    peer reviewedThe text is related to the calculus’s main theorem learning as it is studied by students in the last year of Belgium secondary school. We make an epistemological analysis of the theorem that inspired us the set up of a situation composed of four mathematics statements and for which we need rectilinear movements with or without variable speeds, speeding and moving laws, areas, volumes and flows. The suggested strategies for these statements and the reactions will be analysed later

    Concepts of Addiction: Assessing the Beliefs of Addiction in University and Treatment Center Populations

    This study sought to identify differences in the beliefs about addiction between a sample of university students (N=81) and a sample of clients diagnosed with substance abuse or dependence from a drug/alcohol treatment center (N=14). It was hypothesized that treatment center clients would present beliefs that correspond to the disease concept of addiction (Jellinek 1960), while members of the university sample would express more personal or environmental attitudes towards addiction. To assess these potential differences, a survey questionnaire based on the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI) was administered to both samples (Luke, Ribisl, Walton, and Davidson, 2002). Results of t-tests showed that university students and treatment center clients differed in their responses on the Inability to Control [t(93)= -4.12, p\u3c0.05], Chronic Disease [t(93)= 3.22, p\u3c0.05], and Responsibility for Action [t(93)=3.22, p\u3c0.05] subscales. Limitations of the current study and suggestions for future research are also discussed

    Modifications to the SPS LSS6 Septa for LHC and the SPS Septa Diluters

    The Large Hadron Collider required the modification of the existing extraction channel in the long straight section (LSS) 6 of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), including the suppression of the electrostatic wire septa. The newly set up fast extraction will be used to transfer protons at 450 GeV/c as well as ions via the 2.9 km long transfer line TI 2 to Ring 1 of the LHC. The girder of the existing SPS DC septa was modified to accommodate a new septum protection element. Changes were also applied to the septum diluter in the fast extraction channel in LSS4, leading to the other LHC ring and the CNGS facility. The requirements and the layout of the new LSS6 extraction channel will be described including a discussion of the design and performance of the installed septum diluters

    Septa and Distributor Developments for H- Injection into the Booster from LINAC4

    The construction of Linac4 requires the modification of the existing injection system of the CERN PS Booster. A new transfer line will transport 160 MeV H- ions to this machine. A system of 5 pulsed magnets (BIDIS) and 3 vertical septa (BISMV) will distribute and inject the Linac pulses into the four-vertically separated Booster rings. Subsequently the beam will be injected horizontally, using a local bump created with bumpers (BS magnets) to bring the injected H- beam together with the orbiting proton beam onto the stripper foil. To accommodate the injected H- beam, the first of the BS magnets will have to be a septum-like device, deflecting only the orbiting beam. This paper highlights the requirements and technical issues and describes the solutions to be adopted for both the BIDIS and BISMV. The results of initial prototype testing of the BIDIS magnet will also be presented
