An improved synthesis, crystal structures, and metallochromism of salts of [Ru(tolyl-terpy)(CN)(3)](-)
The previously reported complex [Ru(ttpy)(CN)(3)] [ttpy = 4'(p-tolyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine] is conveniently synthesised by reaction of ttpy with Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2 to give [Ru(ttpy)(dmso)Cl-2], which reacts in turn with KCN in aqueous ethanol to afford [Ru(ttpy)(CN)(3)] which was isolated and crystallographically characterised as both its (PPN)(+) and K+ salts. The K+ salt contains clusters containing three complex anions and three K+ cations connected by end-on and side-on cyanide ligation to the K+ ions. The solution speciation behaviour of [Ru(ttpy)(CN)(3)] was investigated with both Zn2+ and K+ salts in MeCN, a solvent sufficiently non-competitive to allow the added metal cations to associate with the complex anion via the externally-directed cyanide lone pairs. UV-Vis spectroscopic titration of (PPN)[Ru(ttpy)(CN)(3)] with Zn(ClO4)(2) showed a blue shift of 2900 cm (1) in the (MLCT)-M-1 absorption manifold due to the ` metallochromism' effect; a series of distinct binding events could be discerned corresponding to formation of 4:1, 1:1 and then 1:3 anion: cation adducts, all with high formation constants, as the titration proceeded. In contrast titration of (PPN)[Ru(ttpy)(CN)(3)] with the more weakly Lewis-acidic KPF6 resulted in a much smaller blue-shift of the 1MLCT absorptions, and the titration data corresponded to formation of 1:1 and then 2: 1 cation: anion adducts with weaker stepwise association constants of the order of 10(4) and then 10(3) M (1). Although association of [Ru(ttpy)(CN)(3)] resulted in a blue-shift of the (MLCT)-M-1 absorptions, the luminescence was steadily quenched, as raising the (MLCT)-M-3 level makes radiationless decay via a lowlying (MC)-M-3 state possible. Strong Enhancement of the Critical Current at the Antiferromagnetic Transition in ErNi2B2C Single Crystals
We report on transport and magnetization measurements of the critical current
density Jc in ErNi2B2C single crystals that show strongly enhanced vortex
pinning at the Neel temperature TN and low applied fields. The height of the
observed Jc peak decreases with increasing magnetic field in clear contrast
with that of the peak effect found at the upper critical field. We also
performed the first angular transport measurements of Jc ever conducted on this
compound. They reveal the correlated nature of this pinning enhancement, which
we attribute to the formation of antiphase boundaries at TN.Comment: 3 figure
Antiferromagnetism at the YBa2Cu3O7 / La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 interface
The magnetic properties of a series of YBa2Cu3O7-x/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3
(YBCO/LC1/3MO) superlattices grown by dc sputtering at high oxygen pressures
(3.5 mbar) show the expected ferromagnetic behaviour. However, field cooled
hysteresis loops at low temperature show the unexpected existence of exchange
bias, effect associated with the existence of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic
(F/AF) interfaces. The blocking temperature (TB) is found thickness dependent
and the exchange bias field (HEB) is found inversely proportional to the FM
layer thickness, as expected. The presence of an AF material is probably
associated to interface disorder and Mn valence shift towards Mn4+.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, submitted to Applied Physics Letter
Estimation of the solar wind extreme events
This research provides an analysis of extreme events in the solar wind and in the magnetosphere
due to disturbances of the solar wind. Extreme value theory has been applied to a 20-year data set from the
Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft for the period 1998–2017. The solar proton speed, solar proton
temperature, solar proton density, and magnetic field have been analyzed to characterize extreme events in
the solar wind. The solar wind electric field, vBz
has been analyzed to characterize the impact from extreme
disturbances in the solar wind to the magnetosphere. These extreme values were estimated for 1-in-40- and
1-in-80-year events, which represent two and four times the range of the original data set. The estimated values
were verified in comparison with measured values of extreme events recorded in previous years. Finally, our

Content categories system for body constructs applied to patients with mastectomy
Body image is a predictor of psychological adjustment to cancer and a risk factor for depression. Questionnaires to assess body image in cancer patients assume a preconceived concept of body image and do not reflect the patient's subjective experience. This study aims to develop a content categories system for analyzing body constructs in breast cancer patients from their own experience. Methods The sample comprised 542 constructs, from 23 patients subjected to surgery (12 mastectomy/11 breast-conserving surgery) and 24 controls. Participants were assessed with the Body Grid. Three independent judges coded the constructs elicited following a tentative categories system. Result Six categories appeared: Objective Appearance, Esthetics, Function, Strength, Energy and Emotions, with similar distribution in the samples. Objective Appearance, Esthetics and Emotions were the most used. The inter-rater agreement was very good. Conclusions These findings highlight the importance of knowing which thematic areas concern the most to each patient and the absent ones in their constructions, in order to focus psychotherapy on the developing of new meanings that allow a more integrated body imag

Denitrification-derived nitric oxide modulates biofilm formation in Azospirillum brasilense
Azospirillum brasilense is a rhizobacterium that provides beneficial effects on plants when they colonize roots. The formation of complex bacterial communities known as biofilms begins with the interaction of planktonic cells with surfaces in response to appropriate signals. Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule implicated in numerous processes in bacteria, including biofilm formation or dispersion, depending on genera and lifestyle. Azospirillum brasilense Sp245 produces NO by denitrification having a role in root growth promotion. We analyzed the role of endogenously produced NO on biofilm formation in A. brasilense Sp245 and in a periplasmic nitrate reductase mutant (napA::Tn5; Faj164) affected in NO production. Cells were statically grown in media with nitrate or ammonium as nitrogen sources and examined for biofilm formation using crystal violet and by confocal laser microscopy. Both strains formed bio- films, but the mutant produced less than half compared with the wild type in nitrate medium showing impaired nitrite production in this condition. NO measurements in biofilm confirmed lower values in the mutant strain. The addition of a NO donor showed that NO influences biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner and reverses the mutant phenotype, indicating that Nap positively regulates the formation of biofilm in A. brasilense Sp245.Fil: Arruebarrena Di Palma, Andrés.
