decays in the pQCD approach
We calculate the CP averaged branching ratios and CP-violating asymmetries
for and
decays in the perturbative QCD (pQCD) approach here. The pQCD predictions for
the CP-averaged branching ratios are Br(B_s^0 \to \eta \eta) = \left
(14.2^{+18.0}_{-7.5}) \times 10^{-6}, Br(B_s^0 \to \eta \eta^\prime)= \left
(12.4 ^{+18.2}_{-7.0}) \times 10^{-6}, and Br(B_s^0 \to \eta^{\prime}
\eta^{\prime}) = \left (9.2^{+15.3}_{-4.9}) \times 10^{-6}, which agree well
with those obtained by employing the QCD factorization approach and also be
consistent with available experimental upper limits. The gluonic contributions
are small in size: less than 7% for and
decays, and around 18% for decay. The CP-violating
asymmetries for three decays are very small: less than 3% in magnitude.Comment: 11 pages, 1 ps figure, Revte
Heavy-to-light transition form factors and their relations in light-cone QCD sum rules
The improved light-cone QCD sum rules by using chiral current correlator is
systematically reviewed and applied to the calculation of all the
heavy-to-light form factors, including all the semileptonic and penguin ones.
By choosing suitable chiral currents, the light-cone sum rules for all the form
factors are greatly simplified and depend mainly on one leading twist
distribution amplitude of the light meson. As a result, relations between these
form factors arise naturally. At the considered accuracy these relations
reproduce the results obtained in the literature. Moreover, since the explicit
dependence on the leading twist distribution amplitudes is preserved, these
relations may be more useful to simulate the experimental data and extract the
information on the distribution amplitude.Comment: 1+16 pages, no figure
Orthogonal on-rotor sensing vibrations for condition monitoring of rotating machines
Thanks to the fast development of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technologies, MEMS accelerometers show great potentialities for machine condition monitoring. To overcome the problems of a poor signal to noise ratio (SNR), complicated modulation, and high costs of vibration measurement and computation using conventional integrated electronics piezoelectric accelerometers, a triaxial MEMS accelerometer-based on-rotor sensing (ORS) technology was developed in this study. With wireless data transmission capability, the ORS unit can be mounted on a rotating rotor to obtain both rotational and transverse dynamics of the rotor with a high SNR. The orthogonal outputs lead to a construction method of analytic signals in the time domain, which is versatile in fault detection and diagnosis of rotating machines. Two case studies based on an induction motor were carried out, which demonstrated that incipient bearing defect and half-broken rotor bar can be effectively diagnosed by the proposed measurement and analysis methods. Comparatively, vibration signals from translational on-casing accelerometers are less capable of detecting such faults. This demonstrates the superiority of the ORS vibrations in fault detection of rotating machines
Toolbox for analyzing finite two-state trajectories
In many experiments, the aim is to deduce an underlying multi-substate on-off
kinetic scheme (KS) from the statistical properties of a two-state trajectory.
