    Asperity contacts at the nanoscale: comparison of Ru and Au

    We develop and validate an interatomic potential for ruthenium based on the embedded atom method framework with the Finnis/Sinclair representation. We confirm that the new potential yields a stable hcp lattice with reasonable lattice and elastic constants and surface and stacking fault energies. We employ molecular dynamics simulations to bring two surfaces together; one flat and the other with a single asperity. We compare the process of asperity contact formation and breaking in Au and Ru, two materials currently in use in micro electro mechanical system switches. While Au is very ductile at 150 and 300 K, Ru shows considerably less plasticity at 300 and 600 K (approximately the same homologous temperature). In Au, the asperity necks down to a single atom thick bridge at separation. While similar necking occurs in Ru at 600 K, it is much more limited than in Au. On the other hand, at 300 K, Ru breaks by a much more brittle process of fracture/decohesion with limited plastic deformation.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

    A double-helix neutron detector using micron-size B-10 powder

    A double-helix electrode configuration is combined with a 10^{10}B powder coating technique to build large-area (9 in ×\times 36 in) neutron detectors. The neutron detection efficiency for each of the four prototypes is comparable to a single 2-bar 3^3He drift tube of the same length (36 in). One unit has been operational continuously for 18 months and the change of efficiency is less than 1%. An analytic model for pulse heigh spectra is described and the predicted mean film thickness agrees with the experiment to within 30%. Further detector optimization is possible through film texture, power size, moderator box and gas. The estimated production cost per unit is less than 3k US\$ and the technology is thus suitable for deployment in large numbers

    Finite automata for caching in matrix product algorithms

    A diagram is introduced for visualizing matrix product states which makes transparent a connection between matrix product factorizations of states and operators, and complex weighted finite state automata. It is then shown how one can proceed in the opposite direction: writing an automaton that ``generates'' an operator gives one an immediate matrix product factorization of it. Matrix product factorizations have the advantage of reducing the cost of computing expectation values by facilitating caching of intermediate calculations. Thus our connection to complex weighted finite state automata yields insight into what allows for efficient caching in matrix product algorithms.     Measuring dark matter substructure with galaxy-galaxy flexion statistics

    It is of great interest to measure the properties of substructures in dark matter haloes at galactic and cluster scales. Here we suggest a method to constrain substructure properties using the variance of weak gravitational flexion in a galaxy-galaxy lensing context; this is a statistical method, requiring many foreground-background pairs of galaxies. We show the effectiveness of flexion variance in measuring substructures in N-body simulations of dark matter haloes, and present the expected galaxy-galaxy lensing signals. We show the insensitivity of the method to the overall galaxy halo mass, and predict the method's signal-to-noise ratio for a space-based all-sky survey, showing that the presence of substructure down to 109 M⊙ haloes can be reliably detecte

    AbstractA comprehensive farm-level stochastic and dynamic capital budgeting simulation model (AQUASIM) is used to evaluate the economic benefits of incorporating a small-scale trout enterprise with a grain and broiler farm. The simulation results indicate that combining aquaculture production with traditional agriculture increased expected income and reduced risk substantially. The use of external debt capital improved the after-tax net present values and internal rates of return but lowered net cash farm income. This study shows the importance of enterprise diversification in stabilizing variability in expected income

    A Tunable Echelle Imager

    We describe and evaluate a new instrument design called a Tunable Echelle Imager (TEI). In this instrument, the output from an imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer is cross-dispersed by a grism in one direction and dispersed by an echelle grating in the perpendicular direction. This forms a mosaic of different narrow-band images of the same field on a detector. It offers a distinct wavelength multiplex advantage over a traditional imaging Fabry-Perot device.
