    The Role of Kinetic Energy Flux in the Convective Urca Process

    The previous analysis of the convective Urca neutrino loss process in degenerate, convective, quasi-static, carbon-burning cores by Barkat and Wheeler omitted specific consideration of the role of the kinetic energy flux. The arguments of Barkat and Wheeler that steady-state composition gradients exist are correct, but chemical equilibrium does not result in net cooling. Barkat and Wheeler included a "work" term that effectively removed energy from the total energy budget that could only have come from the kinetic energy, which must remain positive. Consideration of the kinetic energy in the thermodynamics of the convective Urca process shows that the convective Urca neutrinos reduce the rate of increase of entropy that would otherwise be associated with the input of nuclear energy and slow down the convective current, but, unlike the "thermal" Urca process do not reduce the entropy or temperature.Comment: 16 pages, AAS LaTex, in press, Astrophysical Journal, September 20, Vol 52

    Carbon-poor stellar cores as supernova progenitors

    Exploring stellar models which ignite carbon off-center (in the mass range of about 1.05 - 1.25 Msun, depending on the carbon mass fraction) we find that they may present an interesting SN I progenitor scenario, since whereas in the standard scenario runaway always takes place at the same density of about 2 X 10^9 gr/cm^3, in our case, due to the small amount of carbon ignited, we get a whole range of densities from 1 X 10^9 up to 6 X 10^9 gr/cm^3. These results could contribute in resolving the emerging recognition that at least some diversity among SNe I exists, since runaway at various central densities is expected to yield various outcomes in terms of the velocities and composition of the ejecta, which should be modeled and compared to observations.Comment: 49 pages, 20 figure

Children raised in an English-speaking environment easily distinguish between the phonemes /la/ and /ra/, whereas those growing up in Japan find it increasingly difficult 3 . Passive exposure of young rodents to a variety of sound features reveals a cascading series of developmental windows that open and close shortly after hearing onset to define the persistent and specific influences of early experience on the functional organization of auditory cortex Motivated by the well known binocular interactions shaped by experience in developing visual cortex 7-9 , we used in vivo neurophysiological recordings to determine whether mouse A1 also exhibits a critical period for tonotopic map plasticity induced through passive tone exposure, and whether such plasticity is present in the auditory thalamus (ventral medial geniculate body, MGBv). We then isolated the connection between MGBv and primary auditory cortex (A1) (ref. 10) in an acute brain slice preparation 11 and used voltage-sensitive dye imaging (VSDI) techniques in vitro. We mapped A1 responses to electrical stimulation of discrete sites in MGBv across early postnatal days (P8-20), following tone-rearing or gene manipulation. Our results reveal a critical period for acoustically driven topographic plasticity at thalamocortical connections in mouse A1. RESULTS Tone exposure modifies tonotopic maps in A1, but not MGBv The auditory system is tonotopically organized 10 such that tones of similar frequency activate neighboring neurons at each station along the pathway. Given that rats show experience-dependent tonotopic map reorganization following passive tone exposure during the second postnatal week 2,12 , we first used high-density in vivo mapping to delineate A1 tonotopy in young adult mice 13 that were reared either in typical acoustic environments To determine whether remapping in A1 could be explained by a shifted frequency representation in the principal subcortical input source, we also examined best frequency distributions in the MGBv. We inserted a multichannel silicon probe at an angle that matched the plane of section used in subsequent thalamocortical slice experiment

    Estimating the number of components of a multicomponent nonstationary signal using the short-term time-frequency Rényi entropy

