    Bridging Teacher Candidates, School Communities, and the World During a Pandemic

    The Covid-19 pandemic caused distance that separated the teacher from the learner as schools and higher education moved to virtual and flexible learning communities. Likewise, at the same time racial tensions were growing further increasing the distance and divide across the country. This positions teacher educators with the responsibility to bridge this distance. The challenges of preparing educators for activism in a post-Covid educational context that considers cultural literacy, ethical leadership, and community engagement is explored with three narratives. These narratives provide the opportunity to think with and through our commitments in early childhood and elementary teacher education. Collectively, these narratives use the conditions of learning and teaching in a pandemic to consider educational challenges of the past and the things we must do to create a more equitable and just future.     Effects of pro-inflamatory cytokines on polarized rat parotid Par-C10 monolayers [abstract]

    Abstract only availableSjögren's syndrome (SS), an autoimmune disorder, is distinguished by inflammation and salivary gland cell death, leading to xerostomia (dry mouth). The G protein-coupled P2Y2 receptor (P2Y2R) is up-regulated in response to damage or stress in salivary epithelium. Pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with SS can be produced by infiltrating lymphocytes or salivary epithelium. Correlations have been found between lymphocytic infiltration and increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-Éø (TNFα) and interferon-γ (IFNγ) and decreased function of exocrine glands in SS. Recent data has shown that P2Y2R activation enhances the activity of metalloproteases that release TNFα. OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of cytokines on polarized salivary epithelium. METHODS: Polarized rat parotid (Par-C10) monolayers were used to perform these studies. Cytokines released by UTP-induced P2Y2R activation were identified by ELISA. To evaluate the role of cytokines associated with SS on epithelial integrity, epithelial resistance was determined and correlated with the expression and distribution of tight junction (TJ) proteins by immunofluorescence and Western analysis, respectively. RESULTS: Activation of P2Y2Rs in Par-C10 monolayers induced the release of TNFα. The cytokines TNFα and IFNγ, but not IL-6 or IL1β, decreased the resistance of Par-C10 cells. However, the expression/distribution of the TJ protein ZO-1 was unaffected. CONCLUSIONS: The data support a hypothesis that P2Y2R expression and activation in salivary gland cells contribute to epithelial dysfunction in SS by generating pro-inflammatory cytokines that regulate ion transport and epithelial integrity in salivary glands. Future studies will determine the role of cytokines on the expression and distribution of other TJ molecules including occludin, claudins and junctional adhesion molecules. These studies may lead to better therapeutic strategies for minimizing autoimmune-associated dysfunction of salivary gland that contributes to xerostomia in SS patient.Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Opportunity Progra

    Improvisation for Agricultural Communicators: Investigating the Effect of Paired Role-Play Discussions On Students’ Empathy Development Using a Quasi-Experiment

    Empathy is integral to effective civil discourse because it enables people to understand others’ perspectives (cognitive) and feel concern toward others’ feelings (affective). Although no studies have empirically investigated agricultural communications students’ empathy development, scholars in other disciplines have identified improvisational role-play exercises as effective means to develop students’ empathy skills. Therefore, we sought to determine how paired role-play discussions affected agricultural communications students’ empathy development when compared to class-wide discussions during the course of one semester using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group research design. The pretest-posttest survey instrument included Reniers et al.’s (2011) Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy. Using Kolb’s (1981) experiential learning cycle as a guide, we developed study materials (i.e., lectures, case studies, readings, discussion exercises) focused on relevant skills needed to meet industry demands (i.e., brand assimilation, consumer engagement, public relations, content marketing) and implemented the materials during four class periods. We only facilitated active experimentation through role-play with students in the treatment group. After analyzing the data from 53 usable pretest-posttest responses using a mixed design repeated measures ANOVA, we found that paired role-play discussions and class-wide discussions, both focused on recognizing and affirming opposing perspectives, statistically significantly improved students’ cognitive empathy and total empathy, but not affective empathy. Therefore, we recommend instructors facilitate the type of discussion that would suit their teaching style, classroom dynamic, and students’ learning style best. If an improvement in affective empathy is also desired, then adapting the materials to include a focus on emotion contagion is necessary

    Phase separation of a multiple occupancy lattice gas

    A binary lattice gas model that allows for multiple occupancy of lattice sites, inspired by recent coarse-grained descriptions of solutions of interacting polymers, is investigated by combining the steepest descent approximation with an exploration of the multidimensional energy landscape, and by Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. The one-component version of the model, involving on site and nearest neighbour interactions, is shown to exhibit microphase separation into two sub-lattices with different mean occupation numbers. The symmetric two-component version of the multiple occupancy lattice gas is shown to exhibit a demixing transition into two phases above a critical mean occupation number.Comment: submitted to Journal of Physics

