This study aims to investigate the effect of leptin on ovaries in female Wistar rat during development. Rats were divided into two groups: 30 and 60-day-old females. Experimental treated females were administrated                 8 μg/100 g body weight intraperitoneal leptin injections daily for 5 days, while controls received the same volume of saline solution. Leptin treatment resulted in a significant decrease in body weight (150.50 ± 4.02 vs 157.78 ± 3.51 g,               p 0.05). For FSH, the difference between controls and treated females was not significant in both ages (p > 0.05). Leptin appears to be involved in the regulation of body weight, folliculogenesis, the ovulatory process and luteogenesis by control of gonadotropic hormones and progesterone at the age of 60 days but not at 30 days, when leptin receptors are probably not expressed yet

A Rare Case of Mesenteric Trauma after a Clandestine Abortion in Morocco

In Morocco abortion is illegal; this is why the termination of pregnancy is performed in unsafe conditions which may lead to uterine perforation, mesenteric trauma, uncontrolled hemorrhage and even death. The small bowel is the most commonly injured due to its pelvic location and mobility. We report a case of 28-year-old nulliparous married female who presented to the emergency department after a failed abortion procedure. We performed haemostatic suture of the uterine lesion then resection of the injured distal bowel, and then a stoma was confected. The patient was discharged after 2 weeks of hospitalisation .Three months later; the stoma reversal surgery was done without complication. This case underlines the need for a regulation of a safe abortion in the world

A review on biogenic green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles by plant biomass and their applications

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade de Vigo/CISUGNanobiotechnology has recently gained prominence as a fundamental branch of modern science and a novel epoch in the field of material researches. Due to a wide range of applications it attracts attention of many scientists from all over the world. Bionanomaterials are prepared using a variety of physical, chemical, and biological techniques and methods. Many different metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are reported to be produced by biological systems, including bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, yeasts, viruses, and plants. Among all of them, biocompatible zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), obtained through biosynthesis with the aid of plant-derived materials, appears to be a highly successful way to create a fast, clean, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly platform for the production and application of these bionanomaterials. This review focuses on the plant extractderived ZnO NPs synthesis, with a special emphasis on the recent advances and applications of these nanomaterials

Appendiceal intussusception to the cecum caused by mucocele of the appendix: Laparoscopic approach

AbstractINTRODUCTIONAppendiceal intussusception is a very rare disease that is found in only 0.01% of patients who have undergone an appendectomy. Clinical symptoms vary and some patients are asymptomatic. Laparoscopic surgery for appendiceal tumors is still controversial. We present a case of intussusception of the appendix with a mucinous cystadenoma treated by laparoscopic surgery.PRESENTATION OF CASEWe report a case of 47 year-old-women patient who presented with a six month history of intermittent right lower abdominal pain. Abdominal computer tomography CT showed appendiceal mass with intussusception. A laparoscopic right hemicolectomy was performed because the tumor involved the entire appendix. Histopathological examination revealed mucocele due to mucinous cystadenoma of appendix.DISCUSSIONAppendiceal intussusception to the cecum caused by mucocele of the appendix is extremely rare. It is very difficult to diagnose the presence of an intussuscepted appendix pre-operatively and investigations will usually include colonoscopy and CT scan. An appendicular intussusception should not be reduced by colonoscopy. Laparoscopic surgery for appendiceal tumors is still controversial; the main concerns to be addressed are the adequacy of resection and intraperitoneal rupture of the tumor. Our patient successfully underwent laparoscopic surgery without any complications.CONCLUSIONAppendiceal intussusception to the cecum caused by mucocele of the appendix is a rare cause of abdominal pain and difficult to diagnose. The laparoscopic surgery for appendiceal tumors is safe, feasible, and even may be beneficial

The present study aims to investigate the effect of leptin treatment on ovarian weight and ovarian follicle enumeration during development in female Wistar rats. The experiment is carried out on 30 and 60-day-old females. Leptin diluted in 9‰ NaCl is injected daily for 5 days intraperitoneally at a dose of 8 μg / 100 g of body weight to the experimental females. The same volume of the NaCl solution is injected into the controls. Animals are sacrificed 24 hours after the last injection. Ovaries are removed and weighed. The right ovaries are fixed in 10% formaldehyde for histological study. The results reveal a non-significant increase in absolute and relative mean weights of the right and left ovaries in leptin-treated groups compared to controls in both immature and adult rats. The histological study reveals that in 30-day-old females, the number of atretic follicles is most important compared to normal follicles after leptin-treatment, which suggests that leptin appears to stimulate cellular apoptosis at immature age. These results allow us to conclude that leptin seems to influence ovarian weight and follicular atresia

Potential Benefit of Intra-operative Administration of Ketorolac on Breast Cancer Recurrence According to the Patient's Body Mass Index

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are currently used in some countries as analgesics in primary cancer surgery. Retrospective studies suggest that NSAIDs could reduce breast cancer recurrences. Because NSAIDs also act on biological mechanisms present in patients with increased adiposity, we aimed at assessing whether the intra-operative administration of ketorolac or diclofenac would be associated with a reduction of recurrence in patients with elevated body mass index (BMI). Methods: We considered two institutional retrospective series of 827 and 1007 patients evaluating the administration of ketorolac (n = 529 with, n = 298 without) or diclofenac (n = 787 with, n = 220 without). The BMI subgroups were defined as less than 25 kg/m2 (lean) and 25 or more kg/m2 (overweight and obese). Cumulative incidence estimation of distant metastases as well as Fine-Gray and Dixon-Simon models was used. These analyses were adjusted for clinico-pathological variables. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: The administration of ketorolac was statistically significantly associated with decreased incidence of distant recurrences (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]= 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.37 to 0.96, P = .03). In particular, the association was evident in the high-body mass index (BMI) group of patients (aHR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.31 to 0.96, P = .04). The administration of diclofenac was not statistically significantly associated with decreased incidence of distant recurrences, either in the global population or in the BMI subgroups. Conclusions: These results show that the intra-operative administration of ketorolac, but not diclofenac, is statistically significantly associated with a reduction of distant recurrences in patients with increased BMI. Altogether, this study points to a potentially important repositioning of ketorolac in the intra-operative treatment of patients with elevated BMI that, if prospectively validated, might be as impactful as and cheaper than adjuvant systemic anticancer therapies.status: publishe