    This article proposes a method for estimating the local number of signals components using the short term Rényi entropy of signals in the time-frequency plane. (Additional details can be found in the comprehensive book on Time-Frequency Signal Analysis and Processing (see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/isbn/0080443354). In addition, the most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia, and then continuously updated).The time-frequency Rényi entropy provides a measure of complexity of a nonstationary multicomponent signal in the time-frequency plane. When the complexity of a signal corresponds to the number of its components, then this information is measured as the Rényi entropy of the time-frequency distribution (TFD) of the signal. This article presents a solution to the problem of detecting the number of components that are present in short-time interval of the signal TFD, using the short-term Rényi entropy. The method is automatic and it does not require a prior information about the signal. The algorithm is applied on both synthetic and real data, using a quadratic separable kernel TFD. The results confirm that the short-term Rényi entropy can be an effective tool for estimating the local number of components present in the signal. The key aspect of selecting a suitable TFD is also discussed

    Robusna procedura za umetanje vodenog žiga u sliku zasnovana na Hermitovoj projekcijskoj metodi

    A procedure for combined image watermarking and compression, based on the Hermite projection method is proposed. The Hermite coefficients obtained by using the Hermite expansion are used for watermark embedding. The image can be efficiently reconstructed by using a set of Hermite coefficients that is quite smaller than the number of original ones. Hence, the watermark embedding is actually done in the compressed domain, while maintaining still high image quality (measured by high PSNR). The efficiency of the proposed procedure is proven experimentally, showing high robustness even for very strong standard attacks. Moreover, the method is robust not only to the standard attacks, but to the geometrical attacks, as well. The proposed approach can be suitable for different copyright and ownership protection purposes, especially in real-applications that require image compression, such as multimedia and Internet applications, remote sensing and satellite imaging.U radu je predložena procedura za umetanje vodenog žiga u sliku i kompresiju slike zasnovana na Hermitovoj projekcijskoj metodi. Odgovarajući koeficijenti, dobiveni kao rezultat primjene razvoja slike u red Hermitovih funkcija, korišteni su za umetanje vodenog žiga watermark). S obzirom na to da se slika može efikasno rekonstruirati korištenjem znatno manjeg broja Hermitovih koeficijenata u odnosu na broj originalnih koeficijenata slike, umetanje vodenog žiga zapravo je provedeno u domeni kompresije, uz očuvanje visoke kvalitete slike (velika vrijednost PSNR). Učinkovitost predložene procedure ispitana je eksperimentalno i pokazuje značajnu otpornost na uobičajene napade. Osim uobičajenih, procedura pokazuje robusnost i na geometrijske napade. Predloženi pristup može biti korišten u različitim aplikacijama za zaštitu autorskih prava, naročito u aplikacijama koje ujedno zahtijevaju i kompresiju slike, kao što su multimedijske i internetske aplikacije, daljinsko očitavanje podataka i satelitska snimanja

    Care of Mechanical Ventilated Patients in General Ward: Nurses Perspective

    Aim: This study aimed to explore the care of mechanically ventilated patients in general wards from the nurses' perspective.Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study using a self administered questionnaire was given to the nurses with a purposive convenient sampling method in adult patients from medical, surgical and isolation units in studied hospital in KSA. Results: 149 participants from general units represents various years of experiences shared their perception on the knowledge and competencies (M= 3.38±.62) the support they received (M= 2.41±.78), their satisfaction and confidence (M= 2.86±.81) and the resources provided (M= 2.44 ±.69) for caring MV patients in their general unit revealed the total mean in each categories were in the state of either neutral or disagree with the items given. The participants admitted that the found themselves are competent in performing suctioning with aseptic technique and ability to identify the possible complications confidently. However the participant concluded that it was inadequate support for them, staffing ratio, equipment and facilities was inappropriate which leads to dissatisfaction and less confident in caring for MV patients.Conclusion: This study concludes that caring for patients in general ward causing dissatisfaction among the staff and place patients in risk. Hospital administration needs to ensure that general ward nurses are trained accordingly, provide adequate staffing ratio, and prepare the physical environment and suitable equipment to care for MV patients in general ward

