    Preparing to Take the Field: A Temporal Exploration of Stress, Emotion, and Coping in Elite Cricket

    The purpose of this study was to explore the stress, emotion, and coping (SEC) experiences of elite cricketers leading up to and on the day of their first competitive fixture of the season. Four elite male cricketers (M = 21.25, SD = 1.5) completed Stress and Emotion Diaries (SEDs) for the 7-day period leading up to and on the day of their first competitive fixture of the season. We then interviewed the cricketers to explore the content of the SEDs in more detail. We used semistructured interviews to glean insight into the stressors, cognitions, emotions, coping strategies, and behaviors. Inductive and deductive content data analysis provided a holistic and temporal exploration of the SEC process underpinned by the cognitive-motivational-relational theory of emotions (Lazarus, 1999). The results highlighted the ongoing and continuous nature of the SEC process while illustrating the coping strategies the cricketers used leading up to and on the day of competition

    Ultracold atoms in multiple-radiofrequency dressed adiabatic potentials

    We present the first experimental demonstration of a multiple-radiofrequency dressed potential for the configurable magnetic confinement of ultracold atoms. We load cold 87^{87}Rb atoms into a double well potential with an adjustable barrier height, formed by three radiofrequencies applied to atoms in a static quadrupole magnetic field. Our multiple-radiofrequency approach gives precise control over the double well characteristics, including the depth of individual wells and the height of the barrier, and enables reliable transfer of atoms between the available trapping geometries. We have characterised the multiple-radiofrequency dressed system using radiofrequency spectroscopy, finding good agreement with the eigenvalues numerically calculated using Floquet theory. This method creates trapping potentials that can be reconfigured by changing the amplitudes, polarizations and frequencies of the applied dressing fields, and easily extended with additional dressing frequencies.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Learning to be inflexible: Enhanced attentional biases in Parkinson\u27s disease

    Impaired attentional flexibility is considered to be one of the core cognitive deficits in Parkinson\u27s disease (PD). However, the mechanisms that underlie this impairment are contested. Progress in resolving this dispute has also been hindered by the fact that cognitive deficits in PD are heterogeneous; therefore, it is unclear whether attentional impairments are only present in a subgroup of patients. Here, we demonstrate that what differentiates PD patients from age-matched controls is an inability to shift attention away from previously relevant information (perseveration) and an inability to shift attention towards previously irrelevant information (learned irrelevance). In contrast, there was no evidence that PD patients, compared to controls, were impaired in being able to appropriately attend to, or ignore, novel information. Furthermore, when patients were stratified according to their level of executive impairment, the executively impaired group showed a selective deficit in set formation compared to the unimpaired group, a behavioural pattern reminiscent of cortical dopamine depletion. Cumulatively, these results suggest that cognitive inflexibility in PD relates to a specific form of attentional dysfunction, in which learned attentional biases cannot be overcome

    Cloud benchmarking for maximising performance of scientific applications

    This research was pursued under the EPSRC grant, EP/K015745/1, a Royal Society Industry Fellowship and an AWS Education Research grant.How can applications be deployed on the cloud to achieve maximum performance? This question is challenging to address with the availability of a wide variety of cloud Virtual Machines (VMs) with different performance capabilities. The research reported in this paper addresses the above question by proposing a six step benchmarking methodology in which a user provides a set of weights that indicate how important memory, local communication, computation and storage related operations are to an application. The user can either provide a set of four abstract weights or eight fine grain weights based on the knowledge of the application. The weights along with benchmarking data collected from the cloud are used to generate a set of two rankings - one based only on the performance of the VMs and the other takes both performance and costs into account. The rankings are validated on three case study applications using two validation techniques. The case studies on a set of experimental VMs highlight that maximum performance can be achieved by the three top ranked VMs and maximum performance in a cost-effective manner is achieved by at least one of the top three ranked VMs produced by the methodology.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Association between MAPT haplotype and memory function in patients with Parkinson's disease and healthy aging individuals.

