    Vertex Reconstruction Using a Single Layer Silicon Detector

    Typical vertex finding algorithms use reconstructed tracks, registered in a multi-layer detector, which directly point to the common point of origin. A detector with a single layer of silicon sensors registers the passage of primary particles only in one place. Nevertheless, the information available from these hits can also be used to estimate the vertex position, when the geometrical properties of silicon sensors and the measured ionization energy losses of the particles are fully exploited. In this paper the algorithm used for this purpose in the PHOBOS experiment is described. The vertex reconstruction performance is studied using simulations and compared with results obtained from real data. The very large acceptance of a single-layered multiplicity detector permits vertex reconstruction for low multiplicity events where other methods, using small acceptance subdetectors, fail because of insufficient number of registered primary tracks.Comment: accepted for publication in Nucl.     An Experimental Investigation of Fluid Flow and Heating in Various Resonance Tube Modes

    Experiments have been performed to study resonance phenomena in tubes excited by underexpanded jet flows. This investigation comprised the following: Study of the various resonance tube modes under a wide range of nozzle pressure, spacing between nozzle and tube mouth, and different tube length; the effects of these modes on the endwall pressure and gas temperature; flow visualization of both jet and tube flows by spark shadowgraph technique; and measurement of wave speed inside the tube by the laser-schlieren techniques. An extensive study of the free-jet flow was undertaken to explain important aspects of various modes of operation of resonance tube flows

    Investigation of spray dispersion and particulate formation in diesel fuel flames

    An experimental study of electrostatical atomized and dispersed diesel fuel jets was conducted at various back pressures to 40 atm. A new electrostatic injection technique was utilized to generate continuous, stable fuel sprays at charge densities of 1.5 to 2.0 C/m3 of fluid at one atm, and about 1.0 C/m3 at 40 atm. Flowrates were varied from 0.5 to 2.5 ml/s and electric potentials to -18 kV. Visual observations showed that significant enhanced dispersion of charged fuel jets occurred at high back pressures compared to aerodynamic breakup and dispersion. The average drop size was about the same as the spray triode orifice diameter, and was between the Kelly theory and the Rayleigh limit. The ignition tests, done only at one atm, indicated stable combustion of the electrostatically dispersed fuel jets

    On the use of projectors for Hamiltonian systems and their relationship with Dirac brackets

    The role of projectors associated with Poisson brackets of constrained Hamiltonian systems is analyzed. Projectors act in two instances in a bracket: in the explicit dependence on the variables and in the computation of the functional derivatives. The role of these projectors is investigated by using Dirac's theory of constrained Hamiltonian systems. Results are illustrated by three examples taken from plasma physics: magnetohydrodynamics, the Vlasov-Maxwell system, and the linear two-species Vlasov system with quasineutrality

    Resilience engineering as a quality improvement method in healthcare

    Current approaches to quality improvement rely on the identification of past problems through incident reporting and audits or the use of Lean principles to eliminate waste, to identify how to improve quality. In contrast, Resilience Engineering (RE) is based on insights from complexity science, and quality results from clinicians’ ability to adapt safely to difficult situations, such as a surge in patient numbers, missing equipment or difficult unforeseen physiological problems. Progress in applying these insights to improve quality has been slow, despite the theoretical developments. In this chapter we describe a study in the Emergency Department of a large hospital in which we used RE principles to identify opportunities for quality improvement interventions. In depth observational fieldwork and interviews with clinicians were used to gather data about the key challenges faced, the misalignments between demand and capacity, adaptations that were required, and the four resilience abilities: responding, monitoring, anticipating and learning. Data were transcribed and used to write extended resilience narratives describing the work system. The narratives were analysed thematically using a combined deductive/inductive approach. A structured process was then used to identify potential interventions to improve quality. We describe one intervention to improve monitoring of patient flow and organisational learning about patient flow interventions. The approach we describe is challenging and requires close collaboration with clinicians to ensure accurate results. We found that using RE principles to improve quality is feasible and results in a focus on strengthening processes and supporting the challenges that clinicians face in their daily work

    Structural and magnetic dynamics of a laser induced phase transition in FeRh

    We use time-resolved x-ray diffraction and magnetic optical Kerr effect to study the laser induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in FeRh. The structural response is given by the nucleation of independent ferromagnetic domains (\tau_1 ~ 30ps). This is significantly faster than the magnetic response (\tau_2 ~ 60ps) given by the subsequent domain realignment. X-ray diffraction shows that the two phases co-exist on short time-scales and that the phase transition is limited by the speed of sound.     Applications of aerospace technology to petroleum extraction and reservoir engineering

    Through contacts with the petroleum industry, the petroleum service industry, universities and government agencies, important petroleum extraction problems were identified. For each problem, areas of aerospace technology that might aid in its solution were also identified, where possible. Some of the problems were selected for further consideration. Work on these problems led to the formulation of specific concepts as candidate for development. Each concept is addressed to the solution of specific extraction problems and makes use of specific areas of aerospace technology
