Shake-induced order in nanosphere systems
Self-assembled patterns obtained from a drying nanosphere suspension are
investigated by computer simulations and simple experiments. Motivated by the
earlier experimental results of Sasaki and Hane and Schope, we confirm that
more ordered triangular lattice structures can be obtained whenever a moderate
intensity random shaking is applied on the drying system. Computer simulations
are realized on an improved version of a recently elaborated
Burridge-Knopoff-type model. Experiments are made following the setup of Sasaki
and Hane, using ultrasonic radiation as source for controlled shaking.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure

Genetic diversity in Brazilian populations of Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) based on mtDNA.
Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), the West Indian fruit fly, is the second most polyphagous species within the genus in Brazil and therefore one of the most economically important pest species. It infests an extensive range of hosts, at least 60 species. Anastrepha obliqua ranges from northern Mexico to southern Brazil also including the Caribbean Islands. Methods: We sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial gene COI to estimate population structure and genetic diversity of A. obliqua geographic collections in Brazil. Results: A total of 153 specimens from the Amazon Forest, Atlantic Rainforest, Cerrado, and Caatinga were analyzed. A total of 20 haplotypes were found. The highest diversity levels were observed in collections from the Amazon Forest. AMOVA and Fst tests showed evidence of genetic structure allowing us to delineate two groups of A. obliqua populations. The Mantel tests were not significant indicating a weak correlation between genetic and geographic distances. Mismatch distributions and Neutrality Tests suggest that the Caatinga, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest populations have experienced a recent population expansion. Conclusion: Populations in the Amazon Forest showed high genetic diversity when compared to the other biomes and the demographic parameters indicated a recent expansion of A. obliqua in Brazil
Foram capturados 183 espécimes de Anastrepha (117 machos e 66 fêmeas), pertencentes a 12 espécies: Anastrepha striata Schiner (65 espécimes), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) (14), Anastrepha coronilli Carrejo & González (13), Anastrepha sodalis Stone (7), Anastrepha anomala Stone (5), Anastrepha hastata Stone (4), Anastrepha distincta Greene (3), Anastrepha isolata Norrbom & Korytkowski (2), Anastrepha hambletoni Lima (1), Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) (1), Anastrepha serpentina (Wiedemann) (1) e Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi (1).
Characterization of Generalized Young Measures Generated by Symmetric Gradients
This work establishes a characterization theorem for (generalized) Young measures generated by symmetric derivatives of functions of bounded deformation (BD) in the spirit of the classical Kinderlehrer\ue2\u80\u93Pedregal theorem. Our result places such Young measures in duality with symmetric-quasiconvex functions with linear growth. The \ue2\u80\u9clocal\ue2\u80\u9d proof strategy combines blow-up arguments with the singular structure theorem in BD (the analogue of Alberti\ue2\u80\u99s rank-one theorem in BV), which was recently proved by the authors. As an application of our characterization theorem we show how an atomic part in a BD-Young measure can be split off in generating sequences
Novel sol–gel preparation of (P2O5)0.4–(CaO)0.25–(Na2O)X–(TiO2)(0.35−X) bioresorbable glasses (X = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15)
Quaternary phosphate-based glasses in the P2O5–CaO–Na2O–TiO2 system with a fixed P2O5 and CaO content of 40 and 25 mol% respectively have been successfully synthesised via sol–gel method and bulk, transparent samples were obtained. The structure, elemental proportion, and thermal properties of stabilised sol–gel glasses have been characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR), titanium K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The XRD results confirmed the amorphous nature for all stabilized sol–gel derived glasses. The EDX result shows the relatively low loss of phosphorus during the sol–gel process and Ti K-edge XANES confirmed titanium in the glass structure is in mainly six-fold coordination environment. The 31P NMR and FTIR results revealed that the glass structure consist of mainly Q1 and Q2 phosphate units and the Ti4+ cation was acting as a cross-linking between phosphate units. In addition DTA results confirmed a decrease in the glass transition and crystallisation temperature with increasing Na2O content. Ion release studies also demonstrated a decrease in degradation rates with increasing TiO2 content therefore supporting the use of these glasses for biomedical applications that require a degree of control over glass degradation. These sol–gel glasses also offer the potential to incorporate proactive molecules for drug delivery application due to the low synthesis temperature employed