    Genetic variation is associated with differences in the function of the brain as well as its susceptibility to disease. The common H1 haplotypic variant of the microtubule-associated protein tau gene (MAPT) has been related to an increased risk for Parkinson's disease (PD). Furthermore, among PD patients, H1 homozygotes have an accelerated progression to dementia. We investigated the neurocognitive correlates of MAPT haplotypes using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thirty-seven nondemented patients with PD (19 H1/H1, 18 H2 carriers) and 40 age-matched controls (21 H1/H1, 19 H2 carriers) were scanned during performance of a picture memory encoding task. Behaviorally, H1 homozygosity was associated with impaired picture recognition memory in PD patients and control subjects. These impairments in the H1 homozygotes were accompanied by an altered blood-oxygen level-dependent response in the medial temporal lobe during successful memory encoding. Additional age-related differences in blood-oxygen level-dependent response were observed in the medial temporal lobes of H1 homozygotes with PD. These results suggest that common variation in MAPT is not only associated with the dementia of PD but also differences in the neural circuitry underlying aspects of cognition in normal aging.This work was funded by Parkinson's UK, the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust (088324), and the NIHR Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre (RG64473).     The role of the amygdala during emotional processing in Huntington's disease: from pre-manifest to late stage disease.

    BACKGROUND: Deficits in emotional processing can be detected in the pre-manifest stage of Huntington's disease and negative emotion recognition has been identified as a predictor of clinical diagnosis. The underlying neuropathological correlates of such deficits are typically established using correlative structural MRI studies. This approach does not take into consideration the impact of disruption to the complex interactions between multiple brain circuits on emotional processing. Therefore, exploration of the neural substrates of emotional processing in pre-manifest HD using fMRI connectivity analysis may be a useful way of evaluating the way brain regions interrelate in the period prior to diagnosis. METHODS: We investigated the impact of predicted time to disease onset on brain activation when participants were exposed to pictures of faces with angry and neutral expressions, in 20 pre-manifest HD gene carriers and 23 healthy controls. On the basis of the results of this initial study went on to look at amygdala dependent cognitive performance in 79 Huntington's disease patients from a cross-section of disease stages (pre-manifest to late disease) and 26 healthy controls, using a validated theory of mind task: "the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test" which has been previously been shown to be amygdala dependent. RESULTS: Psychophysiological interaction analysis identified reduced connectivity between the left amygdala and right fusiform facial area in pre-manifest HD gene carriers compared to controls when viewing angry compared to neutral faces. Change in PPI connectivity scores correlated with predicted time to disease onset (r=0.45, p<0.05). Furthermore, performance on the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test" correlated negatively with proximity to disease onset and became progressively worse with each stage of disease. CONCLUSION: Abnormalities in the neural networks underlying social cognition and emotional processing can be detected prior to clinical diagnosis in Huntington's disease. Connectivity between the amygdala and other brain regions is impacted by the disease process in pre-manifest HD and may therefore be a useful way of identifying participants who are approaching a clinical diagnosis.     Health-related quality of life, functional impairment and comorbidity in people with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional study

