Manufacturing and characterization of sustainable and recyclable wood-polypropylene biocomposites:Multiprocessing-properties-structure relationships

In this study, sustainable polymeric materials with a polypropylene matrix reinforced with wood waste were developed for structural applications. The new polymer biocomposites (WPCs) were evaluated for their mechanical and structural properties regarding their susceptibility to multiple processing. As thermo-mechanical degradation processes are associated with the repeated processing of plastics, which causes changes in the properties and structure of these materials. Therefore, to determine the extent to which the composites can be used under operating conditions, the composites were examined by DMA. As a result of the study observed some effects caused by the repeated effects of shear stress and temperature on the rheological and mechanical properties of polymer composites. The first of these is related to a decrease in viscosity of WPC composites subjected to the six times processing and changes in flow conditions during extrusion and injection moulding due to the degradation of the polypropylene matrix. As the viscosity of the composites decreased, a reduction in tensile strength and other mechanical properties of the polypropylene matrix was noted. On the other hand, the second effect observed leads to the conclusion that, as the composites' processing cycles increase, the WPC composite's mechanical properties increase due to an increase in the degree of homogenization of the individual components of the WPC composition. This study aims to describe the relationship between these two primary processes and to determine the relationship between the properties and the structure of the new WPCs.</p

The use of atomic force microscopy for structural and surface morphological analysis of Fanconi anemia patient fibroblasts before and after exposure to γ-radiation

The surface morphological changes of Fanconi anemia patient fibroblasts after exposure to γ–radiation were investigated by AFM and foci immunofluorescence staining. The reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton was found, having resulted in reduction of the membrane stiffness and increase of adhesion in nuclear and lamellipodial regions of the cell

Leisure, Popular Culture and Memory: The Invention of Dark Age Britain, Wales, England, and Middle-earth in the songs of Led Zeppelin

In the period of high modernity, and in the process of establishing the imperial nation-state of Great Britain, historians, archaeologists and enthusiastic amateurs searched high and low for material evidence and primary sources from what was called the Dark Ages. There is a gap in knowledge about this past, and all discussion rests on finding meaning in fading inscriptions, or dark earth, or trusting completely the writings of Bede and Gildas. The search for an identity and history for the nation for Great Britain was based on nationalist beliefs about Englishness, Britishness or Welshness. In the twentieth-century, the problem of Englishness, place and myth led Tolkien to write his Middle-earth stories in his leisure time. At the same time, the problem of Welshness or Britishness saw a growth in interest – in film and books - in Arthurian traditions, and a tourist interest in the Celtic fringe of Britain. In this paper, I show how the songs and album covers of Led Zeppelin, and their film The Song Remains the Same, draw upon both the work of Tolkien and the Arthurian traditions to construct ideas of masculine belonging in some mythological medieval time and place. While this constriction is idiosyncratic to the artists, they are drawing on and justifying the wider problem of England, Wales and Britain in leisure and culture

Ocena stanu degradacji belek strunobetonowych za pomocą analizy rozkładu mocy

This paper presents spatial, energetic characteristics of vibration loads, describing diagnostic conditions of specific mechanical object. The method is applied in structural changes in mechanical objects. The beam has been subjected to a cyclic one-sided bending. In particular stages of the structure's cyclic loading the transverse dynamic power has been increased to 2 kN, from 4 to 24 kN. The frequency of cyclic overloading and transverse unloading of the beam oscillated between 0.1 - 0.3 Hz. A dynamic effect of the beam's loads was a gradual degradation of its structure. The beam's degradation state, caused by the increase of load, showed the changes of characteristics' maxima frequencies. The decrease of the frequency of the beam's natural vibrations was a result of the decrease of its dynamic rigidity and the changes of the internally dissipated energy. Maxima for high loads characterised the process of cracking and breaking of the beam.W artykule przedstawiono zastosowanie metody analizy rozkładu mocy obciążeń dynamicznych do opisu stanu technicznego obiektu i procesu degradacji obiektu mechanicznego. Obniżenie częstości drgań własnych belki nastąpił w wyniku obniżenia jej sztywności dynamicznej i w wyniku zmian energii dyssypowanej wewnętrznie. Maksima dla wysokich obciążeń charakteryzowały proces pękania i łamania belki
