    Interface driven magnetoelectric effects in granular CrO2

    Antiferromagnetic and magnetoelectric Cr2O3-surfaces strongly affect the electronic properties in half metallic CrO2. We show the presence of a Cr2O3 surface layer on CrO3 grains by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The effect of these surface layers is demonstrated by measurements of the temperature variation of the magnetoelectric susceptibility. A major observation is a sign change at about 100 K followed by a monotonic rise as a function of temperature. These electric field induced moments in CrO3 are correlated with the magnetoelectric susceptibility of pure Cr2O3. This study indicates that it is important to take into account the magnetoelectric character of thin surface layers of Cr2O3 in granular CrO2 for better understanding the transport mechanism in this system.     In the present scenario, smart technology is being applied to every field, and education is just another field which requires it. Smart cum Digital classroom introduces power consumption and time saving technology to the fold and also is ecofriendly as well. This project presents the design and implementation of an intelligent automated system for conserving electrical energy using image processing, which can be used in large organizations like a University or an office. The proposed system works on automation, so that the electrical appliances can be automatically controlled and monitored without any human intervention. It uses the available infrastructure in a classroom which includes surveillance camera and Ethernet connectivity so as to minimize the cost criteria. . The proposed outcome of the project aims at multiple benefits, including saving on electricity bills of the University or any other organization it is deployed in, eliminating human involvement and manpower which is often required to manually toggle the lights and electrical device on/off, and also most importantly, conserve precious natural resources by reducing electrical energy consumption. This project also works as a proxy eliminator and acknowledge the staff members as well as the students that which classroom is free

    The conditions for increased production of thermostable a-amylase from Bacillus caldolyticus DSM 405 were investigated. Preliminary experiments in batch shake flasks led to an optimized initial cultivation medium. Shake flask experiments in extended-batch and in fed-batch mode of operation indicated that the a-amylase production was enhanced by continuous feeding of starch. The activity of the a-amylase with optimized initial medium in batch-operated shake flasks was 5.7 U mL–1 compared to 15.4U mL–1 in the extended-batch culture and 21 U mL–1 in fed-batch culture. The improvements were achieved by avoiding any excess of starch in medium that led to accumulation of glucose followed by acetate formation. Adding casitone as the second component of the feeding solution in an aerated and agitated fed-batch bioreactor (3-liter working volume) led to an increased -amylase activity of up to 163.7 U mL.–1 All phases of cultivation were analyzed using 2D-gel electrophoresis in combination with nano LC-ESI-MS/MS for identification of altered proteins. Pyruvate kinase, 6-phosphofructokinase, GltC, anti-sigma F factor, glycogen synthase and several important variable proteins were detected. With help of these results, potential improvements of a two-component feeding strategy are discussed

    Phase separation and the effect of quenched disorder in Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3

    The nature of phase separation in Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3 has been probed by linear as well as nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities and resistivity measurements across the 2nd order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition (TCT_C) and 1st order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition (TNT_N). We found that the ferromagnetic (metallic) clusters, which form with the onset of long-range order in the system at TCT_C, continuously decrease their size with the decrease in temperature and coexist with non-ferromagnetic (insulating) clusters. These non-ferromagnetic clusters are identified to be antiferromagnetic. Significantly, it is shown that they do not arise because of the superheating effect of the lower temperature 1st order transition. Thus reveals unique phase coexistence in a manganite around half-doping encompassing two long-range order transitions. Both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters form at TCT_C and persist much below TNT_N. Substitution of quenched disorder (Ga) at Mn-site promotes antiferromagnetism at the cost of ferromagnetism without adding any magnetic interaction or introducing any significant lattice distortion. Moreover, increase in disorder decreases the ferromagnetic cluster size and with 7.5% Ga substitution clusters size reduces to the single domain limit. Yet, all the samples show significant short-range ferromagnetic interaction much above TCT_C. Resistivity measurements also reveal the novel phase coexistence identified from the magnetic measurements. It is significant that, increase in disorder up to 7.5% increases the resistivity of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase by about four orders

    Morphometric analysis of Dactylorhiza hatagirea (D. Don), a critically endangered orchid in cold desert Ladakh region of India

    The morphometric study was conducted during 2009 to 2010. About 28 morphological characters were measured under 13 natural populations of Dactylorhiza hatagirea. Geographic variation in morphology reflects phenotypic responses to environmental gradients and evolutionary history of populations and species. At points, beside its broad geographic range (Nubra, Suru and Indus valley) characterization of Dactylorhiza phenotype is normally accomplished by use of morphological descriptors, hence as a first step, phenotype collection and its morphometric analysis was assessed. However, plant height, leaf length, lowermost leaf length, length of second leaf from base and mean length from lowest bract to the top of inflorescence are presented to account for the remarkable variation in morphological characters. Tirith population showed more values of this trait while Skurru showed less value. From this, it is concluded that Tirith showed great morphometric variation as compared to other population. Multivariate morphometric techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis were used to determine whether these populations can be reliably morphologically similar or dissimilar. The first two principal components encompass more than 75% variation among population. The results of PCA and MDS analysis were comparable to the cluster analysis, which shows considerable phenotypic variation in morphological and horticultural traits that can be utilized in its genetic improvement. To support this study, further constructive information were provided on the status of the populations of D. hatagirea which may increase the conservation value of this site and resolve the suitable areas with taxonomic and nomenclatural controversies.Keywords: Morphological characters, principal component analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), plant height, leaf length, leaf widt

    Prevalence of psychiatric co morbidities in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in north Indian population cohort

    Background: Psychiatric co morbidities tend to occur quite frequently in patients of chronic respiratory diseases mainly bronchial asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) but still it is highly under diagnosed. Aim and objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of psychiatric co morbidities in asthma and COPD and to correlate them with disease severity according to Global Initiative against Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and Global Initiative against Asthma (GINA) guidelines.Methods: Study was conducted in Department of TB and Chest in association with Department of Psychiatry of Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, a secondary care medical college in north India. A total 204 patients, 68 of bronchial asthma, 68 0f COPD and 68 were controls included in the study. Diagnosis and severity of respiratory diseases was assessed by spirometry. Evaluation of psychiatric co morbidities was done using the MINI international neuropsychiatric interview questionnaire.Results: The frequency of psychiatric co morbidities in COPD patients was significantly higher (32.4%) compared to patients of bronchial asthma (20.6%). The most common co morbidity in both arms was generalized anxiety disorder (17.6% in COPD patients and 10.3% in patients of bronchial asthma.Conclusions: COPD patients have a higher frequency of psychiatric co morbidities compared to bronchial asthma patients and control population. These should be properly screened and treated.
