    Analysis of forest product trade relationships between Turkey and European Union member states

    The countries have needed to strengthen their trade relationships in the face of increasing competition conditions with globalization and a lot of unions emerged all over the world. The European Union, remaining in the foreground as an economical, commercial and political factor in these unions, possesses considerable influence, which a lot of countries want to be involved in. Turkey, being in the European integration process, looks for a place in European Union (EU) with its own resources and production power. Production and foreign trade data of the forest products industry, being among Turkey’s important sectors, were compared with 25 different EU countries by using hierarchical cluster analysis, and Turkey’s trade relationship was determined. The production amounts, import and exportamounts and the values, between 2002 and 2006, belonging to the EU member countries and Turkey were used. It has been found that all countries could be divided into nine different groups according tocountries’ forest products industry structures. Competition advantage is experienced in the board sector but not in the paper and lumber sectors. The forest products industry sectors of Turkey have the capacity to compete with EU countries

    Stimulation of oxidative phosphorylation by calcium in cardiac mitochondria is not influenced by cAMP and PKA activity

    AbstractCardiac oxidative ATP generation is finely tuned to match several-fold increases in energy demand. Calcium has been proposed to play a role in the activation of ATP production via PKA phosphorylation in response to intramitochondrial cAMP generation. We evaluated the effect of cAMP, its membrane permeable analogs (dibutyryl-cAMP, 8-bromo-cAMP), and the PKA inhibitor H89 on respiration of isolated pig heart mitochondria. cAMP analogs did not stimulate State 3 respiration of Ca2+-depleted mitochondria (82.2±3.6% of control), in contrast to the 2-fold activation induced by 0.95μM free Ca2+, which was unaffected by H89. Using fluorescence and integrating sphere spectroscopy, we determined that Ca2+ increased the reduction of NADH (8%), and of cytochromes bH (3%), c1 (3%), c (4%), and a (2%), together with a doubling of conductances for Complex I+III and Complex IV. None of these changes were induced by cAMP analogs nor abolished by H89. In Ca2+-undepleted mitochondria, we observed only slight changes in State 3 respiration rates upon addition of 50μM cAMP (85±9.9%), dibutyryl-cAMP (80.1±5.2%), 8-bromo-cAMP (88.6±3.3%), or 1μM H89 (89.7±19.9%) with respect to controls. Similar results were obtained when measuring respiration in heart homogenates. Addition of exogenous PKA with dibutyryl-cAMP or the constitutively active catalytic subunit of PKA to isolated mitochondria decreased State 3 respiration by only 5–15%. These functional studies suggest that alterations in mitochondrial cAMP and PKA activity do not contribute significantly to the acute Ca2+ stimulation of oxidative phosphorylation

    Can adding Ephedrine to Admixture of Propofol & Lidocaine Overcome Propofol Associated Hemodynamic Changes and Injection Pain?

    Purpose: There are numerous studies researching ways to alleviate propofol injection pain. In this study, we evaluated and compared the use of propofol-lidocaine admixture vs propofol-lidocaine combined with ephedrine, on vascular pain and hemodynamic changes associated propofol. Methods: This double-blinded, prospective, randomised study was performed on 100 patients with ASA I-II who were divided into two group. The first received admixture consisting of 20 mg of lidocaine and propofol 1% 20 ml (Group L), and the other received admixture consisting of 20 mcg ephedrine, 20 mg lidocaine and propofol 1% 20 ml (Group LE). Baseline and after induction heart rate, mean arterial pressure and rate pressure product (RPP) were recorded per minute. Vascular pain were evaluated with verbal rating scale. Results: Data of 40 patients in group L and 39 patients in Group LE were evaluated in the study. The incidence of pain in group L was 90%, it was 38.4% for Group LE. Mild pain was observed significantly more in Group L when compared to Group LE (p<0.05). Average blood pressure and RPP immediately after induction and 1 min after intubation were significantly higher in group LE compared to group L (p<0.05). Heart rate was higher in Group LE immediately after induction and at initially 4 minutes after intubation. Conclusion: Our study has demonstrated significant decrease in rate of vascular pain and increased hemodynamic stability in patients receiving 20 mg ephedrine added to 20 ml % 1 propofol and 20 mg lidocaine admixture when compared to those who only received the lidocaine-propofol admixtur

    Examination of forest products trade between Turkey and European Union countries with gravity model approach

    The success of getting in the foreign trade forms one of the basic stones of economic development for countries. The current and potential trading volume among countries and determining the main factors affecting trade are quite important. The trade currents of the European Union (EU) countries and Turkey in the forest products industry field were analyzed by the gravity model in this study. For this reason, the panel data method was used for 2000 - 2006 periods. The results show the existence of a high degree of trade integration between Turkey and EU. The estimated gravity models explained 63% of the variation regarding the volume of bilateral trade flows in the EU and Turkey. Furthermore, it was determined that GDP had a positive effect on the amount of foreign trade while distance had a negativeeffect; and Turkey has lower trading volume with the EU countries than its potential regarding the forest products industry field

    Strong, Ultra-narrow Peaks of Longitudinal and Hall Resistances in the Regime of Breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect

    With unusually slow and high-resolution sweeps of magnetic field, strong, ultra-narrow (width down to 100μT100 {\rm \mu T}) resistance peaks are observed in the regime of breakdown of the quantum Hall effect. The peaks are dependent on the directions and even the history of magnetic field sweeps, indicating the involvement of a very slow physical process. Such a process and the sharp peaks are, however, not predicted by existing theories.     Absence of Scaling in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect

    We have studied the conductivity peak in the transition region between the two lowest integer Quantum Hall states using transmission measurements of edge magnetoplasmons. The width of the transition region is found to increase linearly with frequency but remains finite when extrapolated to zero frequency and temperature. Contrary to prevalent theoretical pictures, our data does not show the scaling characteristics of critical phenomena.These results suggest that a different mechanism governs the transition in our experiment.Comment: Minor changes and new references include
