    Physical properties of 6dF dwarf galaxies

    Spectral synthesis is basically the decomposition of an observed spectrum in terms of the superposition of a base of simple stellar populations of various ages and metallicities, producing as output the star formation and chemical histories of a galaxy, its extinction and velocity dispersion. The STARLIGHT code provides one of the most powerful spectral synthesis tools presently available. We have applied this code to the entire Six-Degree-Field Survey (6dF) sample of nearby star-forming galaxies, selecting dwarf galaxy candidates with the goal of: (1) deriving the age and metallicity of their stellar populations and (2) creating a database with the physical properties of our sample galaxies together with the FITS files of pure emission line spectra (i.e. the observed spectra after subtraction of the best-fitting synthetic stellar spectrum). Our results yield a good qualitative and quantitative agreement with previous studies based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). However, an advantage of 6dF spectra is that they are taken within a twice as large fiber aperture, much reducing aperture effects in studies of nearby dwarf galaxies.Comment: To appear in JENAM Symposium "Dwarf Galaxies: Keys to Galaxy Formation and Evolution", P.     Stein fillings and SU(2) representations

    We recently defined invariants of contact 3-manifolds using a version of instanton Floer homology for sutured manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if several contact structures on a 3-manifold are induced by Stein structures on a single 4-manifold with distinct Chern classes modulo torsion then their contact invariants in sutured instanton homology are linearly independent. As a corollary, we show that if a 3-manifold bounds a Stein domain that is not an integer homology ball then its fundamental group admits a nontrivial homomorphism to SU(2). We give several new applications of these results, proving the existence of nontrivial and irreducible SU(2) representations for a variety of 3-manifold groups

    Invariants of Legendrian and transverse knots in monopole knot homology

    We use the contact invariant defined in [2] to construct a new invariant of Legendrian knots in Kronheimer and Mrowka's monopole knot homology theory (KHM), following a prescription of Stipsicz and V\'ertesi. Our Legendrian invariant improves upon an earlier Legendrian invariant in KHM defined by the second author in several important respects. Most notably, ours is preserved by negative stabilization. This fact enables us to define a transverse knot invariant in KHM via Legendrian approximation. It also makes our invariant a more likely candidate for the monopole Floer analogue of the "LOSS" invariant in knot Floer homology. Like its predecessor, our Legendrian invariant behaves functorially with respect to Lagrangian concordance. We show how this fact can be used to compute our invariant in several examples. As a byproduct of our investigations, we provide the first infinite family of nonreversible Lagrangian concordances between prime knots

    Khovanov homology detects the trefoils

    We prove that Khovanov homology detects the trefoils. Our proof incorporates an array of ideas in Floer homology and contact geometry. It uses open books; the contact in-variants we defined in the instanton Floer setting; a bypass exact triangle in sutured instanton homology, proven here; and Kronheimer and Mrowka’s spectral sequence relating Khovanov homology with singular instanton knot homology. As a by product, we also strengthen a result of Kronheimer and Mrowka on SU(2) representations of the knot group

    In “Knots, sutures, and excision” (J. Differential Geom. 84, 301–364), Kronheimer and Mrowka defined invariants of balanced sutured manifolds using monopole and instanton Floer homology. Their invariants assign isomorphism classes of modules to balanced sutured manifolds. In this paper, we introduce refinements of these invariants which assign much richer algebraic objects called projectively transitive systems of modules to balanced sutured manifolds and isomorphisms of such systems to diffeomorphisms of balanced sutured manifolds. Our work provides the foundation for extending these sutured Floer theories to other interesting functorial frameworks as well, and can be used to construct new invariants of contact structures and (perhaps) of knots and bordered 3-manifolds

    Instanton Floer homology and contact structures

    We define an invariant of contact 3-manifolds with convex boundary using Kronheimer and Mrowka’s sutured instanton Floer homology theory. This is the first invariant of contact manifolds—with or without boundary—defined in the instanton Floer setting. We prove that our invariant vanishes for overtwisted contact structures and is nonzero for contact manifolds with boundary which embed into Stein fillable contact manifolds. Moreover, we propose a strategy by which our contact invariant might be used to relate the fundamental group of a closed contact 3-manifold to properties of its Stein fillings. Our construction is inspired by a reformulation of a similar invariant in the monopole Floer setting defined by Baldwin and Sivek (arXiv:1403.1930, 2014)

