A new power MEMS component with variable capacitance
Autonomous devices such as wireless sensors and sensor networks need a long battery lifetime in a small volume. Incorporating micro-power generators based on ambient energy increases the lifetime of these systems while reducing the volume. This paper describes a new approach to the conversion of mechanical energy, available in vibrations, to electrical energy. The conversion principle is based on charge transportation between two parallel capacitors. An electret is used to polarize the device. A large-signal model was developed, allowing simulations of the behavior of the generator. A small-signal model was then derived in order to quantify the output power as a function of the design parameters. These models show the possibility of generating up to 40 muW with a device of 10 mm 2. A layout was made based on a standard SOI-technology, available in an MPW. With this design a power of 1 muW at 1020 Hz is expected
Evaluation of the effects of recent nature development measures in the Yser Estuary on ground beetle and spider assemblages
Since 1990, populations of ground beetles and spiders are continuously monitored in the coastal dune and saltmarsh habitats of the Yser Estuary (Nieuwpoort), within the context of a long-term study on invertebrate diversity, population dynamics and ecological and genetic effects of habitat fragmentation. By now, we know in detail the faunal composition of practically all available habitats in the study area. This is an ideal framework to monitor the effects of the nature development activities that started in 2001 in the area. Results of five large sampling campaigns in 2001-2003 (more than 25.000 carabid beetles and spiders, 218 species) show a number of new ground beetle and spider species and assemblages, but warrant that many of these could be rapidly lost again
Charge characteristics in relation to free iron and organic matter of soils from Bambouto Mountains, Western Cameroon
We have examined the charge characteristics, with special emphasis on the role of free Fe and organic matter, of humid tropical soils from Bambouto Mountains, Western Cameroon. The soils, which are formed from tuff, basalt and trachyte, are dominated by kaolinite and sesquioxides. The mounts of Fe oxides in them increase somewhat with depth. Open 2:1 phyllosilicates are present in trace amounts. The point of zero charge of the variable charge components, pH0, is around 4 in the topsoil (0-20 cm) and around 6 at 100-150 cm depth. In the subsoils, pH0 exceeds soil pH presumably because of large quantities of Fe oxides. Deferration increases both soil pH and pH0, but diminishes the anion exchange capacity. Oxides and oxyhydrates of Fe have positive surface charge, so their removal from the soils would result in overall loss of positive charge. Increases in soil pH would bring about an increase in the cation exchange capacity of the soils. Hence, management practices that reduce soil acidity should reduce loss of essential basic cations via leaching
Wafer-level packaged RF-MEMS switches fabricated in a CMOS fab
Reports on wafer-level packaged RF-MEMS switches fabricated in a commercial CMOS fab. Switch fabrication is based on a metal surface micromachining process. A novel wafer-level packaging scheme is developed, whereby the switches are housed in on-chip sealed cavities using benzocyclobutene (BCB) as the bonding and sealing material. Measurements show that the influence of the wafer-level package on the RF performance can be made very small.\ud

London equation studies of thin-film superconductors with a triangular antidot lattice
We report on a study of vortex pinning in nanoscale antidot defect arrays in
the context of the London Theory. Using a wire network model, we discretize the
array with a fine mesh, thereby providing a detailed treatment of pinning
phenomena. The use of a fine grid has enabled us to examine both circular and
elongated defects, patterned in the form of a rhombus. The latter display
pinning characteristics superior to circular defects constructed with the
similar area. We calculate pinning potentials for defects containing zero and
single quanta, and we obtain a pinning phase diagram for the second matching

Commensurate and Incommensurate Vortex States in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning Arrays
As a function of applied field, we find a rich variety of ordered and
partially-ordered vortex lattice configurations in systems with square or
triangular arrays of pinning sites. We present formulas that predict the
matching fields at which commensurate vortex configurations occur and the
vortex lattice orientation with respect to the pinning lattice. Our results are
in excellent agreement with recent imaging experiments on square pinning arrays

Continuous Melting of a "Partially Pinned" Two-Dimensional Vortex Lattice in a Square Array of Pinning Centers
The structure and equilibrium properties of a two-dimensional system of
superconducting vortices in a periodic pinning potential with square symmetry
are studied numerically. For a range of the strength of the pinning potential,
the low-temperature crystalline state exhibits only one of the two basic
periodicities (in the - and -directions) of the pinning potential. This
``partially pinned'' solid undergoes a continuous melting transition to a
weakly modulated liquid as the temperature is increased. A spin model,
constructed using symmetry arguments, is shown to reproduce the critical

"They just come, pick and go." The Acceptability of Integrated Medication Adherence Clubs for HIV and Non Communicable Disease (NCD) Patients in Kibera, Kenya
Introduction The number of people on antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the long-term management of HIV in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is continuing to increase, along with the prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The need to provide large volumes of HIV patients with ART has led to significant adaptations in how medication is delivered, but access to NCD care remains limited in many contexts. Medication Adherence Clubs (MACs) were established in Kibera, Kenya to address the large numbers of patients requiring chronic HIV and/or NCD care. Stable NCD and HIV patients can now collect their chronic medication every three months through a club, rather than through individual clinic appointments. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a qualitative research study to assess patient and health-care worker perceptions and experiences of MACs in the urban informal settlement of Kibera, Kenya. A total of 106 patients (with HIV and/or other NCDs) and health-care workers were purposively sampled and included in the study. Ten focus groups and 19 in-depth interviews were conducted and 15 sessions of participant observation were carried out at the clinic where the MACs took place. Thematic data analysis was conducted using NVivo software, and coding focussed on people's experiences of MACs, the challenges they faced and their perceptions about models of care for chronic conditions. RESULTS: MACs were considered acceptable to patients and health-care workers because they saved time, prevented unnecessary queues in the clinic and provided people with health education and group support whilst they collected their medication. Some patients and health-care workers felt that MACs reduced stigma for HIV positive patients by treating HIV as any other chronic condition. Staff and patients reported challenges recruiting patients into MACs, including patients not fully understanding the eligibility criteria for the clubs. There were also some practical challenges during the implementation of the clubs, but MACs have shown that it is possible to learn from ART provision and enable stable HIV and NCD patients to collect chronic medication together in a group. CONCLUSIONS: Extending models of care previously only offered to HIV-positive cohorts to NCD patients can help to de-stigmatise HIV, allow for the efficient clinical management of co-morbidities and enable patients to benefit from peer support. Through MACs, we have demonstrated that an integrated approach to providing medication for chronic diseases including HIV can be implemented in resource-poor settings and could thus be rolled out in other similar contexts