    P2Y2 nucleotide receptors mediate inflammatory responses in mouse salivary gland cells

    Abstract only availableSjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of salivary and lacrimal glands leading to xerostomia (dry mouth) and xerophthalmia (dry eyes). Although the mechanisms involved have not been adequately elucidated, the diminished function of exocrine glands in SS is often associated with lymphocytic infiltration of the tissue. Aberrant expression of specific adhesion molecules such as vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intracellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is also observed in salivary gland with SS, which enable salivary epithelium to interact directly with infiltrating lymphocytes. P2Y2 nucleotide receptor (P2Y2R) is G protein-couple receptor that is activated by extracellular ATP and UTP. P2Y2R expression and activity is up-regulated in response to damage or stress in a variety of tissues, including submandibular glands (SMGs), where it mediates a complex set of cellular responses to injury of disease. Additionally, P2Y2R activation up-regulates VCAM-1 expression in dispersed rat SMG cell culture and human submandibular gland (HSG) cells. Our objective is to investigate weather P2Y2R up-regulation correlates with increased expression of adhesion molecules in SMGs from a mouse model for SS (C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2) as compared with normal mouse strain (C57BL/6). P2Y2R expression was measured by RT-PCR and adhesion molecules expression was determined by Western blot analysis. Salivary flow was preformed by cannulation of individual glands. We could see that P2Y2R expression and ICAM-1 expression were both up-regulated in the SMGs from a mouse model for SS as compared with normal mouse strain. And salivary flow was decreased in salivary glands from a mouse model for SS. These results suggest that P2Y2R mediate inflammatory responses related to secretory dysfunction in the mouse model for SS. Our ultimate goal would be to translate all this information to the human salivary gland in order to understand SS and to develop new therapies for salivary dysfunction in SS.Gyeongsang National Universit

    On-farm food loss in northern and central California: Results of field survey measurementsAuthor links open overlay panel

    Prevailing estimates of food loss at the farm level are sparse and often reliant upon grower surveys. A more comprehensive review of food loss at the farm level using field surveys is required to gain an adequate understanding of the depth of this issue. This paper details the results of 123 in-field surveys and 18 in-depth interviews of 20 different, hand-harvested field crops performed largely on midsize to large conventional farms in northern and central California. We also provide estimates of the percentage of fields that go unharvested, commonly known as walk-by fields. The results show that food loss is highly variable and largely dependent upon the crop, variety, market price, labor costs, grower practices, buyer specifications, and environmental conditions. On average, we found 11,299 kg/ha of food loss at the farm level, which equates to 31.3% of the marketed yield. When walk-by losses are included, this figure rises to 33.7%. Our paper also demonstrates that grower estimates are typically very unreliable for estimating on-farm food losses. Actual, measured edible food loss exceeded growers’ estimates by a median value of 157%. Strategies to utilize this lost produce could play a significant role in reducing the impact of agriculture on the environment and providing food for the rapidly growing population

    Noise Dressing of Financial Correlation Matrices

    We show that results from the theory of random matrices are potentially of great interest to understand the statistical structure of the empirical correlation matrices appearing in the study of price fluctuations. The central result of the present study is the remarkable agreement between the theoretical prediction (based on the assumption that the correlation matrix is random) and empirical data concerning the density of eigenvalues associated to the time series of the different stocks of the S&P500 (or other major markets).     Pre-transplant CDKN2A expression in kidney biopsies predicts renal function and is a future component of donor scoring criteria

    CDKN2A is a proven and validated biomarker of ageing which acts as an off switch for cell proliferation. We have demonstrated previously that CDKN2A is the most robust and the strongest pre-transplant predictor of post- transplant serum creatinine when compared to “Gold Standard” clinical factors, such as cold ischaemic time and donor chronological age. This report shows that CDKN2A is better than telomere length, the most celebrated biomarker of ageing, as a predictor of post-transplant renal function. It also shows that CDKN2A is as strong a determinant of post-transplant organ function when compared to extended criteria (ECD) kidneys. A multivariate analysis model was able to predict up to 27.1% of eGFR at one year post-transplant (p = 0.008). Significantly, CDKN2A was also able to strongly predict delayed graft function. A pre-transplant donor risk classification system based on CDKN2A and ECD criteria is shown to be feasible and commendable for implementation in the near future
