Function Design of Mechatronic Systems for Human-Robot Collaboration
Traditionally, robots have been caged off from human activity but, recently, improvements in advance robotic technology as well as the introduction of new safety standards, have allowed the possibility of collaboration between human workers and robotic systems. The introduction of Human-Robot Collaboration has the potential to increase the quality and the flexibility of the production process while improving the working condition of the operators. However, traditional industrial robots are typically characterized by small payload and small reachable workspace that reduce the range of possible applications. These drawbacks can overcome the advantages related to
a collaborative task and make the collaboration not effective.
This work aims at analyzing innovative mechatronic solutions capable of increasing the workspace and the versatility of the system with the final goal of creating effective collaborations with humans. Cable driven Parallel Robots (CDPRs) are considered a promising technology able to satisfy these requirements. In fact, compared to rigid serial and parallel robots, they have several advantages such as large workspaces, high payloads per unit of weight, ease of construction, versatility and affordable costs.
This work presents two innovative solutions of CDPR able to enlarge the workspace, improve the versatility and reduce the collisions risk. The first solution consists of a cable-suspended parallel robot with a reconfigurable end-effector whereas the second solution is an innovative model of cable-driven micro-macro robot.
In the first part of the thesis, the kinematic and dynamic models of these innovative systems are presented and analyzed in order to characterize their capability. Trajectory planning and optimal design are addressed with the purpose of maximizing the performance of the systems.
The last part of the thesis deals with the design of a novel family of Intelligent CAble-driven parallel roBOTs whose architecture and control are conceived to maximize the robot versatility to the task to be performed and the environment in which the robot is intended to operate
In stage II/III lymph node positive breast cancer patients less than 55 years of age, keratin 8 expression in lymph node metastases but not in the primary tumor is an indicator of better survival
Axillary lymph node status is one of the most important prognostic variables for breast cancer (BC). To investigate and understand the clinical, histopathological and biological factors that affect prognosis in node positive young breast cancer patients, we compared the phenotype of 100 primary tumours with their corresponding loco- regional lymph node (LN) metastases using conventional immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers currently in use for molecular classification of breast cancer. By comparing the expression of ER, PR, HER-2, Ki67, K8, K5/6 and vimentin, we found that expression of HER-2, Ki67, K8 and vimentin is frequently lost in lymph node metastases. Between the primary tumour and corresponding lymph node metastases expression of keratins K8 and K5/6 significantly changed. Expression of K8 in lymph node metastases, but not in primary tumours, segregates patients in two sub-groups with different outcome. Survival of patients with K8 positive LN metastases at 5 years in comparison with patients with K8 negative LN metastases was 75% vs 48%, at 10 years 62% vs 22% and at 20 years 53% vs 14%(p<0.001). K8 immunostaining of tissue from the lymph node metastasis allows defining a sub-group of lymph node positive BC patients with a highly unfavourable outcome, for whom therapeutic options might have to be reconsidered
Predicción del perfil lipoproteico en modelos animales
Nowadays cardiovascular diseases have a high influence on the world's population and this trend is expected to increase over the years to come. Therefore, there is a general interest to develop new methods that enable professionals to advise reliably depending on the patient's cardiovascular profile. Thanks to metabolomics, new techniques have been achieved such as the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) which has been applied to predict standar lipids highly related with cardiovascular diseases. The present project evaluates and develops PLS (Partial Least Square) prediction models based on nuclear magnetic resonance of protons with the aim to achieve a quantification of the total cholesterol and triglycerides of three sets of animal plasma samples (pigs, N = 230 where N is the number of samples). First basic descriptive statistics were performed in order to better understand the behavior of the samples. Afterwards, a PCA (Principal Components Analysis) was performed showing how the samples spread according to different variables. Then, it was decided to exclude the samples belonging to the set number 3 since they were not comparable to the samples of the other two sets. Next STOCSY (Statistical TOtal Correlation SpectroscopY) plots were created to observe the correlation between the NMR spectra and the studied prediction variable, lastly, from all the obtained data, the PLS predictions models were created. For this purpose, two methods were used, the first one used 70% of the values as a training set and the remaining 30% as a testing set, the second one consisted on selecting the 10% of the highest values, the 10% of the lowest values, 50% of the values which were randomly selected as a training set and the remaining 30% were used as a testing set. Two types of preprocessing were applied to the data in order to identify which was the one returning the best results, when applied, the Autoscale preprocessing got promising results achieving models with a 0.97 (R=0,97) of goodness of fit to cholesterol. Regarding triglycerides, better results were given when the Mean centering preprocessing was applied giving a maximum fitness of 0.86 (R=0.86). After the completion of this project, the creation of PLS prediction models to quantify lipoproteins in pig plasma samples reliably is clearly possible. Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::3 - Salut i Benesta
Assessment of aquifer contamination from on-site sanitation systems and effluent reuse in the North of Mendoza province
alcantarillado y obras de saneamiento in situ. Some activities carried out in the Northern
part of the province of Mendoza may affect
groundwater quality: industrial effluent disposal
and reuse for irrigation, fertilizer application,
on-site sanitation systems, sewer leaks, etc.
