Utilizing Astroinformatics to Maximize the Science Return of the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey is a 104 square degree survey of the
Virgo Cluster, carried out using the MegaPrime camera of the
Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, from semesters 2009A-2012A. The survey will
provide coverage of this nearby dense environment in the universe to
unprecedented depth, providing profound insights into galaxy formation and
evolution, including definitive measurements of the properties of galaxies in a
dense environment in the local universe, such as the luminosity function. The
limiting magnitude of the survey is g_AB = 25.7 (10 sigma point source), and
the 2 sigma surface brightness limit is g_AB ~ 29 mag arcsec^-2. The data
volume of the survey (approximately 50 terabytes of images), while large by
contemporary astronomical standards, is not intractable. This renders the
survey amenable to the methods of astroinformatics. The enormous dynamic range
of objects, from the giant elliptical galaxy M87 at M(B) = -21.6, to the
faintest dwarf ellipticals at M(B) ~ -6, combined with photometry in 5 broad
bands (u* g' r' i' z'), and unprecedented depth revealing many previously
unseen structures, creates new challenges in object detection and
classification. We present results from ongoing work on the survey, including
photometric redshifts, Virgo cluster membership, and the implementation of fast
data mining algorithms on the infrastructure of the Canadian Astronomy Data
Centre, as part of the Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research

Bragg Grating Corrosion Sensor
Historically, corrosion has not been included in the calculation of the life expectancy of aircraft. It is well known how stress-corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue can significantly reduce the life expectancy of structures. Therefore, it can be correctly assumed that some aircraft flying near their expected life might actually be flying well beyond their âsafe lifeâ. Furthermore, due to DoD present tight budget requirements, its is expected that some defense aircraft might not be retired at their original expected life but will be reconditioned to fly beyond that time. All of these considerations indicate that early detection, quantification and prevention of corrosion is of critical importance for military aircraft. This is particularly true for Navy aircraft which fly in the most corrosive environment of all services
Theoretical Uncertainties in Electroweak Boson Production Cross Sections at 7, 10, and 14 TeV at the LHC
We present an updated study of the systematic errors in the measurements of
the electroweak boson cross-sections at the LHC for various experimental cuts
for a center of mass energy of 7, 10 and 14 TeV. The size of both electroweak
and NNLO QCD contributions are estimated, together with the systematic error
from the parton distributions. The effects of new versions of the MSTW, CTEQ,
and NNPDF PDFs are considered.Comment: PDFLatex with JHEP3.cls. 22 pages, 43 figures. Version 2 adds the

Selective expansion of viral variants following experimental transmission of a reconstituted feline immunodeficiency virus quasispecies
Following long-term infection with virus derived from the pathogenic GL8 molecular clone of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a range of viral variants emerged with distinct modes of interaction with the viral receptors CD134 and CXCR4, and sensitivities to neutralizing antibodies. In order to assess whether this viral diversity would be maintained following subsequent transmission, a synthetic quasispecies was reconstituted comprising molecular clones bearing envs from six viral variants and its replicative capacity compared in vivo with a clonal preparation of the parent virus. Infection with either clonal (Group 1) or diverse (Group 2) challenge viruses, resulted in a reduction in CD4+ lymphocytes and an increase in CD8+ lymphocytes. Proviral loads were similar in both study groups, peaking by 10 weeks post-infection, a higher plateau (set-point) being achieved and maintained in study Group 1. Marked differences in the ability of individual viral variants to replicate were noted in Group 2; those most similar to GL8 achieved higher viral loads while variants such as the chimaeras bearing the B14 and B28 Envs grew less well. The defective replication of these variants was not due to suppression by the humoral immune response as virus neutralising antibodies were not elicited within the study period. Similarly, although potent cellular immune responses were detected against determinants in Env, no qualitative differences were revealed between animals infected with either the clonal or the diverse inocula. However, in vitro studies indicated that the reduced replicative capacity of variants B14 and B28 in vivo was associated with altered interactions between the viruses and the viral receptor and co-receptor. The data suggest that viral variants with GL8-like characteristics have an early, replicative advantage and should provide the focus for future vaccine development
Hyperglycaemia and diabetes impair gap junctional communication among astrocytes
Sensory and cognitive impairments have been documented in diabetic humans and
animals, but the pathophysiology of diabetes in the central nervous system is
poorly understood. Because a high glucose level disrupts gap junctional
communication in various cell types and astrocytes are extensively coupled by
gap junctions to form large syncytia, the influence of experimental diabetes on
gap junction channel-mediated dye transfer was assessed in astrocytes in tissue
culture and in brain slices from diabetic rats. Astrocytes grown in
15â25 mmol/l glucose had a slow-onset, poorly reversible decrement in
gap junctional communication compared with those grown in 5.5 mmol/l glucose.
Astrocytes in brain slices from adult STZ (streptozotocin)-treated rats at
20â24 weeks after the onset of diabetes also exhibited reduced dye
transfer. In cultured astrocytes grown in high glucose, increased oxidative
stress preceded the decrement in dye transfer by several days, and gap
junctional impairment was prevented, but not rescued, after its manifestation by
compounds that can block or reduce oxidative stress. In sharp contrast with
these findings, chaperone molecules known to facilitate protein folding could
prevent and rescue gap junctional impairment, even in the presence of elevated
glucose level and oxidative stress. Immunostaining of Cx (connexin) 43 and 30,
but not Cx26, was altered by growth in high glucose. Disruption of astrocytic
trafficking of metabolites and signalling molecules may alter interactions among
astrocytes, neurons and endothelial cells and contribute to changes in brain
function in diabetes. Involvement of the microvasculature may contribute to
diabetic complications in the brain, the cardiovascular system and other
organs
Neural Network Parameterizations of Electromagnetic Nucleon Form Factors
The electromagnetic nucleon form-factors data are studied with artificial
feed forward neural networks. As a result the unbiased model-independent
form-factor parametrizations are evaluated together with uncertainties. The
Bayesian approach for the neural networks is adapted for chi2 error-like
function and applied to the data analysis. The sequence of the feed forward
neural networks with one hidden layer of units is considered. The given neural
network represents a particular form-factor parametrization. The so-called
evidence (the measure of how much the data favor given statistical model) is
computed with the Bayesian framework and it is used to determine the best form

