    Information is provided on the taxonomy and distribution of 71 taxa of naturalised or naturalising plants newly recorded for the state of New South Wales during the period 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2003. Of these taxa, 32 are new records for Australia (prefaced with a †). Plants formerly identified as Pinus nigra var. corsicana are now considered to be Pinus halepensis; Cylindropuntia arbuscula is Cylindropuntia kleiniae, Cylindropuntia tunicata is Cylindropuntia rosea, Abrus precatorius subp. precatorius is now Abrus precatorius subsp. africanus and Cotoneaster ?horizontalis is Cotoneaster microphyllus. Further field studies have revealed that Cylindropuntia leptocaulis, Cylindropuntia spinosior, Hypericum kouytchense and Chamaesyce ophthalmica are more widespread than previously thought

    First evidence is presented for Leishmania (Viannia) spp. dissemination and tissue tropism in the domestic dog. Using PCR and histology, parasites were detected in the conjunctiva, lung, lymph nodes and ovaries of 2 naturally infected Peruvian dogs. The detection of parasites in the blood indicates that parasite dissemination to those organs may have been haematogenous

    Affordable Double-Reference Approach for Simulating Electrified Pt(111)/Water Interfaces

    The electrified solid-liquid interface plays an essential role in many renewable energy-related applications, including hydrogen production and utilization. Limitations in computational modelling of the electrified solid-liquid interface have held back the understanding of its properties at the atomic-scale level. In this study, we applied the grand canonical density functional theory (GC-DFT) combined with a hybrid implicit/explicit solvation model to reinvestigate the widely studied electrified platinum-water interface affordably. This GC-DFT method was validated by successfully reproducing the experimental potential of zero charge (PZC) of the Pt(111)-water interface. The calculated capacitances of the Pt(111)-water interface over the applied bias potential closely match the experimental and previous theoretical data from expensive ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. The structural analysis of the interface models reveals that the applied bias potential can significantly affect the Pt(111)-water atomic interface configurations. The orientation of the water molecules next to the Pt(111) surface is vital for correctly describing the PZC and capacitance. Additionally, our GC-DFT results confirm that the absorption of the hydrogen atom under applied bias potential can significantly affect the electrified interfacial properties. The developed affordable GC-DFT approach, therefore, offers an efficient and accurate means to enhance the understanding of electrified solid-liquid interfaces.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, supporting information, still under revie

    Long-Term Effects of Placental Growth on Overweight and Body Composition

    Obesity is programmed in utero and small babies generally have small placentas. In some circumstances, an undernourished fetus can expand its placental surface to extract more nutrients. We hypothesize that this results in an imbalanced nutrient supply to the fetus leading to obesity. To determine whether placental size determines overweight and body composition, we studied 2003 subjects in adult life. Associations between placental surface area and indices of overweight were restricted to people who carried the Pro12Pro genotype of the PPARγ2 gene. For every 1 SD increase in placental surface area, the odds ratio for overweight was 1.37 (95% CI 1.10 to 1.71; P = 0.005). Expansion of the placental surface in compensation for fetal undernutrition increases the risk of overweight and a higher body fat percentage in people carrying the Pro12Pro genotype.     Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are biological nanoparticles with important roles in intercellular communication, and potential as drug delivery vehicles. Here we demonstrate a role for the glycolytic enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) in EV assembly and secretion. We observe high levels of GAPDH binding to the outer surface of EVs via a phosphatidylserine binding motif (G58), which promotes extensive EV clustering. Further studies in a Drosophila EV biogenesis model reveal that GAPDH is required for the normal generation of intraluminal vesicles in endosomal compartments, and promotes vesicle clustering. Fusion of the GAPDH-derived G58 peptide to dsRNA-binding motifs enables highly efficient loading of small interfering RNA (siRNA) onto the EV surface. Such vesicles efficiently deliver siRNA to multiple anatomical regions of the brain in a Huntington's disease mouse model after systemic injection, resulting in silencing of the huntingtin gene in different regions of the brain
