includes the analysis of global statistics derived from a large number of realizations, as well as case studies that illustrate various specific aspects of the problem. Improvements to the basic estimation methods are discussed, and their beneficial properties are illustrated. The estimation techniques are then applied to real occultation data. Only two cases are presented, but they illustrate some of the salient features inherent in real data
Vulvar cancer in high-income countries: Increasing burden of disease
The aim of this study was to assess trends in the age-specific incidence of vulvar cancer in 13 high-income countries satisfying a priori conditions regarding the availability of cancer registry data over a 20-year period; these were Canada, the United States, nine European countries, Australia and Japan. Five-yearly incidence and population at risk were obtained from the International Agency for Research on Cancer's Cancer Incidence in Five Continents for the years 1988-1992 (Volume 7) to 2003-2007 (Volume 10). The 5-yearly average percent change (AvPC) over the period and standardised rate ratios (SRRs) for 2003-2007 versus 1988-1992 were used to assess changes in the age-standardised incidence rates of vulvar cancer for all ages, and for <60 years and 60+ years. During the study period, the 5-yearly AvPC across the 13 countries increased by 4.6% (p = 0.005) in women of all ages, and 11.6% (p = 0.02) in those <60 years. No change was observed in women aged 60+ years (5-yearly AvPC = 0.1%, p = 0.94). The SRR for 2003-2007 versus 1988-1992 was significantly elevated in women <60 years of age (SRR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.30-1.46), but not in women of 60+ years (SRR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.97-1.05). The increase in incidence in women <60 years of age drove a significant increase in the overall SRR in women of all ages (SRR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.11-1.18). Some differences in the specific findings at the individual country level were observed. The findings are consistent with changing sexual behaviours and increasing levels of exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV) in cohorts born around/after about 1950, but younger cohorts offered HPV vaccination are likely to receive some protection against developing vulvar cancer in the future
Transdiagnostic treatment of bipolar disorder and comorbid anxiety using the Unified Protocol for Emotional Disorders: A pilot feasibility and acceptability trial
BACKGROUND
Comorbid anxiety in bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with greater illness severity, reduced treatment response, and greater impairment. Treating anxiety in the context of BD is crucial for improving illness course and outcomes. The current study examined the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of the Unified Protocol (UP), a transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy, as an adjunctive treatment to pharmacotherapy for BD and comorbid anxiety disorders.
METHODS
Twenty-nine patients with BD and at least one comorbid anxiety disorder were randomized to pharmacotherapy treatment-as-usual (TAU) or TAU with 18 sessions of the UP (UP+TAU). All patients completed assessments every four weeks to track symptoms, functioning, emotion regulation and temperament. Linear mixed-model regressions were conducted to track symptom changes over time and to examine the relationship between emotion-related variables and treatment response.
RESULTS
Satisfaction ratings were equivalent for both treatment groups. Patients in the UP+TAU group evidenced significantly greater reductions over time in anxiety and depression symptoms (Cohen's d's>0.80). Baseline levels of neuroticism, perceived affective control, and emotion regulation ability predicted magnitude of symptom change for the UP+TAU group only. Greater change in perceived control of emotions and emotion regulation skills predicted greater change in anxiety related symptoms.
LIMITATIONS
This was a pilot feasibility and acceptability trial; results should be interpreted with caution.
CONCLUSIONS
Treatment with the UP+TAU was rated high in patient satisfaction, and resulted in significantly greater improvement on indices of anxiety and depression relative to TAU. Drivers of European bat population change: a review reveals evidence gaps
Bat populations are thought to have suffered significant declines in the past century throughout Europe. Fortunately, there are some signs of recovery; for instance, of the 11 species monitored in the UK, population trends of five are increasing. The drivers of past losses and recent trends are unclear; identifying them will enable targeted conservation strategies to support further recovery.
We review the evidence linking proposed drivers to impacts on bat populations in Europe, using the results of a previous cross‐taxa semi‐quantitative assessment as a framework. Broadly, the drivers reviewed relate to land‐use practices, climate change, pollution, development and infrastructure, and human disturbance. We highlight where evidence gaps or conflicts present barriers to successful conservation and review emerging opportunities to address these gaps.
We find that the relative importance or impacts of the potential drivers of bat population change are not well understood or quantified, with conflicting evidence in many cases. To close key gaps in the evidence for responses of bat populations to environmental change, future studies should focus on the impacts of climate change, urbanisation, offshore wind turbines, and water pollution, as well as on mitigation measures and the synergistic effects of putative drivers.
To increase available evidence of drivers of bat population change, we propose utilising advances in monitoring tools and statistical methods, together with robust quantitative assessment of conservation interventions to mitigate threats and enable the effective conservation of these protected species