    Ionization Conditions in the Central Giant HII Region of NGC 5253

    We are carrying out a detailed 2D spectroscopic study of the central 210 pc X 130 pc of the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC5253. This contribution presents the ionization conditions and chemical abundance patterns for the different kinematic components of the ionized gas detected in our previous work. All the kinematic components present an excess in nitrogen abundance. In particular, the broad velocity component has larger excess than the narrow one by a factor of ~1.4+-0.4 which is consistent with a scenario for the Giant HII Region where the broad component of the emission lines traces the material expelled by the two central Super Star Clusters while the narrow one is associated to previously existing ionized gas.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures: in JENAM Symposium "Dwarf Galaxies: Keys to Galaxy Formation and Evolution", P.     Methyl jasmonate-elicited herbivore resistance: does MeJA function as a signal without being hydrolyzed to JA?

    Treatment with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) elicits herbivore resistance in many plant species and over-expression of JA carboxyl methyltransferase (JMT) constitutively increases JA-induced responses in Arabidopsis. When wild-type (WT) Nicotiana attenuata plants are treated with MeJA, a rapid transient endogenous JA burst is elicited, which in turn increases levels of nicotine and trypsin proteinase inhibitors (TPIs) and resistance to larvae of the specialist herbivore, Manduca sexta. All of these responses are impaired in plants silenced in lipoxygenase 3 expression (asLOX3) but are restored to WT levels by MeJA treatment. Whether these MeJA-induced responses are directly elicited by MeJA or by its cleavage product, JA, is unknown. Using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), we silenced MeJA-esterase (NaMJE) expression and found this gene responsible for most of the MeJA-cleaving activity in N. attenuata protein extracts. Silencing NaMJE in asLOX3, but not in WT plants, significantly reduced MeJA-induced nicotine levels and resistance to M. sexta, but not TPI levels. MeJA-induced transcript levels of threonine deaminase (NaTD) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (NaPAL1) were also decreased in VIGS MJE (asLOX3) plants. Finally the performance of M. sexta larvae that fed on plants treated with JA or MeJA demonstrated that silencing NaMJE inhibited MeJA-induced but not JA-induced resistance in asLOX3 plants. From these results, we conclude that the resistance elicited by MeJA treatment is directly elicited not by MeJA but by its de-methylated product, JA

    Multi-product firms and exporting: a developing country perspective

    In this paper we make the distinction between single-product and multi-product firms to contribute to our understanding of the complex relationship between multinational enterprises (MNEs), exporting and economic development. Using firm-level data for Thailand we show that the number of goods produced causes a larger variation in exports volumes than production volumes. Whilst the number of products and the total volume of exports are positively correlated we find, in contrast to US studies, a negative correlation between the number of products produced and the volume of production per product. We then investigate the characteristics associated with multi-product firms and find a distinction between foreign-owned and domestic firms. The presence of foreign firms producing single products solely for the domestic market as well as those producing many products for export demonstrates the diversity of behaviour of foreign-owned firms in developing countries

    Cost-effectiveness of sentinel lymph node biopsy vs inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy in women with vulval cancer

    background: This study examines the cost-effectiveness of sentinel lymph node biopsy, a potentially less morbid procedure, compared with inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy (IFL) among women with stage I and stage II vulval squamous cell carcinoma. methods: A model-based economic evaluation was undertaken based on clinical evidence from a systematic review of published sources. A decision tree model was developed with the structure being informed by clinical input, taking the perspective of the health-care provider. results: For overall survival for 2 years, IFL was found to be the most cost-effective option and dominated all other strategies, being the least costly and most effective. For morbidity-free related outcomes for 2 years, sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy with 99mTc and blue dye and haematoxylin & eosin (H&E) histopathology, with ultrastaging and immunohistochemistry reserved for those that test negative following H&E is likely to be the most effective approach. conclusion: SLN biopsy using 99mTc and blue dye with ultrastaging may be considered the most cost-effective strategy based on the outcome of survival free of morbidity for 2 years. The findings here also indicate that using blue dye and H&E for the identification of the SLN and the identification of metastasis, respectively, are not sensitive enough to be used on their own
