Performance Analysis of Traffic and Mobility Models on Mobile and Vehicular Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

    Get PDF
Advances in wireless communication technology and the proliferation of mobile devices enable the capa- bilities of communicating with each other even in areas with no pre-existing communication infrastructure. Traffic and mobility models play an important role in evaluating the performance of these communication networks. Despite criticism and assumption from various researches on Transmission Control Protocols (TCP), weaknesses on Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET), and Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). A simulation was carried out to evaluate the performance of Constant Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate and Transmission Control Protocol on MANET and VANET using DSR routing protocol. CBR, VBR, and TCP have different manufacturer operation mechanisms and these differences lead to significant performance of CBR and VBR over TCP with better throughput and less average maximal end-to-end delay. DSR was able to respond to link failure at low mobility which led to TCP’s performance in packets delivery

The Potential of Hellenic-Australian Diaspora Entrepreneurial Networks

In Australia’s economic landscape, a key dimension of trade activity can be found in the important link between cultural diversity and international business. For example, new migrants are likely to have strong links to business communities back home. Moreover, there are no language barriers, nor any cultural adjustments to make. This provides the context for exploring the role of ethnic business communities in Australia in enhancing international business activity especially with member countries of the European Union (EU), which as a single entity remains Australia’s largest economic partner. However, despite the importance of the EU to Australia as an economic partner, English-speaking nations (e.g., Britain) dominate Australia’s exporter list. In this spirit, we examine some of the features of diaspora/expatriate communities within Australia and Greece and consider strategies that can help enhance the role of Greek-Australian diaspora entrepreneurial networks and expand Australia’s economic engagement with the enlarged EU

Successful outcome after spontaneous first trimester intra-amniotic haematoma and early preterm premature rupture of membranes

    Get PDF
A spontaneous intra-amniotic haematoma is a rare cause of preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) but can have significant fetal and maternal consequences. It has previously been reported to occur in the second and third trimesters but not in an earlier gestation. We present a case that presented acutely in the first trimester of pregnancy, which leads to early PPROM at 15 weeks and spontaneous preterm delivery at 28 weeks of gestation. There were no maternal complications during the pregnancy

The role of social media companies in the regulation of online hate

    Get PDF
This article is about online hate speech propagated via platforms operated by social media companies (SMCs). It examines the options open to states in forcing SMCs to take responsibility for the hateful content that appears on their sites.  It examines the technological and legal context for imposing legal obligations on SMCs, and analyses initiatives in Germany, the UK, the EU and elsewhere.  It argues that whilst SMCs can play a role in controlling online hate speech, there are limitations to what they can achieve

Hydrodynamic fluctuations in the presence of one parameter Mittag-Leffler friction

The effects of hydrodynamic fluctuations on the subdiffusive motion of a particle subject to one parameter Mittag-Leffler friction are examined by means of the fractional Langevin equation. The particle experiences an overall additive colored noise formed by, on the one hand, the hydrodynamic back flow effects and, on the other hand, an additional contribution predicted by fluctuation dissipation relation. Particle motion may or may not be subject to a restoring force. All possible combinations of forces exerted on the test particle are being studied, and for each of them the generalized response function in terms of multinomial Mittag-Leffler functions is provided. Mean square displacement, normalized velocity and position auto-correlation functions are furnished as special cases of the generalized response function, and their short and long time limits are analytically given. In addition, for the same measures analytical expressions valid for time windows much broader than the usual asymptotic limit are provided, and can be used to fit real life data. We demonstrate that normalized velocity and position auto-correlation functions are the main sources providing information on the effect of hydrodynamic fluctuations on particle motion. Actually, they oppose to friction and to restoring force, and smooth out the anti-persistent character of the motion

Is multilingualism linked to a higher tolerance of ambiguity?

    Get PDF
The present study investigates the link between multilingualism and the personality trait Tolerance of Ambiguity (TA) among 2158 mono-, bi- and multilinguals. Monolinguals and bilinguals scored significantly lower on TA compared to multilinguals. A high level of global proficiency of various languages was linked to higher TA scores. A stay abroad of more than three months was also linked to higher TA although the effect levelled off after one year. Growing up in a multilingual family had no effect on TA. These findings show that a high level of multilingualism makes individuals more at ease in dealing with ambiguity, but we acknowledge that a higher level of TA can also strengthen an individual’s inclination to become multilingual

Computational power conservation technique using mobility adaptation method in MANET

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new technique is proposed for conserving power in mobile ad hoc wireless network. The technique is based on the existing on-demand ad hoc routing protocols with the addition of power model. The unique feature of the technique is that mobile nodes will be able to evaluate their power status to decide if they are fit for packet forwarding and reception. This is illustrated using computational approach supported by computer simulations over mobile ad hoc wireless network containing 18 mobile nodes. The proposed technique is incorporated into the Ad Hoc On demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocols. The results showed that using power saving technique reduces power consumption to more than 15% rate at which mobile nodes achieved with no much delay in the network as compared to the conventional network configured with AODV and DSR routing protocols

Daughter Coloured Noises: The Legacy of Their Mother White Noises Drawn from Different Probability Distributions

    Get PDF
White noise is fundamentally linked to many processes; it has a flat power spectral density and a delta-correlated autocorrelation. Operators acting on white noise can result in coloured noise, whether they operate in the time domain, like fractional calculus, or in the frequency domain, like spectral processing. We investigate whether any of the white noise properties remain in the coloured noises produced by the action of an operator. For a coloured noise, which drives a physical system, we provide evidence to pinpoint the mother process from which it came. We demonstrate the existence of two indices, that is, kurtosis and codifference, whose values can categorise coloured noises according to their mother process. Four different mother processes are used in this study: Gaussian, Laplace, Cauchy, and Uniform white noise distributions. The mother process determines the kurtosis value of the coloured noises that are produced. It maintains its value for Gaussian, never converges for Cauchy, and takes values for Laplace and Uniform that are within a range of its white noise value. In addition, the codifference function maintains its value for zero lag-time essentially constant around the value of the corresponding white noise
