Inspired by the Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), this doctoral research brings enlightenments on youth cultural consumption behavior in a contextualized approach, using the Cultural Studies framework. Ethnography of two cultural movements, Rap and Electrodance, explores youthâs cultural collective practices, while taking into account existing relations between these young consumers and their social and cultural environment. The manual and computer assisted analysis of field data brings to the foreground a chronological and structural reading grid allowing the understanding of both youth consumption practices and cultural movement evolution, of which youths are both members and promoters. Results show how youth cultural consumption structures itself around a stylistic set. Style embodies the visible part of youth movements, compared to any other consumer collectives, through which young consumers express resistance or differentiation from outsiders, whether it is dominant culture, parental culture or other movements. By adapting the cultural meaning transfer framework to young consumers, this work reveals reciprocal influence between cultural movement young members and their environment. In fact, even though the young consumer is still influenced by his (or her) social and cultural frame he grows up, he is also a âsense-builderâ whose practices and sense-making influences back the social and cultural frame. Beyond being a consumption prescriber in the family, a customer and a budding consumer, youth embodies a creative actor and a culture producer.
It " s in this context that this article aims to realize a state of the art of the various theoretical approaches of the youth subcultures " concept, particularly those from the British trend of Cultural Studies. First of all, the history of the subculture concept and then the main beliefs and the criticisms of this field are mentioned, in order to finish with the presentation of the contemporary theories called " post-subcultural " , and its uses.
When time matters: how to use a timeline built from ethnographic data
International audienceThis paper aims at justifying and formalizing the role of the diachronic approach, and its tool, the timeline, in ethnographic research with regard to the other methods that the researcher canmobilize to build a dynamic analysis of a phenomenon. This paper proposes to develop the effectiveimplementation of the timeline in two different contexts: BtoC and BtoB. We place the timeline asan analytical tool in a âdiachronicâ approach, for two main reasons. First, the concept stems from thelinguistic field and is dedicated to study the evolution of a language. In this sense, it can be stronglylinked to phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty, 1976) and to speech acts (Austin, 1970). It implies thatwe focus on the actors of a phenomenon, their representations of it and how these representations(and the wording they make of it) can influence the evolution of the experience in return. Second, we base our assumption on Geertzâs view about culture. The ethnography is a technique allowing to readthe culture as a text (Geertz, 1973). It is then possible to interpret and discover hidden meanings inthe text. So, the culture of an environment can be addressed as a literary text, which presents a socialsemantic, that a diachronic approach will apprehend in its evolutionary aspect

The Role of Joint Dynamics in the Evolution of Alternative Market Categories. A Sociohistorical Approach to Independent Music
This paper contributes to the understanding of market categorisation processes. More specifically, it analyses the evolution of the independent music category, characterised as a fuzzy category by its instability and as an alternative category by its power relations with the dominant mainstream music category. Based on a sociohistorical approach, we show how external forces such as boundary reconfigurations on the one hand and internal forces such as tension around category representations on the other shape the definition and evolution of the independent music market category. Our findings show the joint action of these dynamics in the emergence and evolution of alternative categories. They highlight the interest of simultaneously examining these multiple dynamics and their relationships in the study of market categories. Our paper also reveals the strategic and ideological issues associated with the alternative â mainstream dialectic, which constitutes a key factor in the structuring and evolution of many other industries
