Spectroscopy of the post-AGB star HD 101584(IRAS 11385-5517)

From an analysis of the spectrum (4000\AA to 8800\AA) of HD~101584 it is found that most of the neutral and single ionized metallic lines are in emission. The forbidden emission lines of [OI] 6300\AA and 6363\AA and [CI] 8727\AA are detected, which indicate the presence of a very low excitation nebula. The H$\alpha$, FeII 6383\AA, NaI D$_{1}$, D$_{2}$ lines and the CaII IR triplet lines show P-Cygni profiles indicating a mass outflow. The H$\alpha$ line shows many velocity components in the profile. The FeII 6383\AA also has almost the same line profile as the H$\alpha$ line indicating that they are formed in the same region. From the spectrum synthesis analysis we find the atmospheric parameters to be T$_{eff}$=8500K, log g=1.5, V$_{turb}$=13km~s$^{-1}$ and [Fe/H]=0.0. From an analysis of the absorption lines the photospheric abundances of some of the elements are derived. Carbon and nitrogen are found to be overabundant. From the analysis of Fe emission lines we derived T$_{exi}$=6100K$\pm$200 for the emission line region.Comment: To appear in A&A, 15 pages, 11 figure

Coronavirus Cures and the Courts

The coronavirus pandemic has drastically affected nearly every aspect of American life. Unfortunately, it has also created an opportunity for those willing to exploit vulnerable citizens by selling fake “cures.” This Article analyzes a lawsuit against televangelist Jim Bakker for doing just that. This Article also calls for increased protection for individuals when a global health pandemic and national emergency have been declared. This Article advocates a novel proposal—the enacting of a federal statute making it a felony for an individual to knowingly sell a fraudulent cure for any disease that has been designated a pandemic by the World Health Organization and in which the President of the United States has designated a national emergency. The following federal criminal statute is proposed: Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, for the express knowing purpose of obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises of a cure for a disease designated by the World Health Organization as a global pandemic and designated by the President of the United States as a national emergency pursuant to the provisions of the National Emergencies Act, shall be fined not more than $2,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 50 years, or both. This potent statute will help deter individuals such as Jim Bakker from fraudulently selling “cures” during a pandemic crisis. Additionally, it will serve as a preventative measure in limiting the spread of a deadly pandemic disease such as coronavirus

Mortar and concrete based on calcium sulphate binders

In this study both hemi-hydrate and anhydrite are tested as calcium sulphate binders for structural mortar and concrete. The advantage of using calcium sulphates instead of cement as a binder is the fact that the production of calcium sulphate is more environmental friendly than that of cement. KB-WOT Quality assurance acoustics: overview and protocols 2008 version

The quality of IMARES' acoustic surveys proved quite unstable in recent years despite extra effort in this field to bring this instability down. The amount of involved scientists in acoustics has been small compared to demersal survey work. Therefore scientific standards of acoustic surveys are relatively low compared resulting in poor standardisation and minimal transparency. Highly specialised technical work made it even more difficult to exchange scientists within IMARES and the quality of acoustic surveys proved to be very sensitive to loss or change in personnel. This situation improved drastically in 2008 when more scientists got involved in acoustic projects and more effort was put in standardisation

Exploring a curatorial turn in journalism

Curation has moved from the ‘rarefied’ atmosphere of museums and exhibitions into journalism where new discourses and practices are proliferating. The changes have attracted academic attention such that journalism is now facing its own curatorial turn akin to what Paul O’Neill identified in museum studies. This article draws on a meta-analysis of journal articles in the field to argue that the prevalent instrumentalist definitions of curation are necessary but not sufficient to capture what the shifts in discourse and practices mean for journalism. In order to derive a more nuanced conceptualization of curation that includes the instrumental and metaphorical, the article draws on literature beyond the field of journalism studies to trace the changing meanings of the term from curation from antiquity to the digital age. The conditions are propitious for the movement of new practices into newsrooms but where it fits in relation to existing professions is intellectually unclear because of a lack of conceptual clarity as to how curation overlaps and differs from other roles. The article offers a preliminary attempt to address this
