    A Non-Realistic Approach for Natural Languages

    The structure of natural languages is usually studied from three major different but interconnected points of view: syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. If we consider that the main purpose of natural languages is communication, we should consider another dimension for languages, which deals with the influence of internal states of communicating individuals on meanings. Such a dimension we refer to as internalism. Within this context, internalism cannot be confused with psycholinguistics, in the same way pragmatics cannot be confused with sociolinguistics. In particular, we argue, language is tied to its systematic use. This view leads us to a non-realist perspective on linguistics. We analyze the role of natural languages into dialogues, by comparing our proposal to the dialogical approach to logic, which considers a dialogue as a game. Within our approach, there is no way to guarantee that two parties involved in a dialogue are playing the same game, due to unavoidable (and frequently hidden) differences in their respective internal states. Another contribution of this paper is to argue that semantics plays a more fundamental role than syntax in the cognitive acquisition of languages

    The use of soybean integrated pest management in Brazil: a review.

    The adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) in soybean is a great example of how this technology is essential to guarantee crop sustainability and productivity. In Brazil, up to 1970, soybean was cultivated with the use of pesticides applied without the adoption of any economic threshold to base this decision. As a consequence, a six-insecticide spraying per crop season used to be the average insecticide dosage. With the introduction of Soybean-IPM, the use of pesticides was reduced to approximately two applications per season. Comparing these two contrasting situations, the advantages of using IPM methods cannot be ignored, since they are economically and mostly environmentally feasible. Despite the benefits provided by Soybean-IPM, this program was abandoned in Brazil, and its principles were almost forgotten, and, as a consequence, insecticide use increased. The success and failures of Soybean-IPM in Brazil will be further analyzed in this review in an attempt to point out how safe this technology is and whether there is any risk in fully adopting this approach

    As mudanças climáticas podem afetar a distribuição e a intensidade de infestação de pragas por meio de efeitos diretos sobre sua biologia. Sendo assim, para avaliar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas (25ºC, 28ºC, 31ºC, 34ºC e 37ºC), sobre aspectos biológicos de Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, estudos foram conduzidos em laboratório em condições controladas por três gerações consecutivas desse lepidóptero. Os insetos foram criados em câmaras climatizadas e alimentados com dieta artificial. A duração do ciclo total de desenvolvimento da praga decresceu com o aumento da temperatura na faixa de 25°C a 34°C. A longevidade de machos e fêmeas foi reduzida com aumento da temperatura entre 25ºC e 28ºC. A viabilidade de ovos foi maior na temperatura de 25ºC. A razão sexual não foi influenciada pela temperatura, portanto, a elevação brusca da temperatura inviabiliza o desenvolvimento e pode afetar negativamente as populações de A. gemmatalis diminuindo sua ocorrência na cultura da soja

    Eccentric Exercise Leads To Glial Activation But Not Apoptosis In Mice Spinal Cords.

    The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of 3 overtraining (OT) protocols on the glial activation and apoptosis in the spinal cords of mice. Rodents were divided into control (C; sedentary mice), overtrained by downhill running (OTR/down), overtrained by uphill running (OTR/up) and overtrained by running without inclination (OTR). The incremental load test, ambulation test, exhaustive test and functional behavioural assessment were used as performance evaluation parameters. 36 h after the exhaustive test, the dorsal and ventral parts of the lumbar spinal cord (L4-L6) were dissected for subsequent protein analysis by immunoblotting. The OT protocols led to similar responses of some performance parameters. The ventral glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) protein levels were diminished in the OTR/up and OTR compared to CT and OTR/down groups. The ventral ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba-1), and the dorsal GFAP and Iba-1 protein levels were increased in the OTR/down compared to the other groups. The ratio between the cleaved capase-3/caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-9/caspase-9 measured in the spinal cord were not sensitive to the OT protocols. In summary, the OTR/down activated the glial cells in the motor (i. e. Iba-1) and sensory (i. e. GFAP and Iba-1) neurons without leading to apoptosis
