Secret-Sharing for NP
A computational secret-sharing scheme is a method that enables a dealer, that
has a secret, to distribute this secret among a set of parties such that a
"qualified" subset of parties can efficiently reconstruct the secret while any
"unqualified" subset of parties cannot efficiently learn anything about the
secret. The collection of "qualified" subsets is defined by a Boolean function.
It has been a major open problem to understand which (monotone) functions can
be realized by a computational secret-sharing schemes. Yao suggested a method
for secret-sharing for any function that has a polynomial-size monotone circuit
(a class which is strictly smaller than the class of monotone functions in P).
Around 1990 Rudich raised the possibility of obtaining secret-sharing for all
monotone functions in NP: In order to reconstruct the secret a set of parties
must be "qualified" and provide a witness attesting to this fact.
Recently, Garg et al. (STOC 2013) put forward the concept of witness
encryption, where the goal is to encrypt a message relative to a statement "x
in L" for a language L in NP such that anyone holding a witness to the
statement can decrypt the message, however, if x is not in L, then it is
computationally hard to decrypt. Garg et al. showed how to construct several
cryptographic primitives from witness encryption and gave a candidate
construction.
One can show that computational secret-sharing implies witness encryption for
the same language. Our main result is the converse: we give a construction of a
computational secret-sharing scheme for any monotone function in NP assuming
witness encryption for NP and one-way functions. As a consequence we get a
completeness theorem for secret-sharing: computational secret-sharing scheme
for any single monotone NP-complete function implies a computational
secret-sharing scheme for every monotone function in NP
Breakdown of large-N quenched reduction in SU(N) lattice gauge theories
We study the validity of the large-N equivalence between four-dimensional
SU(N) lattice gauge theory and its momentum quenched version--the Quenched
Eguchi-Kawai (QEK) model. We find that the assumptions needed for the proofs of
equivalence do not automatically follow from the quenching prescription. We use
weak-coupling arguments to show that large-N equivalence is in fact likely to
break down in the QEK model, and that this is due to dynamically generated
correlations between different Euclidean components of the gauge fields. We
then use Monte-Carlo simulations at intermediate couplings with 20 <= N <= 200
to provide strong evidence for the presence of these correlations and for the
consequent breakdown of reduction. This evidence includes a large discrepancy
between the transition coupling of the "bulk" transition in lattice gauge
theories and the coupling at which the QEK model goes through a strongly
first-order transition. To accurately measure this discrepancy we adapt the

Chiral crystals in strong-coupling lattice QCD at nonzero chemical potential
We study the effective action for strong-coupling lattice QCD with
one-component staggered fermions in the case of nonzero chemical potential and
zero temperature. The structure of this action suggests that at large chemical
potentials its ground state is a crystalline `chiral density wave' that
spontaneously breaks chiral symmetry and translation invariance. In mean-field
theory, on the other hand, we find that this state is unstable. We show that
lattice artifacts are partly responsible for this, and suggest that if this
phase exists in QCD, then finding it in Monte-Carlo simulations would require
simulating on relatively fine lattices. In particular, the baryon mass in
lattice units, m_B, should be considerably smaller than its strong-coupling

