Visual Exploration and Object Recognition by Lattice Deformation
Mechanisms of explicit object recognition are often difficult to investigate and require stimuli with controlled features whose expression can be manipulated in a precise quantitative fashion. Here, we developed a novel method (called “Dots”), for generating visual stimuli, which is based on the progressive deformation of a regular lattice of dots, driven by local contour information from images of objects. By applying progressively larger deformation to the lattice, the latter conveys progressively more information about the target object. Stimuli generated with the presented method enable a precise control of object-related information content while preserving low-level image statistics, globally, and affecting them only little, locally. We show that such stimuli are useful for investigating object recognition under a naturalistic setting – free visual exploration – enabling a clear dissociation between object detection and explicit recognition. Using the introduced stimuli, we show that top-down modulation induced by previous exposure to target objects can greatly influence perceptual decisions, lowering perceptual thresholds not only for object recognition but also for object detection (visual hysteresis). Visual hysteresis is target-specific, its expression and magnitude depending on the identity of individual objects. Relying on the particular features of dot stimuli and on eye-tracking measurements, we further demonstrate that top-down processes guide visual exploration, controlling how visual information is integrated by successive fixations. Prior knowledge about objects can guide saccades/fixations to sample locations that are supposed to be highly informative, even when the actual information is missing from those locations in the stimulus. The duration of individual fixations is modulated by the novelty and difficulty of the stimulus, likely reflecting cognitive demand
The COGs (context, object, and goals) in multisensory processing
Our understanding of how perception operates in real-world environments has been substantially advanced by studying both multisensory processes and “top-down” control processes influencing sensory processing via activity from higher-order brain areas, such as attention, memory, and expectations. As the two topics have been traditionally studied separately, the mechanisms orchestrating real-world multisensory processing remain unclear. Past work has revealed that the observer’s goals gate the influence of many multisensory processes on brain and behavioural responses, whereas some other multisensory processes might occur independently of these goals. Consequently, other forms of top-down control beyond goal dependence are necessary to explain the full range of multisensory effects currently reported at the brain and the cognitive level. These forms of control include sensitivity to stimulus context as well as the detection of matches (or lack thereof) between a multisensory stimulus and categorical attributes of naturalistic objects (e.g. tools, animals). In this review we discuss and integrate the existing findings that demonstrate the importance of such goal-, object- and context-based top-down control over multisensory processing. We then put forward a few principles emerging from this literature review with respect to the mechanisms underlying multisensory processing and discuss their possible broader implications
The effect of neutral helper lipids on the structure of cationic lipid monolayers
Successful drug delivery via lipid-based systems has often been aided by the incorporation of ‘helper lipids’. While these neutral lipids enhance the effectiveness of cationic lipid-based delivery formulations, many questions remain about the nature of their beneficial effects. The structure of monolayers of the cationic lipid dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB) alone, and mixed with a neutral helper lipid, either diolelyphosphatidylethanolamine or cholesterol at a 1 : 1 molar ratio was investigated at the air–water interface using a combination of surface pressure–area isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) and specular neutron reflectivity in combination with contrast variation. BAM studies showed that while pure DODAB and DODAB with cholesterol monolayers showed fairly homogeneous surfaces, except in the regions of phase transition, monolayers of DODAB with diolelyphosphatidylethanolamine were, in contrast, inhomogeneous exhibiting irregular bean-shaped domains throughout. Neutron reflectivity data showed that while the thickness of the DODAB monolayer increased from 17 to 24 Å as it was compressed from a surface pressure of 5–40 mN m(−1), the thickness of the helper lipid-containing monolayers, over the same range of surface pressures, was relatively invariant at between 25 and 27 Å. In addition, the monolayers containing diolelyphosphatidylethanolamine were found to be more heavily hydrated than the monolayers of cationic lipid, alone or in combination with cholesterol, with hydration levels of 18 molecules of water per molecule of lipid being recorded for the diolelyphosphatidylethanolamine-containing monolayers at a surface pressure of 30 mN m(−1) compared with only six and eight molecules of water per molecule of lipid for the pure DODAB monolayer and the cholesterol-containing DODAB monolayer, respectively
