    Get PDF
There is a growing interest in low carbon tourism and sustainable forms of tourism development in destinations in light of climate change, high resource dependency and sustainability concerns. To address these concerns, rail trails have gained increased attention from city planners and environmental advocates as viable alternatives for creating a more sustainable tourism future in an urban city. However, studies focusing on rail trail experiences involving the application of a mobile-driven low carbon trail has been sparse. This paper explores the feasibility of developing an environmentally friendly, low carbon rail trail in urbanized Singapore. It presents a conceptual framework that outlines key attributes necessary for the successful development of low carbon mobile-driven rail trails. The results of the research support the idea of developing rail trail tourism in Singapore to augment existing tourism resource. Understanding the benefits, demand and requirements associated with rail trail development provides evidence for funding support and stakeholder commitment

    Get PDF
Food-related activities are a central feature in Singapore's social and cultural landscape. A destination's culinary heritage can be a key cultural resource and attraction in tourism, contributing to its unique character, local identity and sense of place. Culinary tourism and food trails offer tourists the opportunity to get a taste of local heritage, culture, and vibrant flavors of life in local neighborhoods through eating and touring. This exploratory study investigates the application of a mobile-driven street food trail within the context of cultural and heritage tourism. Specifically, it explores research themes within the domains of (1) culinary tourism and food trails as tourism attractions, and (2) mobile-driven applications for culinary tourism. A street food trail mobile app developed for a Singaporean neighborhood is utilized in the study

    Get PDF
The flash mob phenomenon while capturing public interests and trending globally on social media, has not been comprehensively investigated conceptually. While this contemporary topic has been examined by authors in a small number of disciplines, its investigation and conceptualization within event studies has been limited. This study explores the phenomenon of flash mobs from an experiential and psychological perspective. Specifically, it investigates the dimensions of personal and social experiences and meanings within the context of flash mobs as unplanned and spontaneous events from an Asian perspective. Data for this study was gathered using the specific example of a flash mob created and performed by a group of 45 students at a mall in Singapore, themed around the Lunar New Year festivities. Qualitative interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, observation and post-activity focus group were employed to collect narratives from participants (flash mobbers) and audience in this exploratory study

Students' mental prototypes for functions and graphs

    Get PDF
This research study investigates the concept of function developed by students studying English A-level mathematics. It shows that, while students may be able to use functions in their practical mathematics, their grasp of the theoretical nature of the function concept may be tenuous and inconsistent. The hypothesis is that students develop prototypes for the function concept in much the same way as they develop prototypes for concepts in everyday life. The definition of the function concept, though given in the curriculum, is not stressed and proves to be inoperative, with their understanding of the concept reliant on properties of familiar prototype examples: those having regular shaped graphs, such as x2 or sin*, those often encountered (possibly erroneously), such as a circle, those in which y is defined as an explicit formula in x, and so on. Investigations reveal significant misconceptions. For example, threequarters of a sample of students starting a university mathematics course considered that a constant function was not a function in either its graphical or algebraic forms, and threequarters thought that a circle is a function. This reveals a wide gulf between the concepts as perceived to be taught and as actually learned by the students

Compact tapered slot antennas for UWB microwave imaging applications

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design of compact Tapered Slot Antennas (TSAs) for application in an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) microwave imaging system. In the initial step, a conventional size-reduced TSA with an exponential taper for 3.1-10.6 GHz band is designed. From the radiation pattern analysis, it is found that this antenna exhibits poor directivity in the lower part of UWB. To overcome this shortfall, two modifications are investigated. One includes corrugations and the other one elliptical cuts on sides of the initial TSA. It is shown that the modified TSAs feature improved directivity while their UWB impedance characteristics are similar to the original TSA. The TSA with corrugations exhibits an almost constant directive radiation pattern across UWB. However, its gain oscillates with frequency leading to a pulse distortion. Therefore the size-reduced TSA with elliptical cuts in conducting sides looks to be the most attractive choice with respect to both directive properties and distortionless pulse transmission

Introduction: Hypertension is a major problem that often happen in Indonesia. Hypertension can cause many complications. In Indonesia almost patients with hypertension got farmacologic therapy, but there is no difference. Banana smoothie is one of nonfarmacologic therapy that can be used to lower blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of banana smoothie on regulation in patients with primary hypertension. Method: This study used quasy experimental design. The population in this study were patients with primary hypertension in Kedungturi village Taman Sidoarjo. The sampling technique used nonprobability sampling type of purposive sampling. The total number of sample were 16 respondents who were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result:The Result of paired t-test at the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in experiment group showed p value = 0.000. Independent t test between experiment group post-test and control group post-test showed p value = 0.000 for systolic blood pressure and p value = 0.002 for diastolic blood pressure. This result showed that there was a difference value of pretest and post-test systolic and diastolic blood pressure. With the result of independen t-test we know that there is a difference value between exsperiment and control blood pressure. Discussion: This study explain that there was significant effect of banana smoothie to regulate blood pressure in patients with primary hypertention. Banana smoothie can regulate the blood pressure because of high kalium substance. The function of kalium is to reduce the effect of natrium so the blood pressure can down. It can be conclude that banana smoothie can regulate the blood pressure in patients with primary hypertention. In further day patients with hypertension can choose banana smoothie to regulate their blood pressure

Garcinia species are well-known for their unique properties of having natural secondary metabolite compounds called xanthone as well as their ethnomedicinal values such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The study was conducted to investigate the antiproliferative activity of peel, flesh and seed extracts of G. dulcis, G. parvifolia, G. nitida, G. mangostana var. mangosta and G. cambogia collected from Malaysian Borneo (Sabah) against estrogen receptor-positive human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cells. The antiproliferative activity was assessed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed that G. dulcis seed induced strongest antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 cancer cell line with the IC50 value of 2.5±0.0 μg/ml, followed by G. dulcis flesh, G. mangostana var. mangostana peel and G. dulcis peel with IC50 values of 9.33 ± 3.21, 11.17 ± 1.04 and 17.67 ± 2.08 μg/ml, respectively. Meanwhile, the IC50 value for G. cambogia peel was 56.67 ± 10.5 μg/ml. No IC50 value was detected in all parts of G. parvifolia and G. nitida at concentration tested (<100 μg/ml). Overall, this study clearly showed that the whole fruit of G. dulcis displayed potent cytotoxic effect by inducing antiproliferative activity at low concentration. Further studies are needed in the future to develop this fruit as pharmaceutical and nutraceutical product for the treatment and prevention against cancer

Novel image reconstruction algorithm for a UWB cylindrical microwave imaging system

    Get PDF
A theoretical and experimental study of a novel image reconstruction algorithm for an Ultra Wide band (UWB) Microwave Imaging System aiming at detecting and locating small targets in a homogenous circular cylindrical dielectric body is presented. The system uses a double circular scan in which the second scan is achieved after rotating by a small angle the antenna sub-system or the imaged body. The obtained two sets of data serve the purpose of subtracting the background that masks the target. Assuming that the target is asymmetric with respect to the axis of rotation, the difference data includes the original target and its negative "ghost". In order to eliminate the "ghost" only the positive valued difference data is extracted. This data is scaled and mapped to show the original target location. The validity of the proposed image reconstruction algorithm is demonstrated in an example of a cylindrical plastic container filled with a vegetable oil and small cylindrical targets. © 2010 IEEE
