A knowledge-based expert system for scheduling of airborne astronomical observations
The Kuiper Airborne Observatory Scheduler (KAOS) is a knowledge-based expert system developed at NASA Ames Research Center to assist in route planning of a C-141 flying astronomical observatory. This program determines a sequence of flight legs that enables sequential observations of a set of heavenly bodies derived from a list of desirable objects. The possible flight legs are constrained by problems of observability, avoiding flyovers of warning and restricted military zones, and running out of fuel. A significant contribution of the KAOS program is that it couples computational capability with a reasoning system

Shift-Symmetric Configurations in Two-Dimensional Cellular Automata: Irreversibility, Insolvability, and Enumeration
The search for symmetry as an unusual yet profoundly appealing phenomenon,
and the origin of regular, repeating configuration patterns have long been a
central focus of complexity science and physics. To better grasp and understand
symmetry of configurations in decentralized toroidal architectures, we employ
group-theoretic methods, which allow us to identify and enumerate these inputs,
and argue about irreversible system behaviors with undesired effects on many
computational problems. The concept of so-called configuration shift-symmetry
is applied to two-dimensional cellular automata as an ideal model of
computation. Regardless of the transition function, the results show the
universal insolvability of crucial distributed tasks, such as leader election,
pattern recognition, hashing, and encryption. By using compact enumeration
formulas and bounding the number of shift-symmetric configurations for a given
lattice size, we efficiently calculate the probability of a configuration being
shift-symmetric for a uniform or density-uniform distribution. Further, we
devise an algorithm detecting the presence of shift-symmetry in a
configuration.
Given the resource constraints, the enumeration and probability formulas can
directly help to lower the minimal expected error and provide recommendations
for system's size and initialization. Besides cellular automata, the
shift-symmetry analysis can be used to study the non-linear behavior in various
synchronous rule-based systems that include inference engines, Boolean
networks, neural networks, and systolic arrays.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 2 appendice
Street children’s vulnerability to HIV and sexually transmitted infections in Malawian cities
Background: Street children have largely been ignored in the fight against HIV and AIDS. While some initiatives exist, the nature of street life, probably has not allowed viable interventions to be implemented. However, this is a group of people that could qualify as a “most at risk” group. This study set out to explore street children’s vulnerability to sexual exploitation in the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe in Malawi.ObjectiveThe objective for this study was to explore street children’s vulnerability to HIV and STIs infection.DesignThis qualitative study employed In-depth interviews with street children in the two main cities of Malawi. A total of 23 street children were interviewed.ResultsThe study strongly suggests that street children could be vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. This is due to various factors which include low knowledge levels of STI and HIV, high risk sexual practices, lack of safer place to spend their nights for both boys and girls rendering them vulnerable to sexual abuses and the use of sex as a tool to secure protection and to be accepted especially for the newcomers on the street.ConclusionsThis study highlights street children’s vulnerability to sexual exploitation which predisposes them to risk of HIV and AIDS as well as Sexually Transmitted infections. Furthermore, the street environment offers no protection against such vulnerability. There is need to explore potential and context sensitive strategies that could be used to protect street children from sexual exploitation and HIV and AIDS infection

Controlled Delivery of Sdf-1 Alpha and Igf-1: Cxcr4(+) Cell Recruitment and Functional Skeletal Muscle Recovery
Therapeutic delivery of regeneration-promoting biological factors directly to the site of injury has demonstrated its efficacy in various injury models. Several reports describe improved tissue regeneration following local injection of tissue specific growth factors, cytokines and chemokines. Evidence exists that combined cytokine/growth factor treatment is superior for optimizing tissue repair by targeting different aspects of the regeneration response. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of the controlled delivery of stromal cell-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1 alpha) alone or in combination with insulin-like growth factor-I (SDF-1 alpha/IGF-I) for the treatment of tourniquet-induced ischemia/reperfusion injury (TK-I/R) of skeletal muscle. We hypothesized that SDF-1 alpha will promote sustained stem cell recruitment to the site of muscle injury, while IGF-I will induce progenitor cell differentiation to effectively restore muscle contractile function after TK-I/R injury while concurrently reducing apoptosis. Utilizing a novel poly-ethylene glycol PEGylated fibrin gel matrix (PEG-Fib), we incorporated SDF-1 alpha alone (PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha) or in combination with IGF-I (PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha/IGF-I) for controlled release at the site of acute muscle injury. Despite enhanced cell recruitment and revascularization of the regenerating muscle after SDF-1 alpha treatment, functional analysis showed no benefit from PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha therapy, while dual delivery of PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha/IGF-I resulted in IGF-I-mediated improvement of maximal force recovery and SDF-1 alpha-driven in vivo neovasculogenesis. Histological data supported functional data, as well as highlighted the important differences in the regeneration process among treatment groups. This study provides evidence that while revascularization may be necessary for maximizing muscle force recovery, without modulation of other effects of inflammation it is insufficient.Kinesiology and Health Educatio
The effect of progressive muscle relaxation on daily cortisol secretion
Abbreviated progressive muscle relaxation (APMR) is a much used stress-management technique. Its efficacy relevant to placebo control is already established in the literature and the primary aim of the present study was to ascertain whether its proven impact on psychological stress measures is matched by a decrease in prevailing levels of the stress-associated hormone cortisol, using accurate and robust measurement based on multiple sampling of full diurnal cortisol secretion profiles. First-year university students can face significant stress in adjustment to academic demands and immersion in a novel social network and provided a convenient study population. One hundred and one first-year students completed APMR with prevailing stress levels assessed a week before and after intervention. Both cortisol and self-report measures were significantly reduced post-intervention by 8% and 10%, respectively. The efficacy of the intervention was independent of, and not modulated by neuroticism, gender, age and smoking status. We also demonstrated that cortisol reduction was unlikely to have been a consequence of adaptation to any initial cortisol elevation prompted by the challenge of the demanding saliva collection protocol.