Why are we not flooded by involuntary thoughts about the past and future? Testing the cognitive inhibition dependency hypothesis
© The Author(s) 2018In everyday life, involuntary thoughts about future plans and events occur as often as involuntary thoughts about the past. However, compared to involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs), such episodic involuntary future thoughts (IFTs) have become a focus of study only recently. The aim of the present investigation was to examine why we are not constantly flooded by IFTs and IAMs given that they are often triggered by incidental cues while performing undemanding activities. One possibility is that activated thoughts are suppressed by the inhibitory control mechanism, and therefore depleting inhibitory control should enhance the frequency of both IFTs and IAMs. We report an experiment with a between-subjects design, in which participants in the depleted inhibition condition performed a 60-min high-conflict Stroop task before completing a laboratory vigilance task measuring the frequency of IFTs and IAMs. Participants in the intact inhibition condition performed a version of the Stroop task that did not deplete inhibitory control. To control for physical and mental fatigue resulting from performing the 60-min Stroop tasks in experimental conditions, participants in the control condition completed only the vigilance task. Contrary to predictions, the number of IFTs and IAMs reported during the vigilance task, using the probe-caught method, did not differ across conditions. However, manipulation checks showed that participantsâ inhibitory resources were reduced in the depleted inhibition condition, and participants were more tired in the experimental than in the control conditions. These initial findings suggest that neither inhibitory control nor physical and mental fatigue affect the frequency of IFTs and IAMs.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Assessing Specific Cognitive Deficits Associated with Dementia in Older Adults with Down Syndrome: Use and Validity of the Arizona Cognitive Test Battery (ACTB)
BACKGROUND: Down syndrome is associated with specific cognitive deficits. Alongside this, older adults with Down syndrome are a high risk group for dementia. The Arizona Cognitive Test Battery (ACTB), a cognitive assessment battery specifically developed for use with individuals with Down syndrome, has been proposed for use as outcome measures for clinical trials in this population. It has not been validated in older adults with Down syndrome. This study aims to assess the use and validity of the ACTB in older adults with Down syndrome. METHODS: Participants with Down syndrome aged 45 and over were assessed using the ACTB, standard tabletop tests and informant ratings. RESULTS: Assessment outcomes of 49 participants were analysed. Of these, 19 (39%) had a diagnosis of dementia or possible dementia. Most participants were able to attempt most of the tasks, although some tasks had high floor effects (including CANTAB Intra-Extra Dimensional shift stages completed and Modified Dots Task). Of the ACTB tasks, statistically significant differences were observed between the dementia and no dementia groups on CANTAB Simple Reaction Time median latency, NEPSY Visuomotor Precision-Car and Motorbike and CANTAB Paired Associates Learning stages completed. No significant differences were observed for CANTAB Intra-Extra Dimensional Shift, Modified Dots Task, Finger Sequencing, NEPSY Visuomotor precision-Train and Car and CANTAB Paired Associates Learning first trial memory score. Several of the tasks in the ACTB can be used in older adults with Down syndrome and have mild to moderate concurrent validity when compared to tabletop tests and informant ratings, although this varies on a test by test basis. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, scores for a number of tests in the ACTB were similar when comparing dementia and no dementia groups of older adults with Down syndrome, suggesting that it would not be an appropriate outcome measure of cognitive function for clinical trials of dementia treatments without further modification and validation
