Faith, Family, and Forbearance

In her work entitled A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson (1682), Mary Rowlandson of the Massachusetts Bay Colony describes her experience of being captured and kept prisoner by a group of Algonquian Indians for 11 weeks. As she relates this history, Rowlandson provides readers with a detailed account of the thoughts, emotions, and opinions she has while in captivity. Throughout this captivity, Rowlandson shows a remarkable faith and trust in God. This faith seems to experience a transformation during her time of imprisonment, from not being of great importance to her at the beginning of the history, to growing greatly through this trial. Further, Rowlandson’s faith seems to have an influence on how she views her family and the pain she experiences in regard to them, because of her great love for them. Rowlandson’s faith also teaches her the ability to adapt, even in times of great difficulty, and it helps her to develop the quality of forbearance. Finally, Rowlandson’s faith seems to grow through her experience of Indian captivity. Throughout her captivity, Mary Rowlandson’s faith experiences a progression as she turns to the Bible for help; her faith helps her face the tragedies in her family, it teaches her lessons about patience, and it grows stronger as a result of her experience

Visual Recognition of Females by Male \u3ci\u3eCalopteryx Maculata\u3c/i\u3e (Odonata: Calopterygidae)

In order to determine the function of the white wing stigma in Calopteryx mandata, males and females were marked or left unaltered, pinned onto a stick and presented to free ranging males. Male responses to females with blackened stigmas were minimal whereas most males responded to unaltered females, unaltered males, and altered males. It is suggested that presence of the white stigma, in combination with wing transparency, is important for male discrimination between the sexes

Advanced NDE research in electromagnetic, thermal, and coherent optics

A new inspection technology called magneto-optic/eddy current imaging was investigated. The magneto-optic imager makes readily visible irregularities and inconsistencies in airframe components. Other research observed in electromagnetics included (1) disbond detection via resonant modal analysis; (2) AC magnetic field frequency dependence of magnetoacoustic emission; and (3) multi-view magneto-optic imaging. Research observed in the thermal group included (1) thermographic detection and characterization of corrosion in aircraft aluminum; (2) a multipurpose infrared imaging system for thermoelastic stress detection; (3) thermal diffusivity imaging of stress induced damage in composites; and (4) detection and measurement of ice formation on the space shuttle main fuel tank. Research observed in the optics group included advancements in optical nondestructive evaluation (NDE)

Magnetic chirality as probed by neutron scattering

We review the concept of chirality, at first briefly in a general context then in the specific framework of the spin networks. We next discuss to what extent neutron scattering appears as an unconvertible tool to probe magnetic chirality in the static and dynamical regimes of the spins. The remarkable chiral ground state and excitations of the Fe-langasite compound finally serves to illustrate the use of neutron polarimetry in the experimental studies of the magnetic chirality.Comment: 32 page
