The Socio-Cultural Implications of the Aging Population in Japan

    Get PDF
This capstone research looks at how Japan, as a nation, is dealing with aging populations as a society, what problems and solutions work for the Japanese, and how future studies and research on Japan’s elderly population could help lead for possible solutions for the global elderly. Through this capstone, I wanted to bring awareness to the Japanese elderly as well as generate light on the topic

Future climate impacts on Puget Sound oceanography: the North Pacific and hydrological context

    Get PDF
Climate change affects coastal and estuarine regions via a complex web of oceanic, atmospheric, hydrological, and biogeochemical processes. This talk summarizes the state of our knowledge regarding the relative importance of these pathways for Puget Sound, drawing on recent climate-downscaling model studies and retrospective analyses of observations by a number of research groups. Riverflow in the Puget Sound basin is expected to shift significantly in timing, and hydrodynamic modeling suggests that this will have direct effects on the seasonality of water-column stratification in Puget Sound, and potentially on the timing of the spring phytoplankton bloom. Contemporary projections of trends in upwelling-favorable winds are highly equivocal. A new regional model analysis suggests that the effects of even a substantial increase (20%) in upwelling on the Washington coast on nutrient and oxygen inputs in Puget Sound are likely to be at most comparable to the 50-year historical trend in sourcewater chemistry inherited from processes on the scale of the North Pacific. It may be many decades before long-term trends in ocean inputs exceed the range of natural decadal-scale variability, although some effects of climate change on Puget Sound--such as direct surface warming--will be felt much sooner

United States Long-Term Trends In Adult Bmi From 1959 To 2018 By Income, Education, And Race/ethnicity

Obesity prevalence has increased dramatically since the 1950s. While cross-sectional comparisons across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups are abundant, there is less work on long-term trends. We assessed trends in average adult body mass index (BMI) in the United States by income, education, and racial/ethnic groups from 1959 to 2018 using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which assesses repeated cross-sectional, representative samples of the United States population. Height, weight, income, education, and race variables were extracted from raw data files; income data was converted to constant dollars prior to analysis. BMI was calculated from height and weight measurements. Interrupted time series analysis was used to compare trendlines for each decile of household income, education levels, and racial/ethnic groups. SAS version 9.4 was used for all analyses and figures were plotted using OriginPro 2021. Average BMI increased in all groups over the sixty-year period examined and all slopes were positive. BMI trends did not differ by income group or between high school graduates and greater than high school graduates. Less than high school graduates had a slower increase (smaller slope) in BMI compared to greater than high school graduates. Compared to non-Hispanic White participants, Black participants had higher slopes, while Hispanic and other racial groups had slower increases. Interactions among these subgroups also contained a mix of significantly different and statistically similar BMI trends. In summary, disparities in BMI are relatively constant across income categories and education level for high school graduates, though not constant among those with less than high school education, while trends are different among racial groups. These ongoing trends suggest that interventions to effectively address the obesity epidemic should focus on systemic change

Why the United States lacks comprehensive National family leave policies: a comparative analysis

The United States has a substantial amount of resources, yet many outcomes are not on par with those of other high-income countries. This reflects in its social policies. National paid family leave is present in most countries, but the United States only provides unpaid leave. This paper examines how the United States developed its family leave policy and compares this to the policymaking processes in Sweden and Great Britain, which are two countries similar to the United States in resources and income, but unlike the United States, they provide national, paid family leave to its citizens. Political institutions such as party systems, interest groups, and public opinion are found to impact the policymaking process and further reflect the values in each country. Understanding how institutions impact policy development and outcomes is vital in learning why the United States lacks many of the comprehensive policies its peers have

The Potential of the Storyline Approach in Croatian ELT Classrooms

    Get PDF
The Storyline approach is a communicative and social constructivist approach to teaching a foreign language in which learners create their own, unique story that provides them with a meaningful context for the use of the target language and an opportunity to cover curricular objectives from the syllabus. In a typical Storyline project, learners work in groups, and by following the story framework previously designed by their teacher, they construct the characters, setting and all events in the story. Since the approach puts emphasis on pupils’ creativity and makes use of their various talents, pupils’ work is visually displayed on a classroom frieze. Teacher designs the line of Storyline episodes depending on the desired learning outcomes and curricular aims which need to be covered, and pupils have an opportunity to develop all four language skills by participating in the activities which they find meaningful and interesting. Since the Storyline approach is generally unknown in Croatian educational context, the aim of this thesis is to provide information about the crucial features of Storyline, as well as to present a study conducted for the purpose of this paper. The primary aim of the study was to investigate novice teachers’ perceptions on the Storyline method and to examine their opinion on the feasibility of Storyline in Croatian ELT classrooms. The author expected that participants would recognize the teaching potential of Storyline and that they would be willing to incorporate it in their classrooms. Those hypotheses proved to be correct, and results show that the majority of novice teachers think that it would be possible to implement some of its aspects to their classrooms, even though they are also aware of its possible drawbacks and obstacles
