    InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs DHBTs with low turn-on voltage and high current gain

    An InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) is presented. It features the use of a fully strained pseudomorphic GaAsSb (Sb composition: 10.4%) as the base layer and an InGaP layer as the emitter, which both eliminates the misfit dislocations and increases the valence band discontinuity at the InGaP/GaAsSb interface. A current gain of 200 has been obtained from the InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs DHBT, which is the highest value obtained from GaAsSb base GaAs-based HBTs. The turn-on voltage of the device is typically 0.914 V for the 10.4% Sb composition, which is 0.176V tower than that of traditional InGaP/GaAs HBT. The results show that GaAsSb is a suitable base material for reducing the turn-on voltage of GaAs HBTs.published_or_final_versio

    Preparation and analysis of a new bioorganic metallic material

    Biofouling on metal surfaces is one of the main reasons for increased ship drag. Many methods have already been used to reduce or remove it with moderate success. In this study, a synthetic peptide has been utilized to react with 304 stainless steel aiming to generate a bioorganic stainless steel using a facile technique. After the reaction, white matter was found on the surface of the treated stainless steel via SEM, whilst the nontreated stainless steel had none. Elemental analysis confirmed that excessive N existed on the surface of the treated samples using an integrated SEM-EDS instrument, implying the presence of peptides binding on the surface of the bioorganic stainless steel. The FTIR spectra showed amide A and II peaks on the surface of the bioorganic stainless steel suggesting that either the peptides grafted onto the steel surface or the polypeptide composition accumulated on the steel samples. XPS analysis of the treated steel demonstrated that there was nitrogen bonding on the surface and it was a chemical bond via a previously unreported chemical interaction. The treated steel has a markedly increased contact angle (water contact angle of 65.7 ± 4.7° for nontreated steel in comparison to treated, 96.4 ± 2.1°), which supported the observation of the wettability change of the surface, i.e. the decrease of the surface energy value after peptide treatment.     Selection of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains for efficient very high gravity bio-ethanol fermentation processes

    An optimized very high gravity (VHG) glucose medium supplemented with low cost nutrient sources was used to evaluate bio-ethanol production by 11 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. The industrial strains PE-2 and CA1185 exhibited the best overall fermentation performance, producing an ethanol titre of 19.2% (v/v) corresponding to a batch productivity of 2.5 g l-1 h-1, while the best laboratory strain (CEN.PK 113-7D) produced 17.5% (v/v) ethanol with a productivity of 1.7 g l-1 h-1.     Search for K_S K_L in psi'' decays

    K_S K_L from psi'' decays is searched for using the psi'' data collected by BESII at BEPC, the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi''--> K_S K_L) < 2.1\times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The measurement is compared with the prediction of the S- and D-wave mixing model of the charmonia, based on the measurements of the branching fractions of J/psi-->K_S K_L and psi'-->K_S K_L.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    A Novel Splicing Mutation Alters DSPP Transcription and Leads to Dentinogenesis Imperfecta Type II

    Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI) type II is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by a serious disorders in teeth. Mutations of dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) gene were revealed to be the causation of DGI type II (DGI-II). In this study, we identified a novel mutation (NG_011595.1:g.8662T>C, c.135+2T>C) lying in the splice donor site of intron 3 of DSPP gene in a Chinese Han DGI-II pedigree. It was found in all affected subjects but not in unaffected ones or other unrelated healthy controls. The function of the mutant DSPP gene, which was predicted online and subsequently confirmed by in vitro splicing analysis, was the loss of splicing of intron 3, leading to the extended length of DSPP mRNA. For the first time, the functional non-splicing of intron was revealed in a novel DSPP mutation and was considered as the causation of DGI-II. It was also indicated that splicing was of key importance to the function of DSPP and this splice donor site might be a sensitive mutation hot spot. Our findings combined with other reports would facilitate the genetic diagnosis of DGI-II, shed light on its gene therapy and help to finally conquer human diseases

    AB-QTL analysis in winter wheat: II. Genetic analysis of seedling and field resistance against leaf rust in a wheat advanced backcross population

    The present study aimed to localize exotic quantitative trait locus (QTL) alleles for the improvement of leaf rust (P.triticina) resistance in an advanced backcross (AB) population, B22, which is derived from a cross between the winter wheat cultivar Batis (Triticumaestivum) and the synthetic wheat accession Syn022L. The latter was developed from hybridization of T.turgidum ssp. dicoccoides and T.tauschii. Altogether, 250 BC2F3 lines of B22 were assessed for seedling resistance against the leaf rust isolate 77WxR under controlled conditions. In addition, field resistance against leaf rust was evaluated by assessing symptom severity under natural infestation across multiple environments. Simultaneously, population B22 was genotyped with a total of 97 SSR markers, distributed over the wheat A, B and D genomes. The phenotype and genotype data were subjected to QTL analysis by applying a 3-factorial mixed model analysis of variance including the marker genotype as a fixed effect and the environments, the lines and the marker by environment interactions as random effects. The QTL analysis revealed six putative QTLs for seedling resistance and seven for field resistance. For seedling resistance, the effects of exotic QTL alleles improved resistance at all detected loci. The maximum decrease of disease symptoms (−46.3%) was associated with marker locus Xbarc149 on chromosome 1D. For field resistance, two loci had stable main effects across environments and five loci exhibited marker by environment interaction effects. The strongest effects were detected at marker locus Xbarc149 on chromosome 1D, at which the exotic allele decreased seedling symptoms by 46.3% and field symptoms by 43.6%, respectively. Some of the detected QTLs co-localized with known resistance genes, while others appear to be as novel resistance loci. Our findings indicate, that the exotic wheat accession Syn022L may be useful for the improvement of leaf rust resistance in cultivated wheat

    Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay

    The decay channel ψâ€Č→π+π−J/ψ(J/Ïˆâ†’Îłppˉ)\psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) is studied using a sample of 1.06×1081.06\times 10^8 ψâ€Č\psi^\prime events collected by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is observed in the ppˉp\bar{p} invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit with an SS-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of M=1861−13+6(stat)−26+7(syst)MeV/c2M=1861^{+6}_{-13} {\rm (stat)}^{+7}_{-26} {\rm (syst)} {\rm MeV/}c^2 and a narrow width that is Γ<38MeV/c2\Gamma<38 {\rm MeV/}c^2 at the 90% confidence level. These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width values do not match with those of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics
