    Substituent Effect on the Association Equilibria of Free Radical Anions. Electrochemical Reduction of p-Substituted Nitrobenzenes in N,N-Dimethylformamide

    Association constants between p-substituted nitrobenzene anion radicals, formed by reduction of the parent molecules at a dropping mercuryelectrode, and tetraethylammonium cation in N,N-dimethylformamide have been determined by studying the variation in the half-wave potential with solution composition. The association constant was observed to depend on the substituent effect; it was shown that the Hammett equation in the form log K" = - 1.550 + 2.77 is fulfilled.The dependence of logK" vs. the hyperfine splitting constant (from ESR spectra) proper for N-nuclei in nitro-group of radical anions is also discussed

    Molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis of Peste des petits ruminants virus circulating in small ruminants in eastern Amhara region, Ethiopia

    Background: Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a severe, highly infectious and fatal viral disease of small ruminants. Four lineages of PPR virus have been identified globally based on sequence analysis of the nucleoprotein (N) and fusion (F) gene. The aim of this study was to isolate and genetically characterize recently circulating PPR virus in small ruminants in the eastern Amhara region in Ethiopia. A total of 28 anti-mortem samples (gum debris, nasal and ocular swab) were collected from clinically suspicious animals and examined for the presence of PPRV by a one-step RT-PCR assay. Samples positive with RT-PCR were subjected to isolation of the virus which were subsequently genetically characterized by sequencing of the nucleoprotein (N) gene and phylogenetic analysis of PPR virus (PPRV) strains. Results: Of the 28 clinical samples examined, 46.4% were positive with RT-PCR for viral nucleic acid. The PPRV was successfully isolated on CHS-20 cell line with the ovine signaling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM) receptor expressed on the cell surface and confirmed with RT-PCR and IFAT assay. The nucleotide sequence and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the PPRV obtained were clustered genetically with Lineage IV isolates of the virus. Conclusion: The successful isolation of the virus and molecular findings of this study confirmed active lineage IV PPRV infections among populations of sheep and goats in eastern Amhara, suggesting risks for potential spread of the disease to currently free areas. Thus, we recommend systematic vaccination to contain outbreaks in affected districts and geographically linked surrounding districts to which the disease could potentially spread due to different epidemiological linkages

    The SOLARIS synchrotron located in Krakow, Poland, is a third-generation light source operating at medium electron energy. The first synchrotron light was observed in 2015, and the consequent development of infrastructure lead to the first users’ experiments at soft X-ray energies in 2018. Presently, SOLARIS expands its operation towards hard X-rays with continuous developments of the beamlines and concurrent infrastructure. In the following, we will summarize the SOLARIS synchrotron design, and describe the beamlines and research infrastructure together with the main performance parameters, upgrade, and development plans

    Antibacterial Activity of Commercial Phytochemicals against Aeromonas Species Isolated from Fish

    Antimicrobial activities of phytochemicals—trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), ferulic acid (FA), p-coumaric acid (p-CA), caffeic acid (CA), chlorogenic acid (CHA), Thymus vulgaris essential oil (TO), Eugenia caryophyllus essential oil (ECO), and Melaleuca alternifolia oil (TTO) against Aeromonas species—were assessed. Growth of all Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and almost all Aeromonas sobria strains was inhibited by TC at concentration 0.01 mg/mL, and for most Aeromonas hydrophila strains minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranged from 0.01 to 0.19 mg/mL. The inhibitory effect of TC against A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida was comparable to the effect of oxytetracycline, and in the case of A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and A. sobria was higher compared to gentamicin. MIC of FA, p-CA, and CA for most strains ranged from 1.56 to 3.12 mg/mL, and MIC values of TO for most strains ranged from 0.39 to 0.78 mg/mL. TO and TC at the concentrations below ½ MIC values used in mixtures exhibited strong synergism. ECO and TC showed synergy in mixture of ⅛ MIC of ECO and ¼ MIC of TC. TC and TO exhibited the strongest inhibitory and bactericidal effect against investigated Aeromonas species, and they are a promising alternative to the use of antibiotics in controlling the growth of these fish pathogens
