This article aims to show elements of fear and anxiety in children’s books written about children living in the Gaza Strip region of Israel. Since the 1950s, this area has been a source of active terrorism against Israel, although it should be noted that there have also been periods of relative calm alongside the waves of terrorism. The research methodology is based on a text analysis of 20 children’s books on this subject that reflect social processes during wartime and their effects on residents, who are mostly children. The vocabulary related to fear and anxiety highlights certain sociocultural contexts—in this case, a period of war—and the lexicon use expresses the unique atmosphere that was created in the Gaza Stri

Feminism and Multiculturalism: Two Common Foundations for a Vision and a Practice of Transformative Social Activities and Education in Israel

    Get PDF
The last few years have witnessed the development of a new direction in theoretical feminist thinking which focuses on the quality of the link between feminism and multiculturalism. The discussion of the subject includes several main approaches. The premise of one of these approaches is that the two ideologies share many aspects, especially in their analysis of both social oppression in our world and the transformational goals motivating the two ideologies. In the current paper we follow a radical-socialist definition of multiculturalism which the main aim of that ideology is endeavoring to empower discriminated minorities (whether ethnic, cultural, and racial minorities) and to eliminate gender discrimination. In addition we follow the radical and cultural definitions of feminism. In the base of those definitions we claim that there is a very strong bond between feminism and multiculturalism. This conclusion is very significant when discussing transformative education designed to advance weakened populations. The current paper focuses on a demonstration of several cases of feminist and multicultural practices in the Israeli fields of social activities and education

Morphological Changes on the Axillary Border of the Scapula with Special Reference to the Neandertal Problem

This study is an effort to determine the causes of the various morphologies of the axillary border of the modern human scapula and to relate the results to the unusual morphology of Neandertal scapulae. Two-thirds of known Neandertal scapulae exhibit a dorsal sulcus on the axillary border: the remainder have a double sulcus (Chancelade pattern) and only one exhibits a ventral sulcus. The ventral sulcus is predominant on the scapulae of anatomically modern hominids where the Chancelade pattern is also present in varying frequencies. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on data derived from skeletal material of five modern human groups in order to determine the causes of morphological changes on the axillary border of the scapula. The groups are: blacks and whites from a documented hospital collection (Terry Collection); Alaskan Eskimos; Southeastern American Indians of the Mississippian period, and of the Archaic period. The groups varied with respect to race, time and technological level. Greater frequencies of the Chancelade pattern were found with advancing age and on the right side in these groups. It is suggested that, in modern humans, increased muscular stress, resulting from increased use of the upper limb, promotes greater development of the teres minor muscle as seen in the Chancelade morphology. Additionally, in modern hominids, the Chancelade pattern is positively associated with more curved clavicles (indicating a slightly rounder thorax) and with more cranially deviated humeral heads. Thus, it is further suggested that the rounder thorax of Neandertals may have caused their scapulohumeral-musculoskeletal relationships to be different from those of modern hominids. This effect together with the more strenuous use of the upper limbs (due to greater demands of the cultural level) may have caused enlargement of the teres minor muscle, thus creating a dorsal sulcus on most Neandertal scapulae. Other factors contributing to the morphological changes from Neandertals to modern hominids may have been cultural changes which produced differences in tool and weapon handling, and/or genetic selection

Moral Courage of Students Qualifying to Teach in Special Education

A large body of research has discussed the issue of moral courage, but there is a lack of research on students who are qualifying to teach in special education. Moral courage is considered as the bridge between talking about values and actually implementing them. Ten special education students in their last year of studies in a large college in Israel participated in the research. Most of the student teachers chose special education for personal or family-related reasons. Data were collected with qualitative research tools: portfolios, field diaries, and partially-structured interviews and analyzed by qualitative research methods, identifying in the students’ stories themes, which were divided into categories. Two kinds of courage were described; courage as a part of the teaching process, when the students independently decided to teach differently from how they were expected to teach, and courage in an exceptional act in which they intervened for the sake of one single child. In every case the students were aware of the fact that they risked their professional future, their “good name” and their studies in the college. Several motives were identified for their behavior: ideological motives, altruism and caring, moral inner motive and responsibility for others, personal reasons that were connected to their own past history, and the existence of support from college instructors

This is an integrative literature review, which sought to highlight and discuss the possibilities of pressure injury treatment in people diagnosed with COVID-19 in hospital, based on scientific publications indexed in the Medical Literature and Retrieval System Online database. , between 2020 and 2021. 24 articles were obtained. Following the inclusion criteria, 09 studies were selected for analysis. Some evidence in the literature that suggests a significant increase in pressure injuries in patients who develop severe acute respiratory syndrome associated with COVID-19, which requires prolonged intubation, tracheostomies and prone position. Pressure injuries were pointed out in many cases as unavoidable. Treatment is essential for existing injuries, but preventive measures to combat the main extrinsic risk factors are fundamental and have always been available to everyone in the health team. Therefore, prevention is the culture of risk factor control and, regardless of the patient's condition, we must prevent pressure injuries.

Aim: To identify factors related to adhesion in a group of patients who received analgesic prescription on demand for pain management after periodontal surgery. Materials and methods: A total of 68 patients with an indication of clinical crown increase or open flap root scaling and planning were recruited. Thirty four patients from the “on demand” arm of the study comprised this study. Prior to the initiation of the procedure the patients answered to the Corah Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS) and the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory (IDATE). After the procedure, the patient fullfilled the Visual Analogue Scale (EAV), the Numerical Scale and the Verbal Pain Scale for pain measurement along with a document to record the use of the prescribed medication. Patients received paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets with postoperative demand schedule and were instructed to complete the scales on the 2nd, 6th, 12th, 24th and 48th hours after surgery. Results: Almost 70% of the patients were female and seventy percent were non-smokers; the most accomplished procedure was the increase of clinical crown with more than ninety percent of the cases. Patients classified with low anxiety CDAS presented greater adherence to the treatment (P=0.007), in the same way as patients with low VAS 6h (P=0,05). Conslusions: High levels of postoperative pain and dental anxiety may interfere negatively in the adhesion of a postoperative analgesia scheme with drug use in a “on demand scheme” and rescue medication
