    Optical Analysis of Nasal Endoscopic Images From a Patient With Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread worldwide; a simple diagnostic test is becoming increasingly important. Polymerase chain reaction tests of nasal swab samples are expensive and time-consuming. Detailed observation of the nasal cavity is required. No nasal endoscopic study regarding patients with SARS-CoV-2 has been published. Here, we compared endoscopic images of normal subjects and patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) to images from a patient with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Nasal cavity endoscopic images (of the inferior turbinate) were compared using the hue, saturation, and luminance (HSL) color system of Matrox Design Assistant, version 5.0. The multiple allergen simultaneous test was used to distinguish normal subjects from patients with AR. HSL patterns were compared among images. We enrolled 14 normal subjects and patients with AR and 1 patient with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. The inferior turbinates of normal subjects and patients with AR were smooth and uniform, while those of the patient with SARS-CoV-2 were scratched and stretched. Although additional data are needed, optical analysis of nasal endoscopy images may be useful to screen for SARS-CoV-2 infection. This imaging method is rapid, non-invasive, and inexpensive

    Extraskeletal chondroma of the fallopian tube.

    Extraskeletal chondroma can occur in the hands, feet, head and neck. This tumor usually presents as a small solitary nodule. The histogenesis of the tumor is controversial, but some have suggested a metaplastic origin. Chondroma of the fallopian tube is very rare. There is only one report in English literature. The origin of this tumor can be subcoelomic mesenchyme of the tubal serosa or mesenchyme of the myosalpinx. We describe a case of chondroma arising from the serosal surface of the fallopian tube with a review of literature. A 30-yr-old woman visited hospital due to left adnexal mass. On operating finding, 2 x 3 cm sized nodular mass was noted on the left tubal serosal area. The excised mass showed multilobulated appearance covered with thin fibrous membrane. The cut surface was solid, grayish yellow, and myxoid with a focal gelatinous area. The microscopic finding showed islands and elongated lobules of mature benign cartilage without cytologic atypia

    Identification of DNA methylation changes associated with human gastric cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Epigenetic alteration of gene expression is a common event in human cancer. DNA methylation is a well-known epigenetic process, but verifying the exact nature of epigenetic changes associated with cancer remains difficult.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We profiled the methylome of human gastric cancer tissue at 50-bp resolution using a methylated DNA enrichment technique (methylated CpG island recovery assay) in combination with a genome analyzer and a new normalization algorithm.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We were able to gain a comprehensive view of promoters with various CpG densities, including CpG Islands (CGIs), transcript bodies, and various repeat classes. We found that gastric cancer was associated with hypermethylation of 5' CGIs and the 5'-end of coding exons as well as hypomethylation of repeat elements, such as short interspersed nuclear elements and the composite element SVA. Hypermethylation of 5' CGIs was significantly correlated with downregulation of associated genes, such as those in the <it>HOX </it>and histone gene families. We also discovered long-range epigenetic silencing (LRES) regions in gastric cancer tissue and identified several hypermethylated genes (<it>MDM2</it>, <it>DYRK2</it>, and <it>LYZ</it>) within these regions. The methylation status of CGIs and gene annotation elements in metastatic lymph nodes was intermediate between normal and cancerous tissue, indicating that methylation of specific genes is gradually increased in cancerous tissue.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our findings will provide valuable data for future analysis of CpG methylation patterns, useful markers for the diagnosis of stomach cancer, as well as a new analysis method for clinical epigenomics investigations.</p

    Identification of novel peptides that stimulate human neutrophils

    Neutrophils play a key role in innate immunity, and the identification of new stimuli that stimulate neutrophil activity is a very important issue. In this study, we identified three novel peptides by screening a synthetic hexapeptide combinatorial library. The identified peptides GMMWAI, MMHWAM, and MMHWFM caused an increase in intracellular Ca2+ in a concentration-dependent manner via phospholipase C activity in human neutrophils. The three peptides acted specifically on neutrophils and monocytes and not on other non-leukocytic cells. As a physiological characteristic of the peptides, we observed that the three peptides induced chemotactic migration of neutrophils as well as stimulated superoxide anion production. Studying receptor specificity, we observed that two of the peptides (GMMWAI and MMHWFM) acted on formyl peptide receptor (FPR)1 while the other peptide (MMHWAM) acted on FPR2. Since the three novel peptides were specific agonists for FPR1 or FPR2, they might be useful tools to study FPR1- or FPR2-mediated immune response and signaling

    Plexiform Angiomyxoid Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Stomach: A Case Report

    Plexiform angiomyxoid myofibroblastic tumor (PAMT) is a recently described mesenchymal tumor of the stomach. We report the first case of PAMT in Korea. A 52-yr-old man underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy due to dyspepsia for 2 yr. There was a submucosal mass with small mucosal ulceration in the gastric antrum. The tumor measured 3.5 × 2.3 cm in size and showed multinodular plexiform growth pattern of bland-looking spindle cells separated by an abundant myxoid or fibromyxoid matrix rich in small thin-walled blood vessels. The tumor cells were negative for CD117 (c-KIT), CD34 and S-100 protein, but diffusely positive for smooth muscle actin consistent with predominant myofibroblastic differentiation. The patient is doing well without recurrence or metastasis for 5 months after surgery. Although there have been limited follow-up data, PAMT is regarded as a benign gastric neoplasm with histological and immunohistochemical charateristics distinguished from gastrointestinal stromal tumor and other mesenchymal tumors of the stomach

    Multiple myeloma is an incurable and slow growing plasma cell neoplasm. The introduction of new drugs has increased the number of treatment options. Bortezomib, the first-in-class proteasome inhibitor, has been shown to have a significant antitumor activity in the treatment of relapse/refractory patients with multiple myeloma. Additionally, plasmacytomas have shown significant response to bortezomib. In this case report, we describe a patient who developed disseminated and fulminant extramedullary plasmacytomas during combination chemotherapy treatment with bortezomib within a short period, after having shown clinical improvement