    Supernova 2007bi as a pair-instability explosion

    Stars with initial masses 10 M_{solar} < M_{initial} < 100 M_{solar} fuse progressively heavier elements in their centres, up to inert iron. The core then gravitationally collapses to a neutron star or a black hole, leading to an explosion -- an iron-core-collapse supernova (SN). In contrast, extremely massive stars (M_{initial} > 140 M_{solar}), if such exist, have oxygen cores which exceed M_{core} = 50 M_{solar}. There, high temperatures are reached at relatively low densities. Conversion of energetic, pressure-supporting photons into electron-positron pairs occurs prior to oxygen ignition, and leads to a violent contraction that triggers a catastrophic nuclear explosion. Tremendous energies (>~ 10^{52} erg) are released, completely unbinding the star in a pair-instability SN (PISN), with no compact remnant. Transitional objects with 100 M_{solar} < M_{initial} < 140 M_{solar}, which end up as iron-core-collapse supernovae following violent mass ejections, perhaps due to short instances of the pair instability, may have been identified. However, genuine PISNe, perhaps common in the early Universe, have not been observed to date. Here, we present our discovery of SN 2007bi, a luminous, slowly evolving supernova located within a dwarf galaxy (~1% the size of the Milky Way). We measure the exploding core mass to be likely ~100 M_{solar}, in which case theory unambiguously predicts a PISN outcome. We show that >3 M_{solar} of radioactive 56Ni were synthesized, and that our observations are well fit by PISN models. A PISN explosion in the local Universe indicates that nearby dwarf galaxies probably host extremely massive stars, above the apparent Galactic limit, perhaps resulting from star formation processes similar to those that created the first stars in the Universe.Comment: Accepted version of the paper appearing in Nature, 462, 624 (2009), including all supplementary informatio

    A home calendar and recall method of last menstrual period for estimating gestational age in rural Bangladesh: a validation study

    Background: The best method of gestational age assessment is by ultrasound in the first trimester; however, this method is impractical in large field trials in rural areas. Our objective was to assess the validity of gestational age estimated from prospectively collected date of last menstrual period (LMP) using crown-rump length (CRL) measured in early pregnancy by ultrasound. Methods: As part of a large, cluster-randomized, controlled trial in rural Bangladesh, we collected dates of LMP by recall and as marked on a calendar every 5 weeks in women likely to become pregnant. Among those with a urinetest confirmed pregnancy, a subset with gestational age of &lt;15 weeks (n = 353) were enrolled for ultrasound follow-up to measure CRL. We compared interview-assessed LMP with CRL gestational age estimates and classification of preterm, term, and post-term births. Results: LMP-based gestational age was higher than CRL by a mean (SD) of 2.8 (10.7) days; differences varied by maternal education and preterm birth (P &lt; 0.05). Lin\u2019s concordance correlation coefficient was good at ultrasound [0.63 (95 % CI 0.56, 0.69)] and at birth [0.77 (95 % CI 0.73, 0.81)]. Validity of classifying preterm birth was high but post-term was lower, with specificity of 96 and 89 % and sensitivity of 86 and 67 %, respectively. Results were similar by parity. Conclusions: Prospectively collected LMP provided a valid estimate of gestational age and preterm birth in a rural, low-income setting and may be a suitable alternative to ultrasound in programmatic settings and large field trials.     Formation of Supermassive Black Holes

    Evidence shows that massive black holes reside in most local galaxies. Studies have also established a number of relations between the MBH mass and properties of the host galaxy such as bulge mass and velocity dispersion. These results suggest that central MBHs, while much less massive than the host (~ 0.1%), are linked to the evolution of galactic structure. In hierarchical cosmologies, a single big galaxy today can be traced back to the stage when it was split up in hundreds of smaller components. Did MBH seeds form with the same efficiency in small proto-galaxies, or did their formation had to await the buildup of substantial galaxies with deeper potential wells? I briefly review here some of the physical processes that are conducive to the evolution of the massive black hole population. I will discuss black hole formation processes for `seed' black holes that are likely to place at early cosmic epochs, and possible observational tests of these scenarios.Comment: To appear in The Astronomy and Astrophysics Review.
