Serum lipid peroxidation and antioxidant potential levels in hyperemesis gravidarum

    No full text
Hyperemesis gravidarum (HEG) is a severe form of nausea and vomiting with unknown etiology. Recent studies have suggested that there might be an etiologic role for Helicobacter pylori (HP) in HEG. HP is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the gastric mucosa, increases the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and decreases plasma antioxidants such as ascorbic acid. The aim of this study was to investigate plasma ROS activities and antioxidant status, and their relationship with HP infection, in HEG womens. Twenty-five HEG women, 20 gestational age- and gravida-matched healthy pregnant controls, and 15 nonpregnant women were examined for specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) against HP, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) as a measure of lipid peroxidation, and activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CT). Compared with controls, the seropositivity of HP for IgG was significantly higher (P 0.05). The results of the present study suggest that HEG is an oxidative stress condition, as reflected by the increased ROS activity and decreased antioxidant status, regardless of HP infection

Bioaccumulation of Cadmium in Marine Diatom: Thalassiosira allenii Takano

WOS: 000339166300010The present study achieved cadmium bioaccumulation ability using growth kinetics and ICP-OES for Cd measurements in marine diatom Thalassiosira allenii Takano. T. allenii cells were exposed to different cadmium concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg. Cd L-1) for 4 days. T. allenii cells were seen to have bioaccumulation ability both in cells and cellular surfaces. The cadmium uptake of T. allenii species followed a linear trend for most of days for 25 mg L-1Cd. T. allenii removed much of cadmium by taking it into the cells in <= 10 mg. L-1 Cd concentrations in the medium. While the adsorption on the cell surfaces is dominant in cells on the first day, the amount of Cd allowed in the cell has become dominant beginning with the second day. The growth rate decreased with increasing Cd concentration and remained stable at about 0.1-0.2 day(-1). However up to the 5 mg. L-1 Cd concentration, the growth rates are not different from the control and continued for about 0.3-0.4 day(-1). When T. allenii species is used in the bioremediation systems, this limit value does not affect growth of the species.Ege University Scientific Research Projects Funds (BAP) TurkeyEge University [07-SUF-021]We thank Directorate of Kirklareli Ataturk Soil, Water and Agricultural Meteorological Station, especially to Dr. M. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate antepartum, intrapartum and perinatal complications in spontaneous versus in vitro fertilization twins. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of twin pregnancies delivered at the Suleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Isparta Women's and Children's Hospital between 1999 and 2005. Controls were identified from spontaneous multiple pregnancies delivered in the same time period. A total of 52 cases and 104 controls were studied. They were compared with respect to various maternal and neonatal complications. Results: Mean maternal age, the proportion of nulliparaous women, the incidence of premature rupture of membranes, cesarean section, and premature delivery were significantly higher in the study group. The cesarean delivery rate was significantly higher in cases of twins who were conceived by in vitro fertilization (84% vs 67%, p<0.05). The preterm delivery rate was also significantly higher (55% vs 47%, p< 0.05)and no significant difference was present between the groups with respect to the gestational age (34 +/- 4 weeks vs 35 +/- 3 weeks). The number of perinatal deaths, stillbirths, fetal distress, cord prolapse, and neonatal intensive care unit admissions was similar in both groups. Discusssion: When compared with control twins, in vitro fertilization twins are more likely to be delivered by cesarean delivery and to have a higher incidence of preterm birth. This study provides further evidence for a different outcome of in vitro fertilization twin pregnancies in comparison with spontaneously conceived twin pregnancies

Expression of leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) during the window of implantation in copper T380A intrauterine device users

Objective The mechanism of action of intrauterine devices (IUDs) is not wen understood. This investigation was intended to gain further insight into the role of leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) in intrauterine contraception. We evaluated the inmiuriohistochernical distribution patterns of LIF in women wearing a copper T380A IUD. Methods The immunohistochemical distribution patterns of LIF in women who had been using a copper T380A IUD for different periods of time, two months after removal of the IUD, and in normal fertile women were evaluated. Endometrial biopsies were obtained from four groups of patients according to the duration of T Cu380A IUD use (group I: = 5 years, n = 15), after IUD removal (group III, n = 15) and normal fertile women (controls, n = 15) during the window of implantation (WOI). Staining intensity of LIF was evaluated using semi- quantitative IRS-scores. Results The lowest expression of LIF was observed in women using a copper T380A IUD, being statistically significant compared with the control group (p < 0.05). LIT immunostaining remained abnormal two months after IUD removal. Conclusions Copper IUDs can inhibit expression of LIF and they may cause inhibition of the implantation stage, which is crucial for pregnancy

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence, indications, risk factors, and complications of peripartum hysterectomy in a university clinic and a state hospital in the Lakes region of Anatolia. Design: Retrospective clinical study. Setting: This retrospective study was conducted between December 1996 and December 2005 at the Süleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Isparta Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Patients: Twenty-eight patients who underwent emergency peripartum hysterectomy. Main Outcome Measures: Twenty-eight patients with emergency peripartum hysterectomy were evaluated with respect to the demographic characteristics, clinical manifestation, state of parity and type of hysterectomy. RESULTS: In the study period, the incidence of emergency peripartum hysterectomy was 0.8 per 1000 deliveries. The main indications for emergency hysterectomy were uterine atony in 18 cases (64 %), rupture of uterus in 6 cases (21 %) and placenta accreta in 4 cases (14 %). There were 20 (71 %) multiparaous and 8 (28 %) primiparaous women. There were 4 total abdominal hysterectomies and 24 subtotal hysterectomies. The rate of maternal mortality was 4% (1 cases). CONCLUSION: Our incidence of emergent peripartum hysterectomy was low when compared with most of the studies and uterine atony was the most common indication for emergent peripartum hysterectomy