Crystallization of the regulatory and effector domains of the key sporulation response regulator Spo0A
The key response-regulator gene of sporulation, spo0A, has been cloned from Bacillus stearothermophilus and the encoded protein purified. The DNA-binding and phospho-acceptor domains of Spo0A have been prepared by tryptic digestion of the intact protein and subsequently crystallized in forms suitable for X-ray crystallographic studies. The DNA-binding domain has been crystallized in two forms, one of which diffracts X-rays to beyond 2.5 Angstrom spacing. The crystals of the phospho-acceptor domain diffract X-rays beyond 2.0 Angstrom spacing using synchrotron radiation
The prognostic value of the tumour marker Cyfra 21-1 in carcinoma of head and neck and its role in early detection of recurrent disease
This study examines a new tumour marker, Cyfra 21-1, as a prognostic marker in predicting the survival of H&N cancer patients, and its correlation with clinical outcome during prolonged follow up of these patients. The study included 67 patients with primary detection of carcinoma of H&N. The survival of these patients was evaluated in correlation with the disease stage and Cyfra 21-1 levels at initial diagnosis. 38 patients were followed clinically and with serial assays for at least 12 months, or until recurrence was diagnosed. Cyfra 21-1 levels were determined periodically, using an Elisa kit. Patients with Cyfra 21-1 < 1.5 ng ml–1had a higher survival rate compared to patients with Cyfra 21-1 ≥ 1.5 ng ml–1(63% vs. 20%, respectively). The risk ratio of Ln(Cyfra 21-1) is 1.62 (P = 0.028). In a Cox regression model that included the disease stage and Ln(Cyfra 21-1), Ln(Cyfra 21-1) was preferred as the main parameter for predicting patients survival. In 83% of the 12 patients with recurrent or residual disease, Cyfra 21-1 was elevated before or during clinical detection of the recurrence. Cyfra 21-1 was found to be a prognostic marker for carcinoma of H&N, unrelated to the stage of the disease. Elevated levels of Cyfra 21-1 without clinical evidence of disease can be attributed to the marker's mean lead-time as compared to the clinical appearance of the disease. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Relaxation and edge reconstruction in integer quantum Hall systems
The interplay between the confinement potential and electron-electron
interactions causes reconstructions of Quantum Hall edges. We study the
consequences of this edge reconstruction for the relaxation of hot electrons
injected into integer quantum Hall edge states. In translationally invariant
edges, the relaxation of hot electrons is governed by three-body collisions
which are sensitive to the electron dispersion and thus to reconstruction
effects. We show that the relaxation rates are significantly altered in
different reconstruction scenarios.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Non-Relativistic Gravitation: From Newton to Einstein and Back
We present an improvement to the Classical Effective Theory approach to the
non-relativistic or Post-Newtonian approximation of General Relativity. The
"potential metric field" is decomposed through a temporal Kaluza-Klein ansatz
into three NRG-fields: a scalar identified with the Newtonian potential, a
3-vector corresponding to the gravito-magnetic vector potential and a 3-tensor.
The derivation of the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian simplifies such that
each term corresponds to a single Feynman diagram providing a clear physical
interpretation. Spin interactions are dominated by the exchange of the
gravito-magnetic field. Leading correction diagrams corresponding to the 3PN
correction to the spin-spin interaction and the 2.5PN correction to the

A Uniform Min-Max Theorem with Applications in Cryptography
We present a new, more constructive proof of von Neumann’s Min-Max Theorem for two-player zero-sum game — specifically, an algorithm that builds a near-optimal mixed strategy for the second player from several best-responses of the second player to mixed strategies of the first player. The algorithm extends previous work of Freund and Schapire (Games and Economic Behavior ’99) with the advantage that the algorithm runs in poly(n) time even when a pure strategy for the first player is a distribution chosen from a set of distributions over {0, 1} . This extension enables a number of additional applications in cryptography and complexity theory, often yielding uniform security versions of results that were previously only proved for nonuniform security (due to use of the non-constructive Min-Max Theorem).
We describe several applications, including a more modular and improved uniform version of Impagliazzo’s Hardcore Theorem (FOCS ’95), showing impossibility of constructing succinct non-interactive arguments (SNARGs) via black-box reductions under uniform hardness assumptions (using techniques from Gentry and Wichs (STOC ’11) for the nonuniform setting), and efficiently simulating high entropy distributions within any sufficiently nice convex set (extending a result of Trevisan, Tulsiani and Vadhan (CCC ’09)).Engineering and Applied Science
Media representation of regulated incivilities: Relevant actors, problems, solutions and the role played by experts in the Flemish press
This article analyses the representations of regulated nuisance in a section of Flemish newspapers over time. It identifies the groups of people who have been successful in conveying messages in and through Flemish press news, and explores the way they have represented problems of, and suggested solutions to, regulated incivilities over the years. Furthermore, against the backdrop of newsmaking criminology, it considers whether and how crime and justice experts have contributed to shaping the Flemish media discourse on regulated incivilities over time. Overall the analysis of press news has found that the press, by giving coverage to the voices of local institutional actors, has promoted the criminalization of nuisance and, especially, of physical incivilities. The views of criminological experts, by contrast, have remained marginal. The article concludes by suggesting how such findings present a new set of empirical and conceptual challenges for newsmaking criminology, and more generally, for public criminology
