Fumigation of Burrowing Rodents with Carbon Monoxide: A Comparison to Alternative Management Options
Pocket gophers and ground squirrels cause extensive damage to many crops. Pressurized exhaust injection devices are increasingly used for managing these rodents, although no data were available to support their use. Therefore, we established a study to: 1) determine the efficacy of pressurized exhaust machines for pocket gopher and ground squirrel management, 2) compare these results to other burrow fumigant options, and 3) compare their cost effectiveness. Specifically, we tested two different pressurized exhaust machines for both ground squirrels and pocket gophers: Pressurized Exhaust Rodent Controller (PERC), and 2) Cheetah rodent control machine. For California ground squirrels, efficacy for the PERC machine was greater in moist soils (mean = 100%) than in drier soils (mean = 66%). Initial treatments using the PERC machine were more expensive than other burrow fumigation options, given the large cost of the machine. However, costs quickly dropped below that of gas cartridges (~44 days), and eventually dropped below that of aluminum phosphide if used extensively (~830 days). Efficacy for the Cheetah rodent control machine was far less encouraging for California ground squirrels, with results showing increased squirrel numbers at treatment sites (mean = +115%) post-treatment. For pocket gophers, aluminum phosphide (mean = 86%) and trapping (mean = 81%) proved to be more effective than PERC applications (mean = 56%) in heavy organic soils. We observed somewhat greater PERC efficacy in mineral soils (mean = 68%), suggesting potential variability in efficacy across soil types. At this point, the use of the PERC machine appears to be a viable option for inclusion into Integrated Pest Management programs for burrowing rodents where alternative options are limited; the Cheetah rodent control machine showed no utility for ground squirrel management in our study. More extensive testing of pressurized exhaust devices in differing soil types and under variable moisture levels is needed to determine their utility across a broader spectrum of treatment situations
Decay of far flow field in trailing vortices
A finite difference machine code is used in the wake vortex problems in the quasi-cylindrical boundary layer approximation. A turbulent energy model containing new features is developed that accounts for the major effects disclosed by more advanced models in which the parameters are not yet established. Mixing effectiveness in the Apollo oxygen tanks of spin-up and rotation-reversal maneuvers
Two-dimensional simulations of stratified flows in the Apollo oxygen tanks have been used to estimate the mixing effectiveness of spin-up and rotation-reversal maneuvers. Calculations have been made for square and circular cylindrical tank geometries. Differences arising from heater position on the tank wall or near the center of the tank have been investigated. In the event of a prolonged period without normal maneuvers, the potential pressure decay (drop in pressure that would result from adiabatic mixing) can be suppressed by more than a factor of two through the use of spin-up and rotation-reversal maneuvers. Changes in rotation rate of order three revolutions per hour or greater are sufficient for this purpose
String Theory in the Penrose Limit of AdS_2 x S^2
The string theory in the Penrose limit of AdS_2 x S^2 is investigated. The
specific Penrose limit is the background known as the Nappi-Witten spacetime,
which is a plane-wave background with an axion field. The string theory on it
is given as the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) model on non-semi-simple
group H_4. It is found that, in the past literature, an important type of
irreducible representations of the corresponding algebra, h_4, were missed. We
present this "new" representations, which have the type of continuous series
representations. All the three types of representations of the previous
literature can be obtained from the "new" representations by setting the
momenta in the theory to special values. Then we realized the affine currents
of the WZNW model in terms of four bosonic free fields and constructed the
spectrum of the theory by acting the negative frequency modes of free fields on
the ground level states in the h_4 continuous series representation. The
spectrum is shown to be free of ghosts, after the Virasoro constraints are
satisfied. In particular we argued that there is no need for constraining one
of the longitudinal momenta to have unitarity. The tachyon vertex operator,
that correspond to a particular state in the ground level of the string
spectrum, is constructed. The operator products of the vertex operator with the
currents and the energy-momentum tensor are shown to have the correct forms,
with the correct conformal weight of the vertex operator.Comment: 30 pages, Latex, no figure
An Innovative Approach for Community Engagement: Using an Audience Response System
Community-based participatory research methods allow for community engagement in the effort to reduce cancer health disparities. Community engagement involves health professionals becoming a part of the community in order to build trust, learn from the community and empower them to reduce disparities through their own initiatives and ideas. Audience Response Systems (ARS) are an innovative and engaging way to involve the community and obtain data for research purposes using keypads to report results via power point. The use of ARS within communities is very limited and serves to widen the disparity gap by not delivering new advances in medical knowledge and technology among all population groups. ARS was implemented at a community town hall event sponsored by a National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Exploratory Center of Excellence, the Center for Equal Health. Participants appreciated being able to see how everyone else answered and felt included in the research process. ARS is beneficial because the community can answer truthfully and provides instant research results. Additionally, researchers can collect large amounts of data quickly, in a non-threatening way while tracking individual responses anonymously. Audience Response Systems proved to be an effective tool for successfully accomplishing community-based participatory research
Public policy, footloose capital, and union influence
This document sets up a unionized general oligopolistic equilibrium model of countries, where capital is footloose and governments maximize utilitarian welfare. When capital owners have weak influence on public policy, there is unemployment and the governments compete for jobs, causing a distortion with suboptimal wages. Then globalization -- as characterized by a decrease in impediments to international investment -- increases the wage elasticity of capital flight, decreasing wages and increasing employment. This benefits the capital owners and the unemployed workers getting a job, but harms the other workers. International coordination of public policy alleviates these consequences of globalization.Peer reviewe
