    Casimir forces from a loop integral formulation

    We reformulate the Casimir force in the presence of a non-trivial background. The force may be written in terms of loop variables, the loop being a curve around the scattering sites. A natural path ordering of exponentials take place when a particular representation of the scattering centres is given.     Embedding massive flavor in ABJM

    We add massive fundamental matter to the ABJM model by adding D6-branes wrapped asymptotically over RP3. We find two types of solutions at finite temperature, one that enters the black hole and one that ends before the black hole. We analyze the behavior of the free energy as a function of temperature, and find that the system exhibits a phase transition between the two types of solutions, similar to what happens in the D3-D7 system. We also analyze the meson spectrum in the model and find several massive scalar modes, again, quite like the D3-D7 system.     We consider the U(1) problem within the AdS/CFT framework. We explain how the Witten-Veneziano formula for the eta' mass is related to a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism. The closed string mode, that cancels the anomaly of the gauged U(1) axial symmetry, is identified with the eta' meson.     The Structure of the Non-SUSY Baryonic Branch of Klebanov-Strassler

    We study the two-dimensional space of supergravity solutions corresponding to non-supersymmetric deformations of the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. By combining analytical methods with a numerical survey of the parameter space, we find that this solution space includes as limits the softly-broken N=1 solutions of Gubser et al. and those of Dymarsky and Kuperstein. We also identify a one-dimensional family of solutions corresponding to a natural non-supersymmetric generalisation of Klebanov-Strassler, and one corresponding to the limit in which supersymmetry is completely absent, even in the far UV. For almost all of the parameter space we find indications that much of the structure of the supersymmetric baryonic branch survives.Comment: 29 pages plus appendices, 11 figure

    Gauge-gravity correspondence in de Sitter braneworld

    We study the braneworld solutions based on a solvable model of 5d gauged supergravity with two scalars of conformal dimension three, which correspond to bilinear operators of fermions in the dual N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory on the boundary. An accelerating braneworld solution is obtained when both scalars are taken as the form of deformations of the super Yang-Mills theory and the bulk supersymmetry is broken. This solution is smoothly connected to the Poincare invariant brane in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant. The stability of this brane-solution and the correspondence to the gauge theory are addressed.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur

    Integrable Open Spin Chains in Defect Conformal Field Theory

    We demonstrate that the one-loop dilatation generator for the scalar sector of a certain perturbation of N=4 Super Yang-Mills with fundamentals is the Hamiltonian of an integrable spin chain with open boundary conditions. The theory is a supersymmetric defect conformal field theory (dCFT) with the fundamentals in hypermultiplets confined to a codimension one defect. We obtain a K-matrix satisfying a suitably generalized form of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation, study the Bethe ansatz equations and demonstrate how Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions arise in field theory, and match to existing results in the plane wave limit.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX. v2: references added, typos correcte

    Mesons in gauge/gravity dual with large number of fundamental fields

    In view of extending gauge/gravity dualities with flavour beyond the probe approximation, we establish the gravity dual description of mesons for a three-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter. For this purpose we consider the fully backreacted D2/D6 brane solution of Cherkis and Hashimoto in an approximation due to Pelc and Siebelink. The low-energy field theory is the IR fixed point theory of three-dimensional N=4 SU(N_c) super Yang-Mills with N_f fundamental fields, which we consider in a large N_c and N_f limit with N_f/N_c finite and fixed. We discuss the dictionary between meson-like operators and supergravity fluctuations in the corresponding near-horizon geometry. In particular, we find that the mesons are dual to the low-energy limit of closed string states. In analogy to computations of glueball mass spectra, we calculate the mass of the lowest-lying meson and find that it depends linearly on the quark mass.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 6 figures, v2: fig. 4 added, refs. adde

    Dynamics of Fundamental Matter in N=2* Yang-Mills Theory

    We study the dynamics of quenched fundamental matter in N=2∗\mathcal{N}=2^\ast supersymmetric large NN SU(N) Yang-Mills theory at zero temperature. Our tools for this study are probe D7-branes in the holographically dual N=2∗\mathcal{N}=2^\ast Pilch-Warner gravitational background. Previous work using D3-brane probes of this geometry has shown that it captures the physics of a special slice of the Coulomb branch moduli space of the gauge theory, where the NN constituent D3-branes form a dense one dimensional locus known as the enhancon, located deep in the infrared. Our present work shows how this physics is supplemented by the physics of dynamical flavours, revealed by the D7-branes embeddings we find. The Pilch-Warner background introduces new divergences into the D7-branes free energy, which we are able to remove with a single counterterm. We find a family of D7-brane embeddings in the geometry and discuss their properties. We study the physics of the quark condensate, constituent quark mass, and part of the meson spectrum. Notably, there is a special zero mass embedding that ends on the enhancon, which shows that while the geometry acts repulsively on the D7-branes, it does not do so in a way that produces spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures.     Superconformal Gauge Theories and Non-Critical Superstrings

    We consider effective actions for six-dimensional non-critical superstrings. We show that the addition of NN units of R-R flux and of NfN_f space-time filling D5-branes produces AdS5×S1AdS_5 \times S^1 solutions with curvature comparable to the string scale. These solutions have the right structure to be dual to N=1{\cal N}=1 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theories with NfN_f flavors. We further suggest bounds on the mass-squared of tachyonic fields in this background that should restrict the theory to the conformal window.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure v4: Minor change
