Space weathering: Laboratory analyses and in-situ instrumentation
Simulations of space weathering using laser irradiation are exploited to study the formation of sub-microscopic iron. A variety of magnetic techniques are evaluated to characterise this iron and are considered for in-situ instrumentation
The incidence and make up of ability grouped sets in the UK primary school
The adoption of setting in the primary school (pupils ability grouped across classes for particular subjects) emerged during the 1990s as a means to raise standards. Recent research based on 8875 children in the Millennium Cohort Study showed that 25.8% of children in Year 2 were set for literacy and mathematics and a further 11.2% of children were set for mathematics or literacy alone. Logistic regression analysis showed that the best predictors of being in the top set for literacy or mathematics were whether the child was born in the Autumn or Winter and cognitive ability scores. Boys were significantly more likely than girls to be in the bottom literacy set. Family circumstances held less importance for setting placement compared with the child’s own characteristics, although they were more important in relation to bottom set placement. Children in bottom sets were significantly more likely to be part of a long-term single parent household, have experienced poverty, and not to have a mother with qualifications at NVQ3 or higher levels. The findings are discussed in relation to earlier research and the implications for schools are set out
Kinematical twist-3 effects in DVCS as a quark spin rotation
We point out that the kinematical twist-3 contributions to the DVCS
amplitude, required to restore electromagnetic gauge invariance of the twist-2
amplitude up to O(t/q^2), can be understood as a spin rotation applied to the
twist-2 quark density matrix in the target. This allows for a compact
representation of the twist-3 effects, as well as for a simple physical
interpretation.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 3 eps figures included using eps
Resonant and nonresonant D+ -> K- pi+ l+ nu(l) semileptonic decays
We analyse the semileptonic decay D+ -> K- pi+ l+ nu(l) using an effective
Lagrangian developed previously to describe the decays D -> P l nu(l) and D ->
V l nu(l). Light vector mesons are included in the model which combines the
heavy quark effective Lagrangian and chiral perturbation theory approach. The
nonresonant and resonant contributions are compared. With no new parameters the
model correctly reproduces the measured ratio Gamma(nres)/Gamma(nres + res). We
also present useful nonresonant decay distributions. Finally, a similar model,
but with a modified current which satisfies the soft pion theorems at the
expense of introducing another parameter, is analyzed and the results of the
models are compared.Comment: 17 pages, 3 Postscript figures, standard Latex, extended revision,

Higgs Sector of the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model
We perform an exhaustive analysis of the most general Higgs sector of the
minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRM). We find that the CP properties of
the vacuum state are connected to the Higgs spectrum: if CP is broken
spontaneously, the MLRM does not approach the Standard Model in the limit of a
decoupling left-right symmetry breaking scale. Depending on the size of the CP
phases scenarios with extra non-decoupling flavor-violating doublet Higgses or
very light SU(2) triplet Higgses emerge, both of which are ruled out by
phenomenology. For zero CP phases the non-standard Higgses decouple only if a
very unnatural fine-tuning condition is fulfilled. We also discuss
generalizations to a non-minimal Higgs sector.Comment: brief discussion of non-minimal Higgs sectors added, journal versio
QCD factorization for forward hadron scattering at high energies
We consider the QCD factorization of DIS structure functions at small x and
amplitudes of 2->2 -hadronic forward scattering at high energy. We show that
both collinear and k_T-factorization for these processes can be obtained
approximately as reductions of a more general (totally unintegrated) form of
the factorization. The requirement of ultraviolet and infrared stability of the
factorization convolutions allows us to obtain restrictions on the fits for the
parton distributions in k_T- and collinear factorization.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures In the present version misprints found in the

Slavnov-Taylor identities in Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory
The Slavnov-Taylor identities of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory are derived
from the (standard, second order) functional formalism. It is shown how these
identities form closed sets from which one can in principle fully determine the
Green's functions involving the temporal component of the gauge field without
approximation, given appropriate input.Comment: 20 pages, no figure
Multiplicative renormalizability of gluon and ghost propagators in QCD
We reformulate the coupled set of continuum equations for the renormalized
gluon and ghost propagators in QCD, such that the multiplicative
renormalizability of the solutions is manifest, independently of the specific
form of full vertices and renormalization constants. In the Landau gauge, the
equations are free of renormalization constants, and the renormalization point
dependence enters only through the renormalized coupling and the renormalized
propagator functions. The structure of the equations enables us to devise novel
truncations with solutions that are multiplicatively renormalizable and agree
with the leading order perturbative results. We show that, for infrared power
law behaved propagators, the leading infrared behavior of the gluon equation is
not solely determined by the ghost loop, as concluded in previous studies, but
that the gluon loop, the three-gluon loop, the four-gluon loop, and even
massless quarks also contribute to the infrared analysis. In our new Landau
gauge truncation, the combination of gluon and ghost loop contributions seems
to reject infrared power law solutions, but massless quark loops illustrate how
additional contributions to the gluon vacuum polarization could reinstate these
solutions. Moreover, a schematic study of the three-gluon and four-gluon loops
shows that they too need to be considered in more detail before a definite
conclusion about the existence of infrared power behaved gluon and ghost
propagators can be reached.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Phys. Rev.
The energy dependence of the hard exclusive diffractive processes in pQCD as the function of momentum transfer
We predict the dependence on energy of photo(electro) production processes:
with large rapidity gap at small x and large
momentum transferred to in pQCD. Here V is a heavy quarkonium
() or longitudinally polarized light vector meson (in the
electroproduction processes), etc. In the kinematics of HERA we calculate the
dependence on energy of cross sections of these processes as the function of
momentum transfer , photon virtuality and/or quarkonium mass. In the
kinematical region the nontrivial energy dependence
of the cross section for the vector meson production due to the photon
scattering off a parton follows within QCD from the summing of the double
logarithmic terms. In the second regime within DGLAP
approximation in all orders of perturbation theory the
elastic cross section is energy independent. We show that the correct account
of the double logarithmic terms and of the gluon radiation including
kinematical constraints removes the disagreement between pQCD calculations and
recent HERA experimental data. The explicit formula for the dependence of the
differential cross section of these
processes on is obtained. We show that perturbative Pomeron
type behavior may reveal itself only at energies significantly larger than
those available at HERA. In addition we evaluate the energy dependence of DCVS
processes.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Critical Analysis of Theoretical Estimates for to Light Meson Form Factors and the Data
We point out that current estimates of form factors fail to explain the
non-leptonic decays and that the combination of data
on the semi-leptonic decays and on the non-leptonic
decays (in particular recent po\-la\-ri\-za\-tion
data) severely constrain the form (normalization and dependence) of the
heavy-to-light meson form factors, if we assume the factorization hypothesis
for the latter. From a simultaneous fit to \bpsi and \dk data we find that
strict heavy quark limit scaling laws do not hold when going from to
and must have large corrections that make softer the dependence on the masses.
We find that should increase slower with \qq than .
We propose a simple parametrization of these corrections based on a quark
model or on an extension of the \hhs laws to the \hl case, complemented with an
approximately constant . We analyze in the light of these data and
theoretical input various theoretical approaches (lattice calculations, QCD sum
rules, quark models) and point out the origin of the difficulties encountered
by most of these schemes. In particular we check the compatibility of several
quark models with the heavy quark scaling relations.Comment: 48 pages, DAPNIA/SPP/94-24, LPTHE-Orsay 94/1