In this area, cut across by the Mendoza and
Tunuyán rivers, two large hydro-geological units
developed from Quaternary sedimentation:
unconfined aquifers (area of alluvial cones)
and upper water-table and underlying semiconfined
and confined aquifers (where the study
area is located). The objective of this paper is
to identify the source of nitrate contamination
in aquifers. Several physical-chemical and
biological parameters were analyzed to assess
groundwater quality, and isotope techniques
were used to trace the origin of groundwater
and the source of nitrates. Results show that
nitrate contamination in semi-confined and
confined aquifers does not originate in the
overlying unconfined aquifer, which is affected
by reuse of industrial effluents, but is caused
by the horizontal groundwater flow from
the greater Mendoza area contaminated by
sewer leakage and on-site sanitation systems.Fil: Álvarez, Amílcar.

The impact of wastewater irrigation on groundwater : the Paramillos System (Lavalle, Mendoza, Argentina)
This paper analyzes the impact of domestic
wastewater reuse for irrigation purposes
on groundwater quality. The sampling points
selected –part of a larger-scale monitoring
effort– correspond to the system of the Paramillos
wastewater treatment plant (a facultative
stabilization pond), located North of Greater
Mendoza. The results, presented in graphs,
maps and tables, are discussed on the basis
of the performance and interaction with the
soil profile of three water system components:
surface water (wastewater), groundwater from
the aquifer’s upper level (water table), and
groundwater from the deep aquifer (confined/
semi-confined). It is concluded that the underlying
impermeable layer prevents nitrates
and nitrites from the biological degradation
of wastewater organic matter from reaching
the deep aquifer. In the upper level or water
table, the soil profile removes 39 to 90% of
the total incoming N and P, 30 to 90% of the
BOD, and 100% of the E. coli remaining in the
plant’s effluent.Fil: Álvarez, Amílcar.Fil: Fasciolo, Graciela.

PI3K/AKT Signaling in Breast Cancer Molecular Subtyping and Lymph Node Involvement
Lymph node metastatic involvement persists to be among the most important predictors of recurrence and survival in breast carcinoma (BC). This study aimed at investigating possible gene expression differences in primary BC between patients with or without lymph node involvement at the time of diagnosis. In a retrospective study, we investigated the potential prognostic role of 9 candidate biomarkers at mRNA level in a cohort of 305 breast cancer patients, 151 lymph node-negative (LN-) and 154 lymph node-positive (LN+). The analyzed genes belonged to the RAS pathway (RAF1, ERBB2, PIK3CB, AKT1, AKT2, AKT3), RB pathway (RB1 and CDK2) and cellular differentiation (KTR8). Their expression profiles were investigated by RT-qPCR and were correlated to immunohistochemically-based molecular subtypes and BC clinical and pathological features. The differential expression of several genes in the primary tumor tissue was related to the LN involvement. Some of those genes, including PIK3CB, RB1, and AKT3, were more expressed in LN- BC patients, while some others, notably ERBB2 and AKT1, in LN+ ones. Among the candidate biomarkers, the expression levels of AKTs isoforms influenced also patients\u2019 survival rates. In detail, higher expression levels of AKT1 and AKT2 negatively influenced overall patients\u2019 survival and in particular AKT2 expression levels defined a group of luminal B BC patients with shorter cancer-specific survival. On the contrary, longer cancer-specific survival was recorded in luminal A BC patients with higher expression levels of AKT3. That finding was also confirmed by Cox multivariate analysis. The same AKT3 resulted to be a possible candidate predictive biomarker for Tamoxifen response. In conclusion, our study highlighted the complex regulation of the PI3K/AKT pathway in BC and its differences in BC patients with and without lymph node involvement
