    Comparison of relativistic bound-state calculations in Front-Form and Instant-Form Dynamics

    Using the Wick-Cutkosky model and an extended version (massive exchange) of it, we have calculated the bound states in a quantum field theoretical approach. In the light-front formalism we have calculated the bound-state mass spectrum and wave functions. Using the Terent'ev transformation we can write down an approximation for the angular dependence of the wave function. After calculating the bound-state spectra we characterized all states found. Similarly, we have calculated the bound-state spectrum and wave functions in the instant-form formalism. We compare the spectra found in both forms of dynamics in the ladder approximation and show that in both forms of dynamics the O(4) symmetry is broken.Comment: 22 pages Latex, 7 figures, style file amssymb use

    Variability and nature of the binary in the Red Rectangle Nebula

    We present new observations of the central binary inside the Red Rectangle nebula. The detection of zinc in the optical spectrum confirms that the peculiar photospheric abundances are due to accretion of circumstellar gas. Grey brightness variations with the orbital period are observed. They are interpreted as being due to the variation of the scattering angle with orbital phase. The small orbital separation of the system is not compatible with previous normal evolution of the primary on the AGB. We point out the similarity of the orbital history of this and other similar systems with those of some close Barium stars and suggest that the nonzero eccentricity of the orbit is the result of tidal interaction with the circumbinary disk.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, A&A Letters accepte

    The canonical structure of Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics on the Null-Plane

    In this work we will develop the canonical structure of Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics on the null-plane. This theory has second-order derivatives in the Lagrangian function and requires a closer study for the definition of the momenta and canonical Hamiltonian of the system. On the null-plane the field equations also demand a different analysis of the initial-boundary value problem and proper conditions must be chosen on the null-planes. We will show that the constraint structure, based on Dirac formalism, presents a set of second-class constraints, which are exclusive of the analysis on the null-plane, and an expected set of first-class constraints that are generators of a U(1) group of gauge transformations. An inspection on the field equations will lead us to the generalized radiation gauge on the null-plane, and Dirac Brackets will be introduced considering the problem of uniqueness of these brackets under the chosen initial-boundary condition of the theory

    Infrared High-Resolution Spectroscopy of Post-AGB Circumstellar Disks. I. HR 4049 - The Winnowing Flow Observed?

    High-resolution infrared spectroscopy in the 2.3-4.6 micron region is reported for the peculiar A supergiant, single-lined spectroscopic binary HR 4049. Lines from the CO fundamental and first overtone, OH fundamental, and several H2O vibration-rotation transitions have been observed in the near-infrared spectrum. The spectrum of HR 4049 appears principally in emission through the 3 and 4.6 micron region and in absorption in the 2 micron region. The 4.6 micron spectrum shows a rich 'forest' of emission lines. All the spectral lines observed in the 2.3-4.6 micron spectrum are shown to be circumbinary in origin. The presence of OH and H2O lines confirm the oxygen-rich nature of the circumbinary gas which is in contrast to the previously detected carbon-rich material. The emission and absorption line profiles show that the circumbinary gas is located in a thin, rotating layer near the dust disk. The properties of the dust and gas circumbinary disk and the spectroscopic orbit yield masses for the individual stars, M_AI~0.58 Msolar and M_MV~0.34 Msolar. Gas in the disk also has an outward flow with a velocity of \gtrsim 1 km/s. The severe depletion of refractory elements but near-solar abundances of volatile elements observed in HR 4049 results from abundance winnowing. The separation of the volatiles from the grains in the disk and the subsequent accretion by the star are discussed.     Long-range potential fluctuations and 1/f noise in hydrogenated amorphous silicon

    We present a microscopic theory of the low-frequency voltage noise (known as "1/f" noise) in micrometer-thick films of hydrogenated amorphous silicon. This theory traces the noise back to the long-range fluctuations of the Coulomb potential produced by deep defects, thereby predicting the absolute noise intensity as a function of the distribution of defect activation energies. The predictions of this theory are in very good agreement with our own experiments in terms of both the absolute intensity and the temperature dependence of the noise spectra.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, several new parts and one new figure are added, but no conceptual revision

    We have used different methods to obtain the bound states of a Hamiltonian of a relativistic two scalar particle system in a local potential. The potentials we are interested in are binding and confining potentials, that are associated with particle exchange. The issues we concentrate on when comparing the different methods are ease of numerical implementation, accuracy and stability. To check our codes we have made use of several potentials for which the bound states are known in the nonrelativistic situation. Finally we calculate the bound states for the Yukawa potential in the relativistic situation and look at the collapse of the wave functions in this situation

    Nambu monopoles in lattice Electroweak theory

    We considered the lattice electroweak theory at realistic values of α\alpha and θW\theta_W and for large values of the Higgs mass. We investigated numerically the properties of topological objects that are identified with quantum Nambu monopoles. We have found that the action density near the Nambu monopole worldlines exceeds the density averaged over the lattice in the physical region of the phase diagram. Moreover, their percolation probability is found to be an order parameter for the transition between the symmetric and the broken phases. Therefore, these monopoles indeed appear as real physical objects. However, we have found that their density on the lattice increases with increasing ultraviolet cutoff. Thus we conclude, that the conventional lattice electroweak theory is not able to predict the density of Nambu monopoles. This means that the description of Nambu monopole physics based on the lattice Weinberg - Salam model with finite ultraviolet cutoff is incomplete. We expect that the correct description may be obtained only within the lattice theory that involves the description of TeV - scale physics.Comment: LATE

    Bias correction in multiple-systems estimation

    If part of a population is hidden but two or more sources are available that each cover parts of this population, dual- or multiple-system(s) estimation can be applied to estimate this population. For this it is common to use the log-linear model, estimated with maximum likelihood. These maximum likelihood estimates are based on a non-linear model and therefore suffer from finite-sample bias, which can be substantial in case of small samples or a small population size. This problem was recognised by Chapman, who derived an estimator with good small sample properties in case of two available sources. However, he did not derive an estimator for more than two sources. We propose an estimator that is an extension of Chapman's estimator to three or more sources and compare this estimator with other bias-reduced estimators in a simulation study. The proposed estimator performs well, and much better than the other estimators. A real data example on homelessness in the Netherlands shows that our proposed model can make a substantial difference
