Hole motion in the Ising antiferromagnet: an application of the recursion method

We study hole motion in the Ising antiferromagnet using the recursion method. Using the retraceable path approximation we find the hole's Green's function as well as its wavefunction for arbitrary values of t/Jzt/J_z. The effect of small transverse interaction also is taken into account. Our results provide some additional insight into the self-consistent Born approximation.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, no figures. Strain-induced phase transformations under compression, unloading, and reloading in a diamond anvil cell

Strain-induced phase transformations (PTs) in a sample under compression, unloading, and reloading in a diamond anvil cell are investigated in detail, by applying finite element method. In contrast to previous studies, the kinetic equation includes the pressure range in which both direct and reverse PTs occur simultaneously. Results are compared to the case when “no transformation” region in the pressure range exists instead, for various values of the kinetic parameters and ratios of the yield strengths of low and high pressure phases. Under unloading (which has never been studied before), surprising plastic flow and reverse PT are found, which were neglected in experiments and change interpretation of experimental results. They are caused both by heterogeneous stress redistribution and transformation-induced plasticity. After reloading, the reverse PT continues followed by intense direct PT. However, PT is less pronounced than after initial compression and geometry of transformed zone changes. In particular, a localized transformed band of a weaker high pressure phase does not reappear in comparison with the initial compression. A number of experimental phenomena are reproduced and interpreted

    Analyzing European Union Politics

The speed and depth with which the European Communities/ European Union has evolved is breathtaking and has radically shaped the life of the continent. Ever since the beginning of this ambitious economic and political project, scholars around the world have tried to explain the underlying logic behind it and the mechanisms of its functioning. Thus, a plethora of studies developed alongside the evolution of the EU. SENT (Network of European Studies) is an innovative and ambitious project which brought together about 100 partners from the EU member states, candidate and associated countries, and other parts of the world. It was a far reaching project aimed to overcome disciplinary and geographical- linguistic boundaries in order to assess the state of EU studies today, as well as the idea of Europe as transmitted by schools, national politicians, the media, etc. SENT’s main goal was to map European studies, in order to get a comprehensive picture of the evolution of European studies over the last decades in different disciplines and countries. This approach permitted to achieve a better understanding of the direction these studies are now taking. Five disciplines were identified where EU studies have particularly evolved: law, politics, economics, history, and social and cultural studies. The mapping of EU studies thus includes a review of the most studied issues in EU studies today, the main academic schools, the most influential journals and books published, but it also shows how local realities and national identities affect the study and teaching of Europe around the world. In addition, an important work was done in mapping and discussing teaching methodologies in relation to European studies with the aim of introducing and diffusing the most up-to-date techniques

Modeling of GERDA Phase II data

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) of INFN is searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ0\nu\beta\beta) decay of 76^{76}Ge. The technological challenge of GERDA is to operate in a "background-free" regime in the region of interest (ROI) after analysis cuts for the full 100\,kg\cdotyr target exposure of the experiment. A careful modeling and decomposition of the full-range energy spectrum is essential to predict the shape and composition of events in the ROI around QββQ_{\beta\beta} for the 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta search, to extract a precise measurement of the half-life of the double-beta decay mode with neutrinos (2νββ2\nu\beta\beta) and in order to identify the location of residual impurities. The latter will permit future experiments to build strategies in order to further lower the background and achieve even better sensitivities. In this article the background decomposition prior to analysis cuts is presented for GERDA Phase II. The background model fit yields a flat spectrum in the ROI with a background index (BI) of 16.040.85+0.7810316.04^{+0.78}_{-0.85} \cdot 10^{-3}\,cts/(kg\cdotkeV\cdotyr) for the enriched BEGe data set and 14.680.52+0.4710314.68^{+0.47}_{-0.52} \cdot 10^{-3}\,cts/(kg\cdotkeV\cdotyr) for the enriched coaxial data set. These values are similar to the one of Gerda Phase I despite a much larger number of detectors and hence radioactive hardware components

Ideologiczna debata pomiędzy Rosją i UE to problem wartości politycznych. The ideological debate between Russia and the European Union is a problem of political values. Various approaches to such values as democracy, human rights and the market economy were analysed in the present study. A chronological analysis of the particular stages of this debate regarding values during the terms of offi ce of Presidents - Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev is also presented. The impact of legal obligations on the external policy of the European Union, which is neutral but based on certain values, in the light of the Treaty of Lisbon, is also a subject of the present study.Московский государственный институт международных отношений (Университет) МИД России (Moskiewski Państwowy Instytut Stosunków Międzynarodowych - MGIMO

Problem of asymptotic analysis and averaging of functionals of elasticity/plasticity theory

Investigated have been variation problems with linear growth integrals, limit load, averaging. The work has been aimed at obtaining conditions for the coincidence of limit loads in elastic-plastic and rigidly plastic cases, at solving the problem of averaging in the elasticity/plasticity theory. Proved has been the coincidence of limit loads for elastic/plastic and rigidly plastic environment. Shown has been substantiality of the non-defectiveness condition. Presence and absence of averaging have been found for the Dirichlet and Neumann problems. The results can be used in various universities and institutes. The area of usage: the theory of elasticity/plasticity, variation theory, theory of averagingAvailable from VNTIC / VNTIC - Scientific & Technical Information Centre of RussiaSIGLERURussian Federatio

Role of History in Vladimir Putin’s Foreign Policy

The subject of the article is dedicated to the evolution of the visible accent on the role of history and historico-civilizational heritage in formulation of Russia's foreign policy strategy in conceptual speeches of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in 2013-2015. His thesis on Russia as a country-civilization, proclaimed in Summer-Autumn 2013, became the basis for serious practical steps for activization of the foreign policy of Russia starting from 2014. It became clear mainly during the Ukrainian crisis, but also other key international events of the last two years. Another significant element of such a strategy was the thesis on the sacrality of history for Russia, exceeding far beyond a traditional focus on using the historical memory in current politics, that one can see in other states' examples. The consequence of that thesis is the feeling of specific historical responsibility in front of Russia for state politicians, also formulated by President Putin. All this could be considered as a new dimension of the moral basis of politics. One more focus of the article is on the role of new public political panels for proclaiming such a historically motivated politics, like the Valdai Discussion Club, etc
