    Magma Transfer and Evolution in Channels within the Arc Crust: the Pyroxenitic Feeder Pipes of Sapat (Kohistan, Pakistan)

    Our understanding of the mode of transfer and evolution of arc magmas in the lower arc crust is limited by the accessibility of arc roots, which are mainly documented by remote geophysical methods. At the same time, the fractionation processes of primitive parental melts defining a liquid line of descent from basalt to dacite are well defined by experimental petrology. However, the structural evidence for transfer of magmas evolving during their ascent remains basically uncharacterized. The Sapat Complex represents a lower crust segment of the exhumed Kohistan paleo-island arc and exposes kilometer-sized pyroxenite bodies that grew at the expense of host metagabbroic sill sequences. The largest of these pyroxenite bodies are mainly composed of wehrlite to olivine-clinopyroxenite, whereas the smaller bodies show a sequence of cumulative rocks, from ol-clinopyroxenite through various gabbros to tonalite. Inside the bodies, vertical magmatic and reactional structures indicate magma ascent accompanied by cumulate formation. Altogether, cumulates document the evolution of an initially primitive basaltic melt (at ∼7 kbar) that contained ≥5 wt % H2O. After cotectic olivine and clinopyroxene fractionation, the appearance of hornblende at the expense of clinopyroxene marks a stepping stone in the melt evolution. From this point, the appearance of orthopyroxene and hornblende at the expense of olivine drives the magma towards an andesitic composition, from which the crystallization of An-rich plagioclase and hornblende drives the melt to evolve further. During peritectic hornblende crystallization fluid-precipitated assemblages occur showing that the melts have reached water-saturation while they were crystallizing and percolating, thus degassing H2O-rich fluids. Structural observations, mineral and bulk-rock compositions, and calculated seismic P-wave velocities identify the ultramafic pipe-shaped bodies as magmatic conduits in which melt ascended from the mantle through the lower crust to feed upper crustal magma chambers and volcanic system

    Pion photoproduction off the proton in a gauge-invariant chiral unitary framework

    We investigate pion photoproduction off the proton in a manifestly gauge-invariant chiral unitary extension of chiral perturbation theory. In a first step, we consider meson-baryon scattering taking into account all next-to-leading order contact interactions. The resulting low-energy constants are determined by a fit to s-wave pion-nucleon scattering and the low-energy data for the reaction pi- p --> eta n. To assess the theoretical uncertainty, we perform two different fit strategies. Having determined the low-energy constants, we then analyse the data on the s-wave multipole amplitudes E0+ of pion and eta photoproduction. These are parameter-free predictions, as the two new low-energy constants are determined by the neutron and proton magnetic moments.Comment: 23 pages, 17 figure

    The North Ecliptic Pole Supercluster

    We have used the ROSAT All-Sky Survey to detect a known supercluster at z=0.087 in the North Ecliptic Pole region. The X-ray data greatly improve our understanding of this supercluster's characteristics, approximately doubling our knowledge of the structure's spatial extent and tripling the cluster/group membership compared to the optical discovery data. The supercluster is a rich structure consisting of at least 21 galaxy clusters and groups, 12 AGN, 61 IRAS galaxies, and various other objects. A majority of these components were discovered with the X-ray data, but the supercluster is also robustly detected in optical, IR, and UV wavebands. Extending 129 x 102 x 67 (1/h50 Mpc)^3, the North Ecliptic Pole Supercluster has a flattened shape oriented nearly edge-on to our line-of-sight. Owing to the softness of the ROSAT X-ray passband and the deep exposure over a large solid angle, we have detected for the first time a significant population of X-ray emitting galaxy groups in a supercluster.     Thermotectonic evolution of an extensional dome: the Cenozoic Osogovo-Lisets core complex (Kraishte zone, western Bulgaria)

    The Kraishte region of Bulgaria is located at the junction of the Balkanides and Hellenides-Dinarides tectonic belts. Fission-track analysis on both apatites and zircons documents the Cenozoic exhumation of a Precambrian basement bounded by low-angle detachments. Late Eocene-Oligocene extension began prior to 47Ma and was dominantly in a top-to-the-southwest direction, confirmed by the sense of younging of apatite and zircon ages. This crustal extension controlled the formation of half-graben sedimentary basins on the hanging walls of the detachments. Thermal modelling of these hanging wall units provides evidence for heat transfer across the detachments from a relatively warm rising footwall. From 32 to 29Ma, pervasive magmatic activity resulted in the emplacement of rhyolitic to dacitic subvolcanic bodies and dykes, along with intrusion of the Osogovo granite. The results give evidence for extension in the southern Balkan older than, and separated from, the Miocene to Quaternary Aegean extension. This might reflect transtension during northeastward extrusion and rotation of continental fragments around the western boundary of Moesia. Eocene-Oligocene extension seems to have been controlled by the distribution of earlier thickening all around the Carpatho-Balkanic orocline, which is reflected by the Cretaceous emplacement of the Morava Nappe in the Kraisht

