A Smirnov-Bickel-Rosenblatt theorem for compactly-supported wavelets
In nonparametric statistical problems, we wish to find an estimator of an
unknown function f. We can split its error into bias and variance terms;
Smirnov, Bickel and Rosenblatt have shown that, for a histogram or kernel
estimate, the supremum norm of the variance term is asymptotically distributed
as a Gumbel random variable. In the following, we prove a version of this
result for estimators using compactly-supported wavelets, a popular tool in
nonparametric statistics. Our result relies on an assumption on the nature of
the wavelet, which must be verified by provably-good numerical approximations.
We verify our assumption for Daubechies wavelets and symlets, with N = 6, ...,
20 vanishing moments; larger values of N, and other wavelet bases, are easily
checked, and we conjecture that our assumption holds also in those cases
The Voluntary Adjustment of Railroad Obligations
Automatic memory management techniques eliminate many programming errors that are both hard to find and to correct. However, these techniques are not yet used in embedded systems with hard realtime applications. The reason is that current methods for automatic memory management have a number of drawbacks. The two major ones are: (1) not being able to always guarantee short real-time deadlines and (2) using large amounts of extra memory. Memory is usually a scarce resource in embedded applications. In this paper we present a new technique, Real-Time Reference Counting (RTRC) that overcomes the current problems and makes automatic memory management attractive also for hard real-time applications. The main contribution of RTRC is that often all memory can be used to store live objects. This should be compared to a memory overhead of about 500% for garbage collectors based on copying techniques and about 50% for garbage collectors based on mark-and-sweep techniques
Investigation of phonon behavior in Pr2NiMnO6 by micro-Raman spectroscopy
The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin
phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using
micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single
ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation
magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642,
and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to
anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the
657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of a
relatively weak spin-phonon coupling in Pr2NiMnO6 contrary to other double
perovskites previously studied.Comment: 10 pages, 4 fig
Interviewing suspects: examining the association between skills, questioning, evidence disclosure, and interview outcomes
The interviewing of suspects is an important element in the investigation of crime. However, studies concerning actual performance of investigators when undertaking such interviews remain sparse. Nevertheless, in England and Wales, since the introduction of a prescribed framework over 20 years ago, field studies have generally shown an improvement in interviewing performance, notwithstanding ongoing concerns largely relating to the more demanding aspects (such as building/maintaining rapport, intermittent summarising and the logical development of topics). Using a sample of 70 real-life interviews, the present study examined questioning and various evidence disclosure strategies (which have also been found demanding), examining their relationships between interview skills and interview outcomes. It was found that when evidence was disclosed gradually (but revealed later), interviews were generally both more skilled and involved the gaining of comprehensive accounts, whereas when evidence was disclosed either early or very late, interviews were found to be both less skilled and less likely to involve this outcome. These findings contribute towards an increased research base for the prescribed framework
Mechanisms of root reinforcement in soils:An experimental methodology using four-dimensional X-ray computed tomography and digital volume correlation
Vegetation on railway or highway slopes can improve slope stability through the generation of soil pore water suctions by plant transpiration and mechanical soil reinforcement by the roots. To incorporate the enhanced shearing resistance and stiffness of root-reinforced soils in stability calculations, it is necessary to understand and quantify its effectiveness. This requires integrated and sophisticated experimental and multiscale modelling approaches to develop an understanding of the processes at different length scales, from individual root-soil interaction through to full soil-profile or slope scale. One of the challenges with multiscale models is ensuring that they sufficiently closely represent real behaviour. This requires calibration against detailed high-quality and data-rich experiments. This study presents a novel experimental methodology, which combines in situ direct shear loading of a willow root reinforced soil with X-ray computed tomography to capture the 3D chronology of soil and root deformation within the shear zone. Digital volume correlation (DVC) analysis was applied to the computed tomography (CT) dataset to obtain full-field 3D displacement and strain information. This paper demonstrates the feasibility and discusses the challenges associated with DVC experiments on root-reinforced soils
Size of Outbreaks Near the Epidemic Threshold
