    Dynamic Vector and Raster Integrated Data Model Based on Code-Points

    With the rapid development of remote sensing technology, the integration of raster data and vector data becomes more and more important. Raster data rnodels are used in tessellation spaces and vector data models are used in discrete spaces respectively. The relationships between tessellation space and discrete space have to be established for integrated data models. The minimum cells where both raster and vector data could be processed have to be defined. As it is very easy to establish relationships between vector points and corresponding raster cells, we defined those raster cells as Code-Points, the minimum cells where both raster and vector data could be processed. All vector elements such as lines, faces and bodies are composed directly or indirectly of Code-Points. This can be done by using interpolation algorithms to Code-Points in real-time. We have developed an integrated data model based on above procedures. In addition, we have developed a geometric primitive library for 3-Dimensional objects in order to improve the processing speed. This library could be hardware realized as a graphic accelerator card. If the conversion between vector and raster could be done in real time, the integrated data model could be used for operational integration of remote sensing and GIS. ? Springer-Verlag 2002.EI

    Why is management research irrelevant?

    At least since 1980, there has been a practically continuous, but somewhat fragmented discussion on the relevance of management research. This discussion has addressed practically all fields of management; here, besides general management, operations management, project management and construction management are examined in more detail. Although many different proposals have been made to rectify the situation, no definitive resolution has been found. In this paper, it is argued that prior analyses have not reached the root causes of the irrelevance problem. By an analysis of the recent history of management research, the following novel findings are reached. First, the root cause of the irrelevance is argued to lie in the 1959 reports on American business education, written by Pierson and Gordon & Howell. Second, while the proposed direction in the 1959 reports was deficient in several ways, the rejection of production as an integral part of organizations and management has been perhaps the most damaging feature of those reports. Third, current research on management suffers from a variety of immediate causes for irrelevance, insufficiently recognized by the scholarly community. It is suggested that reaching the root causes for irrelevance will facilitate finding suitable cures

    J. G. Ballard was a colossal figure in English literature and an imaginative force of the twentieth century. Alongside seminal novelsā€”from the notorious Crash (1973) to the semi-autobiographical Empire of the Sun (1984)ā€”Ballard was a sought-after reviewer and commentator, publishing journalism, memoir, and cultural criticism in a variety of forms. This volume collects the most significant short nonfiction of Ballard's fifty-year career, extending the range of the only previous collection of his nonfiction, A User's Guide to the Millennium (1996), which selected essays and reviews published between 1962 and 1995. A decade on from Ballard's death in 2009, a new generation of readers needs a new collection.     Aims: In the past decades the increasing focus by Australian pasture development programs on the genus Lotus has seen the evaluation of many species previously untested in Australia. In field trials, nodulation failure was commonplace. This work was undertaken to select effective symbionts for Lotus to ensure further agronomic evaluation of the genus was not compromised. The symbiotic needs of Lotus ornithopodioides were a particular focus of the studies. Methods: Glasshouse experiments were undertaken to evaluate symbiotic relationships between 15 Lotus spp and 23 strains of nodulating Mesorhizobium loti. This was followed by evaluation of elite rhizobial strains for their ability to persist and form nodules under field conditions. Results: Complex symbiotic interactions were recorded between strains of lotus rhizobia and the different species of Lotus. Notably, the rhizobia that are currently provided commercially in Australia for the inoculation of Lotus corniculatus (strain SU343) and Lotus uliginosus (strain CC829) did not form effective symbioses with the promising species L. ornithopodioides and L. maroccanus. No strain we evaluated was compatible with all the Lotus species, however several strains with a broad host range were identified. WSM1293 and WSM1348 were the most effective strains on L. ornithopodioides and L. peregrinus. These strains were also moderately effective on L. corniculatus (79 and 52% of SU343), less effective on L. maroccanus (26 and 49% of SRDI110) but were ineffective on L. uliginosus. The latter species overall had very specific rhizobial needs. Both WSM1293 and WSM1348 produced adequate levels of nodulation when inoculated on L. ornithopodioides, over two seasons at three field sites. Conclusions: Effective and persistent strains are now available that should allow the un-compromised evaluation of many of the contemporary Lotus species in the field. Selecting a strain for use in commercial inoculants will be more problematic, given the very large host-strain interactions for nitrogen fixation. Here, the balance of Lotus species which are adopted by farmers will have a strong bearing on which rhizobial strains are progressed to commerce

    Drug targets for cognitive enhancement in neuropsychiatric disorders

    The investigation of novel drug targets for treating cognitive impairments associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders remains a primary focus of study in central nervous system (CNS) research. Many promising new therapies are progressing through preclinical and clinical development, and offer the potential of improved treatment options for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) as well as other disorders that have not been particularly well treated to date like the cognitive impairments associated with schizophrenia (CIAS). Among targets under investigation, cholinergic receptors have received much attention with several nicotinic agonists (alpha 7 and alpha 4 beta 2) actively in clinical trials for the treatment of AD, CIAS and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Both glutamatergic and serotonergic (5-HT) agonists and antagonists have profound effects on neurotransmission and improve cognitive function in preclinical experiments with animals; some of these compounds are now in proof-of-concept studies in humans. Several histamine H3 receptor antagonists are in clinical development not only for cognitive enhancement, but also for the treatment of narcolepsy and cognitive deficits due to sleep deprivation because of their expression in brain sleep centers. Compounds that dampen inhibitory tone (e.g., GABA(A) alpha 5 inverse agonists) or elevate excitatory tone (e.g., glycine transporter inhibitors) offer novel approaches for treating diseases such as schizophrenia. AD and Down syndrome. In addition to cell surface receptors, intracellular drug targets such as the phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are known to impact signaling pathways that affect long-term memory formation and working memory. Overall, there is a genuine need to treat cognitive deficits associated with many neuropsychiatric conditions as well as an increasingly aging population.</p