    Objectives: To determine the associations between comorbidities, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and functional impairment in people with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) in primary care.Design: Cross-sectional analysis at 5-year follow-up in a prospective cohort study.Setting: Thirty-two general practitioner surgeries in England.Participants: 1008 participants with CKD stage 3 (of 1741 people recruited at baseline in the Renal Risk in Derby study) who survived to 5?years and had complete follow-up data for HRQoL and functional status (FS).Primary and secondary outcome measures HRQoL assessed using the 5-level EQ-5D version (EQ-5D-5L, with domains of mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression and index value using utility scores calculated from the English general population), and FS using the Karnofsky Performance Status scale (functional impairment defined as Karnofksy score ?70). Comorbidity was defined by self-reported or doctor-diagnosed condition, disease-specific medication or blood result.Results: Mean age was 75.8 years. The numbers reporting some problems in EQ-5D-5L domains were: 582 (57.7%) for mobility, 166 (16.5%) for self-care, 466 (46.2%) for usual activities, 712 (70.6%) for pain/discomfort and 319 (31.6%) for anxiety/depression. Only 191 (18.9%) reported no problems in any domain. HRQoL index values showed greater variation among those with lower FS (eg, for those with Karnofsky score of 60, the median (IQR) EQ-5D index value was 0.45 (0.24 to 0.68) compared with 0.94 (0.86 to 1) for those with Karnofsky score of 90). Overall, 234 (23.2%) had functional impairment.In multivariable logistic regression models, functional impairment was independently associated with experiencing problems for all EQ-5D-5L domains (mobility: OR 16.87 (95% CI 8.70 to 32.79, p < 0.001, self-care: OR 13.08 (95% CI 8.46 to 20.22), p< 0.001, usual activities: OR 8.27 (95% CI 5.43 to 12.58), p< 0.001, pain/discomfort: OR 2.94 (95% CI 1.86 to 4.67), p< 0.001, anxiety/depression: 3.08 (95% CI 2.23 to 4.27), p< 0.001). Higher comorbidity count and obesity were independently associated with problems in mobility, self-care, usual activities and pain/discomfort: for three or more comorbidities versus none: (mobility: OR 2.10 (95% CI 1.08 to 4.10, p for trend 0.002), self-care: OR 2.64 (95% CI 0.72 to 9.67, p for trend 0.05), usual activities: OR 4.20 (95% CI 2.02 to 8.74, p for trend < 0.001), pain/discomfort: OR 3.06 (95% CI 1.63 to 5.73, p for trend < 0.001)), and for obese (body mass index (BMI) ?30?kg/m2) versus BMI < 25?kg/m2: (mobility: OR 2.44 (95% CI 1.61 to 3.69, p for trend < 0.001), self-care: OR 1.98 (95% CI 1.06 to 3.71, p for trend 0.003), usual activities: OR 1.82 (95% CI 1.19 to 2.76, p for trend 0.019), pain/discomfort: OR 2.37 (95% CI 1.58 to 3.55, p for trend < 0.001)). Female sex, lower FS and lower educational attainment were independently associated with anxiety/depression (ORs 1.60 (95% CI 1.18 to 2.16, p 0.002), 3.08 (95% CI 2.23 to 4.27, p< 0.001) and 1.67 (95% CI 1.10 to 2.52, p 0.009), respectively). Older age, higher comorbidity count, albuminuria (?30?mg/mmol vs < 3?mg/mmol), lower educational attainment (no formal qualifications vs degree level) and obesity were independently associated with functional impairment (ORs 1.07 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.09, p< 0.001), 2.18 (95% CI 0.80 to 5.96, p for trend < 0.001), 1.74 (95% CI 0.82 to 3.68, p for trend 0.005), 2.08 (95% CI 1.26 to 3.41, p for trend < 0.001) and 4.23 (95% CI 2.48 to 7.20), respectively).Conclusions: The majority of persons with mild-to-moderate CKD reported reductions in at least one HRQoL domain, which were independently associated with comorbidities, obesity and functional impairment

    Integrating knowledge on green infrastructure, health and well-being in ageing populations: principles for research and practice

    Ageing and urbanisation pose significant challenges for public health and urban planning. Ageing populations are at particular risk from hazards arising from urbanisation processes, some of which are in turn exacerbated by climate change. One approach for mitigating the negative effects of urbanisation on ageing populations is the leveraging of the beneficial effects of urban green infrastructure as a public health intervention in the planning process. We assessed the potential of available theoretical frameworks to provide the context for such leverage. This involved active engagement with academics and practitioners specialising in ageing, green infrastructure and health and well-being through a knowledge-brokering approach. We concluded that an integrated and comprehensive framework on the socio-cultural-ecological determinants of health is lacking. To address this, we present a set of principles for overcoming challenges to knowledge integration when working at the intersection of green infrastructure, ageing, health and well-being. Our findings—and the co-production process used to generate them—have wider significance for trans-disciplinary research into the benefits of the natural environment to human health and well-being as well as other complex and interconnected topics associated with global grand challenges
