    Power grid integration and use-case study of acid-base flow battery technology

    There are many different types of energy storage systems (ESS) available and the functionality that they can provide is extensive. However, each of these solutions come with their own set of drawbacks. The acid-base flow battery (ABFB) technology aims to provide a route to a cheap, clean and safe ESS by means of providing a new kind of energy storage technology based on reversible dissociation of water via bipolar electrodialysis. First, the main characteristics of the ABFB technology are described briefly to highlight its main advantages and drawbacks and define the most-competitive use-case scenarios in which the technology could be applied, as well as analyze the particular characteristics which must be considered in the process of designing the power converter to be used for the interface with the electrical network. As a result, based on the use-cases defined, the ESS main specifications are going to be identified, pointing out the best power converter configuration alternatives. Finally, an application example is presented, showing an installation in the electrical network of Pantelleria (Italy) where a real pilot-scale prototype has been installed

    A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons

    We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.

    A novel emergency management platform for smart public safety

    This paper proposes an efficient architecture of a Smart Public Safety platform that involves public professional operators as well as citizens. The proposed system is compliant with the emerging paradigm of a Smart City. Its main features are that of monitoring, forecasting and managing emergency situations, arising from environmental disasters or crimes. The proposed platform performs a smart and functional integration of heterogeneous components as a Smart Data Gathering and Analysis system, a novel professional communication system, wireless sensor networks and social networks. Each element acts not only as an information collector, but has autonomous capabilities to cooperate with the others in order to increase the system efficiency and to reduce the need of human interactions. Finally, the paper highlights some open research issues that represent critical aspects and require additional investigations in order to further improve the performance of the proposed platform

Simultaneously, the worldwide urbanization process represents a formidable challenge and attracts attention toward cities that are expected to gather higher populations and provide citizens with services in an efficient and human manner. These two trends have led to the appearance of mobile health and smart cities. In this article we introduce the new concept of smart health, which is the context-aware complement of mobile health within smart cities. We provide an overview of the main fields of knowledge that are involved in the process of building this new concept. Additionally, we discuss the main challenges and opportunities that s-Health would imply and provide a common ground for further research