    Asymptotic Conformal Yano--Killing Tensors for Schwarzschild Metric

    The asymptotic conformal Yano--Killing tensor proposed in J. Jezierski, On the relation between metric and spin-2 formulation of linearized Einstein theory [GRG, in print (1994)] is analyzed for Schwarzschild metric and tensor equations defining this object are given. The result shows that the Schwarzschild metric (and other metrics which are asymptotically ``Schwarzschildean'' up to O(1/r^2) at spatial infinity) is among the metrics fullfilling stronger asymptotic conditions and supertranslations ambiguities disappear. It is also clear from the result that 14 asymptotic gravitational charges are well defined on the ``Schwarzschildean'' background.Comment: 8 pages, latex, no figure

    Constraining q_0 with Cluster Gas Mass Fractions: A Feasibility Study

    As the largest gravitationally bound objects in the universe, clusters of galaxies may contain a fair sample of the baryonic mass fraction of the universe. Since the gas mass fraction from the hot ICM is believed to be constant in time, the value of the cosmological deceleration parameter q0q_0 can be determined by comparing the calculated gas mass fraction in nearby and distant clusters (Pen 1997). To test the potential of this method, we compare the gas fractions derived for a sample of luminous (LX>1045L_X > 10^{45} erg s−1^{-1}), nearby clusters with those calculated for eight luminous, distant (0.3<z<0.60.3 < z < 0.6) clusters using ASCA and ROSAT observations. For consistency, we evaluate the gas mass fraction at a fixed physical radius of 1 h50−1h_{50}^{-1} Mpc (assuming q0=0.0q_0=0.0). We find a best fit value of q0=0.07q_0 = 0.07 with -0.47 < q_0 < 0.67 at 95% confidence. We also determine the gas fraction using the method of Evrard, Metzler, & Navarro (1997) to find the total mass within r500r_{500}, the radius where the mean overdensity of matter is 500 times the critical density. In simulations, this method reduces the scatter in the determination of gravitational mass without biasing the mean. We find that it also reduces the scatter in actual observations for nearby clusters, but not as much as simulations suggest. Using this method, the best fit value is q0=0.04q_0 = 0.04 with -0.50 < q_0 < 0.64. The excellent agreement between these two methods suggests that this may be a useful technique for determining q0q_0.     The isolation of plasmids containing DNA complementary to messenger RNA for variant surface glycoproteins of Trypanosoma brucei.

    We have isolated poly(A)+ RNA from four antigenic variants (117, 118, 121, 221) of one clone of Trypanosoma brucei. Translation of these poly(A)+ RNAs in a rabbit reticulocyte lysate gave rise to proteins that could be precipitated with antisera against homologous variant surface glycoprotein, the protein responsible for antigenic variation in trypanosomes. From the electrophoretic mobility of these in vitro products in sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) gels we infer that variant surface glycoproteins (VSGs) are made as pre-proteins, which require trimming to yield mature VSGs. The total translation products from the four poly(A)+ RNAs produced a complex set of bands on SDS gels, which only differed in the region where the variant pre-glycoproteins migrated. The only detectable variation in the messenger RNA populations of these variants is, therefore, in the messenger RNA for variant pre-glycoproteins. We have made duplex DNA copies of these poly(A)+ RNAs, linked the complementary DNA to plasmid pBR322 by GC tailing and cloned this recombinant DNA in Escherichia coli. Colony hybridization with complementary DNA made on poly(A)+ RNA showed that 7--10% of the colonies contained DNA that hybridized only with the homologous probe. Plasmid DNA was isolated from ten such colonies (two or three of each variant complementary DNA), bound to diazobenzyloxymethyl-cellulose (DBM) paper and used to select complementary messenger RNA from total poly(A)+ RNA by hybridization. In eight cases the RNA recovered from the filter gave variant pre-glycoprotein as the predominant product of in vitro translation. Poly(A)+ RNA from each of the variants only hydridized to the homologous complementary DNA in filter hybridizations. Each trypanosome variant, therefore, contains no detectable messenger RNAs for the three heterologous variant-specific glycoproteins tested.
