"Doença de Índio": o princípio patogênico da alteridade e os modos de transformação em uma cosmologia amazônica

During my fieldwork among the Wauja Indians of the Upper Xingu river I collected several narratives of local people who had suffered animal transformations when severely ill. Most of them returned to their human condition after the interventions of highly specialized shamans and ritual singers and dancers. This article describes the series of transformations between humans and non-humans in the Wauja cosmology and discusses how the attributes of humanity, animality and monstruosity are distributed and set in relation.Durante meus trabalhos de campo entre os índios Wauja do Alto Xingu, recolhi várias narrativas sobre pessoas da aldeia que tinham virado bicho quando estiveram gravemente doentes. A maioria retornou à sua condição humana graças às intervenções de xamãs visionário-divinatórios e de altos especialistas rituais. Este artigo descreve as séries de transformações entre humanos e não-humanos na cosmologia wauja e discute como são distribuídos e colocados em relação os atributos da humanidade, animalidade e da monstruosidade

Processo criativo e apreciação estética no grafismo Wauja

The idea that artistic creationcomes from non-human worlds is a verypresent theme in the lowland SouthAmerica ethnology (Taylor, 2003; Viveirosde Castro, 1986). This article offers avision about this subject expanding itsdescription to an analysis of the socialplace of beauty and ugliness in the graphicart of the Wauja Indians of the UpperXingu river. A cerâmica wauja: etnoclassificação, matérias-primas e processos técnicos

A cerâmica wauja é a mais elaborada classe de artefatos do sistema de objetos do Alto Xingu. Seus tipos variam desde minúsculas panelinhas até enormes panelas com 115 cm de diâmetro. Este artigo descreve o sistema nativo de classificação da cerâmica e seu padrão geral de fabricação, atentando para os detalhes que distinguem as qualidades técnica e estética das panelas conforme as percepções wauja.The Wauja ceramics is the most elaborate class of artifacts in the Upper Xingu system of objects. Their types varies from very little recipients to 115 cm diameter bowls. This article describes the native classificatory system of the ceramics and its general pattern of fabrication focusing on Wauja perceptions of the technical and aesthetic qualities of the bowls

Choses (in)visibles et (im)périssables

Les spécialistes des Andes et de l’Amazonie s’intéressent vivement, depuis peu, au renouvellement des études comparatives entre ces deux régions. Construites à partir de traditions intellectuelles distinctes, il manque encore à l’anthropologie des Andes et de l’Amazonie un langage commun permettant de poser un ensemble de questions transversales plus vaste. De plus, il est important de réfléchir à des perspectives analytiques et thématiques alternatives qui échappent au fort antagonisme, légué par les études antérieures, entre les hautes et les basses terres. À travers une approche ethnographique des mondes visuel et matériel andins et amazoniens, cet article propose une incursion sur un terrain de recherche encore peu exploré du point de vue de la comparaison entre ces deux régions. Ce texte aborde la double question de la longévité/temporalité et celle de la rétention du statut de personne par les objets rituels.Specialists in the Andes and Amazonia have recently developed a lively interest in the renewal of comparative studies between these two regions. Because they grew in different intellectual traditions, the anthropology of the Andes and of Amazonia still lack a common language allowing the consideration of a series of broader transversal questions. Moreover, it is important to reflect on alternative analytical and thematic perspectives which escape the deep antagonism, inherited from previous studies, between the highlands and the lowlands. Through an ethnographic approach to Andean and Amazonian visual and material worlds, this article offers an incursion into a field of research as yet little explored from the point of view of a comparison between these two regions. L’univers visuel des chamanes wauja (Haut-Xingu). Cet article aborde la question des expériences visuelles des rêves et des transes des chamanes considérées comme éléments de conceptualisation des quatre principales altérités extra-humaines (« homme-animal », « vêtement », « monstre » et « animal ») et de leurs rapports avec les Wauja. Les images insérées dans le texte résultent de la réflexion ontologique et artistique d’un groupe privilégié d’individus auxquels sont attribués des pouvoirs concernant l’interprétation des faits et l’expression visuelle et verbale des idées cosmologiques wauja.The visual universe of Wauja shamans (Upper Xingu). This paper analyses the shaman’s visual experiences in dreams and trances as elements in the conceptualisation of the four main types of non-human beings (« animal-people », « clothing », « monster », and « animal ») and of their relationships to the Wauja. The pictures included in the article derive from the ontological and esthetic reflexions of a privileged group of individuals.