The spread of infectious diseases near the epidemic threshold is
investigated. Scaling laws for the size and the duration of outbreaks
originating from a single infected individual in a large susceptible population
are obtained. The maximal size of an outbreak n_* scales as N^{2/3} with N the
population size. This scaling law implies that the average outbreak size
scales as N^{1/3}. Moreover, the maximal and the average duration of an
outbreak grow as t_* ~ N^{1/3} and ~ ln N, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Promiscuity in the part-phosphorylative EntnerâDoudoroff pathway of the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus
AbstractThe hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus metabolises glucose and galactose by a âpromiscuousâ non-phosphorylative variant of the EntnerâDoudoroff pathway, in which a series of enzymes have sufficient substrate promiscuity to permit the metabolism of both sugars. Recently, it has been proposed that the part-phosphorylative EntnerâDoudoroff pathway occurs in parallel in S. solfataricus as an alternative route for glucose metabolism. In this report we demonstrate, by in vitro kinetic studies of d-2-keto-3-deoxygluconate (KDG) kinase and KDG aldolase, that the part-phosphorylative pathway in S. solfataricus is also promiscuous for the metabolism of both glucose and galactose
The changing patterns of group politics in Britain
Two interpretations of ways in which group politics in Britain have presented challenges to democracy are reviewed: neo-corporatism or pluralistic stagnation and the rise of single issue interest groups. The disappearance of the first paradigm created a political space for the second to emerge. A three-phase model of group activity is developed: a phase centred around production interests, followed by the development of broadly based 'other regarding' groups, succeeded by fragmented, inner directed groups focusing on particular interests. Explanations of the decay of corporatism are reviewed. Single issue group activity has increased as party membership has declined and is facilitated by changes in traditional media and the development of the internet. Such groups can overload the policy-making process and frustrate depoliticisation. Debates about the constitution and governance have largely ignored these issues and there is need for a debate
A case-control study of cryptorchidism and maternal hormone concentrations in early pregnancy.
Serum samples taken between 6 and 20 weeks of gestation were obtained from 28 mothers who gave birth to cryptorchid sons (cases) and from 108 control mothers. In comparison with controls the cases had 10% higher geometric mean oestradiol (95% CI -13% to +39%: P=0.42) and 10% lower geometric mean testosterone (95% CI -27% to +10%: P=0.30). Among the samples collected between 6 and 14 weeks of gestation geometric mean concentrations of oestradiol and testosterone were 5% lower (95% CI -32% to +31%: P=0.74) and 25% lower (95% CI -45% to +1%: P=0.06) respectively in cases than in controls. Among the samples collected between 15 and 20 weeks of gestation geometric mean concentrations of oestradiol and testosterone were 29% higher (95% CI -8% to +79%: P=0.14) and 21% higher (95% CI -8% to +60%: P=0.18) respectively in cases than in controls. The results do not support the hypothesis that cryptorchidism may be caused by high concentrations of oestradiol in the maternal blood during the first phase of testicular descent, but suggest that the possible association of cryptorchidism with low maternal testosterone during early gestation should be further investigated
Structurally-informed Mutagenesis of a Stereochemically Promiscuous Aldolase Produces Mutants that Catalyse the Diastereoselective Syntheses of all Four Stereoisomers of 3-Deoxy-Hexulosonic acid
[Image: see text] A 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate aldolase from the hyperthermophile Sulfolobus solfataricus catalyzes the nonstereoselective aldol reaction of pyruvate and d-glyceraldehyde to produce 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate (d-KDGlc) and 2-keto-3-deoxy-d-galactonate (d-KDGal). Previous investigations into curing the stereochemical promiscuity of this hyperstable aldolase used high-resolution structures of the aldolase bound to d-KDGlc or d-KDGal to identify critical amino acids involved in substrate binding for mutation. This structure-guided approach enabled mutant variants to be created that could stereoselectively catalyze the aldol reaction of pyruvate and natural d-glyceraldehyde to selectively afford d-KDGlc or d-KDGal. Here we describe the creation of two further mutants of this Sulfolobus aldolase that can be used to catalyze aldol reactions between pyruvate and non-natural l-glyceraldehyde to enable the diastereoselective synthesis of l-KDGlc and l-KDGal. High-resolution crystal structures of all four variant aldolases have been determined (both unliganded and liganded), including Variant 1 with d-KDGlc, Variant 2 with pyruvate, Variant 3 with l-KDGlc, and Variant 4 with l-KDGal. These structures have enabled us to rationalize the observed changes in diastereoselectivities in these variant-catalyzed aldol reactions at a molecular level. Interestingly, the active site of Variant 4 was found to be sufficiently flexible to enable catalytically important amino acids to be replaced while still retaining sufficient enzymic activity to enable production of l-KDGal