However, the mapping of a KS into a two-state trajectory leads to the loss of
information about the KS, and so, in many cases, more than one KS can be
associated with the data. We recently showed that the optimal way to solve this
problem is to use canonical forms of reduced dimensions (RD). RD forms are
on-off networks with connections only between substates of different states,
where the connections can have non-exponential waiting time probability density
functions (WT-PDFs). In theory, only a single RD form can be associated with
the data. To utilize RD forms in the analysis of the data, a RD form should be
associated with the data. Here, we give a toolbox for building a RD form from a
finite two-state trajectory. The methods in the toolbox are based on known
statistical methods in data analysis, combined with statistical methods and
numerical algorithms designed specifically for the current problem. Our toolbox
is self-contained - it builds a mechanism based only on the information it
extracts from the data, and its implementation on the data is fast (analyzing a
10^6 cycle trajectory from a thirty-parameter mechanism takes a couple of hours
on a PC with a 2.66 GHz processor). The toolbox is automated and is freely
available for academic research upon electronic request
Diffusion-limited aggregation as branched growth
I present a first-principles theory of diffusion-limited aggregation in two
dimensions. A renormalized mean-field approximation gives the form of the
unstable manifold for branch competition, following the method of Halsey and
Leibig [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 46}, 7793 (1992)]. This leads to a result for the
cluster dimensionality, D \approx 1.66, which is close to numerically obtained
values. In addition, the multifractal exponent \tau(3) = D in this theory, in
agreement with a proposed `electrostatic' scaling law.Comment: 13 pages, one figure not included (available by request, by ordinary

Enhanced Direct CP Violation in
We study direct CP violation in the hadronic decay , including the effect of mixing. We find
that the CP violating asymmetry is strongly dependent on the CKM matrix
elements, especially the Wolfenstein parameter . For fixed (the
effective parameter associated with factorization), the CP violating asymmetry,
, has a maximum of order when the invariant mass of the
pair is in the vicinity of the resonance. The
sensitivity of the asymmetry, , to is small. Moreover, if is
constrained using the latest experimental branching ratios from the CLEO
collaboration, we find that the sign of is always positive. Thus,
a measurement of direct CP violation in would
remove the mod ambiguity in .Comment: 37 pages, 7 figure
An Alternative Method to Obtain the Quark Polarization of the Nucleon
An alternate method is described to extract the quark contribution to the
spin of the nucleon directly from the first moment of the deuteron structure
function, . It is obtained without recourse to the use of input on the
nucleon wave function from hyperon decays involving the flavor symmetry
parameters, F and D. The result for the quark polarization of the nucleon,
is in good agreement with the values of the singlet axial
current matrix element, , obtained from recent next-to-leading order
analyses of current proton, neutron and deuteron data.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
in the Standard Model
In this paper we investigate the possibility of studying form
factor using the semi-inclusive decays . In general
semi-inclusive decays involve several hadronic parameters. But for
decays we find that in the factorization
approximation, the only unknown hadronic parameters are the form factors
. Therefore these form factors can be studied in decays. Using theoretical model calculations for the form
factors the branching ratios for and
, with the cut GeV, are
estimated to be in the ranges of and ,
respectively, depending on the value of . The combined branching ratio
for is about and is insensitive to . We also discuss CP
asymmetries in these decay modes.Comment: RevTex 8 pages and two figure
The detection of lubricating oil viscosity changes in gearbox transmission systems driven by sensorless variable speed drives using electrical supply parameters
Lubrication oil plays a decisive role to maintain a reliable and efficient operation of gear transmissions. Many offline methods have been developed to monitor the quality of lubricating oils. This work focus on developing a novel online method to diagnose oil degradation based on the measurements from power supply system to the gearbox. Experimental studies based on an 10kW industrial gearbox fed by a sensorless variable speed drive (VSD) shows that measurable changes in both static power and dynamic behaviour are different with lube oils tested. Therefore, it is feasible to use the static power feature to indicate viscosity changes at low and moderate operating speeds. In the meantime, the dynamic feature can separate viscosity changes for all different tested cases
Composition of the Pseudoscalar Eta and Eta' Mesons
The composition of the eta and eta' mesons has long been a source of
discussion and is of current interest with new experimental results appearing.
We investigate what can be learnt from a number of different processes: V to P
gamma and P to V gamma (V and P are light vector and pseudoscalar mesons
respectively), P to gamma gamma, J/psi,psi' to P gamma, J/psi,psi' to P V, and
chi_{c0,2} to PP. These constrain the eta-eta' mixing angle to a consistent
value, phi approx 42 degrees; we find that the c cbar components are lesssim 5%
in amplitude. We also find that, while the data hint at a small gluonic
component in the eta', the conclusions depend sensitively on unknown form
factors associated with exclusive dynamics. In addition, we predict BR(psi' to
eta' gamma) approx 1 10^{-5} and BR(chi_{c0} to eta eta') approx 2 10^{-5} - 1
10^{-4}. We provide a method to test the mixing using chi_{c2} to eta eta, eta'
eta', and eta eta' modes and make some general observations on chi_{c0,2}
decays. We also survey the semileptonic and hadronic decays of bottom and
charmed mesons and find some modes where the mixing angle can be extracted
cleanly with the current experimental data, some where more data will allow
this, and some where a more detailed knowledge of the different amplitudes is
required.Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures. v2: version published in JHEP, added
