    Reproducibility and repeatability of measuring the electrical impedance of the pregnant human cervix-the effect of probe size and applied pressure

    Background: The utility of cervical electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as a diagnostic tool is being investigated in clinical trials. We sought to assess the reliability of two different sizes of tetrapolar probes used in measuring cervical impedance. Methods: Cervical transfer impedance was measured at 14 frequencies between 76 and 625 000 Hz from 11 pregnant subjects at term. Repeated measurements were taken with two probes (3 mm and 12 mm diameter) applied softly (approximately 0.7 Newton of force), and firmly (approximately 2.2 Newton) to the surface of the cervix by two observers. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CV) and repeatability standard deviations (SD) were derived from these measurements and compared. Results: Measurements taken by one observer were highly repeatable for both probes as demonstrated by high ICC and low CV values. Probe performance was improved further by firm application. Firm application of the 3 mm probe resulted in ICC values that ranged from 0.936 to 0.986 (p = 0.0001) and CV values between 1.0 and 3.4%. Firm pressure with the 12 mm probe resulted in ICC values that ranged between 0.914 and 0.988 (p = 0.0001) with CV values between 0.7 and 2.1%. In addition, the repeatability SD was low across all frequencies implying that there was low intra-observer variability. Measurements taken by 2 observers with firm application of the 12 mm probe demonstrated moderate reproducibility between 9.8 and 156 kHz, the frequency range in which previous clinical studies have shown predictive association between high cervical resistivity and vaginal delivery: ICC values ranged between 0.528 and 0.638 (p < 0.05), CV values were between 3.3 and 5.2% and reproducibility SD values were also low. In contrast the 3 mm probe demonstrated poor reproducibility at all study frequencies. Conclusion: Measuring cervical resistivity by a single observer with both the 3 and 12 mm probes is highly repeatable whilst inter-observer reproducibility is poor with the 3 mm probe but moderately good when the 12 mm probe is firmly applied to the cervix in the frequency range 9.8 to 156 kHz, consistent with our observations of probe performance in clinical trials

    The massless higher-loop two-point function

    We introduce a new method for computing massless Feynman integrals analytically in parametric form. An analysis of the method yields a criterion for a primitive Feynman graph GG to evaluate to multiple zeta values. The criterion depends only on the topology of GG, and can be checked algorithmically. As a corollary, we reprove the result, due to Bierenbaum and Weinzierl, that the massless 2-loop 2-point function is expressible in terms of multiple zeta values, and generalize this to the 3, 4, and 5-loop cases. We find that the coefficients in the Taylor expansion of planar graphs in this range evaluate to multiple zeta values, but the non-planar graphs with crossing number 1 may evaluate to multiple sums with 6th6^\mathrm{th} roots of unity. Our method fails for the five loop graphs with crossing number 2 obtained by breaking open the bipartite graph K3,4K_{3,4} at one edge

    Some mechanisms of "spontaneous" polarization of superfluid He-4

    Previously, a quantum "tidal" mechanism of polarization of the atoms of He-II was proposed, according to which, as a result of interatomic interaction, each atom of He-II acquires small fluctuating dipole and multipole moments, oriented chaotically on the average. In this work, we show that, in the presence of a temperature or density gradient in He-II, the originally chaotically oriented tidal dipole moments of the atoms become partially ordered, which results in volume polarization of He-II. It is found that the gravitational field of the Earth induces electric induction U =10(-7)V in He-II (for vessel dimensions of the order of 10 cm). We study also the connection of polarization and acceleration, and discuss a possible nature of the electric signal dU = kdT/2e observed by A.S.     RHESSI Results -- Time For a Rethink?

    Hard X-rays and gamma-rays are the most direct signatures of energetic electrons and ions in the sun's atmosphere which is optically thin at these energies and their radiation involves no coherent processes. Being collisional they are complementary to gyro-radiation in probing atmospheric density as opposed to magnetic field and the electrons are primarily 10--100 keV in energy, complementing the (>100 keV) electrons likely responsible for microwave bursts. The pioneering results of the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) are raising the first new major questions concerning solar energetic particles in many years. Some highlights of these results are discussed -- primarily around RHESSI topics on which the authors have had direct research involvement -- particularly when they are raising the need for re-thinking of entrenched ideas.     Langevin Simulation of Thermally Activated Magnetization Reversal in Nanoscale Pillars

    Numerical solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert micromagnetic model incorporating thermal fluctuations and dipole-dipole interactions (calculated by the Fast Multipole Method) are presented for systems composed of nanoscale iron pillars of dimension 9 nm x 9 nm x 150 nm. Hysteresis loops generated under sinusoidally varying fields are obtained, while the coercive field is estimated to be 1979 ±\pm 14 Oe using linear field sweeps at T=0 K. Thermal effects are essential to the relaxation of magnetization trapped in a metastable orientation, such as happens after a rapid reversal of an external magnetic field less than the coercive value. The distribution of switching times is compared to a simple analytic theory that describes reversal with nucleation at the ends of the nanomagnets. Results are also presented for arrays of nanomagnets oriented perpendicular to a flat substrate. Even at a separation of 300 nm, where the field from neighboring pillars is only ∼\sim 1 Oe, the interactions have a significant effect on the switching of the magnets.Comment: 19 pages RevTeX, including 12 figures, clarified discussion of numerical technique

    Status, Testosterone, and Human Intellectual Performance: Stereotype Threat as Status Concern

    Results from two experiments suggest that stereotype-threat effects are special cases of a more general process involving the need to maintain or enhance status. We hypothesized that situations capable of confirming a performance stereotype might represent either a threat to status or an opportunity for enhancement of status, depending on the nature of the stereotype. The positive relationship between baseline testosterone and status sensitivity led us to hypothesize that high testosterone levels in males and females would amplify existing performance expectations when gender-based math-performance stereotypes were activated. In Study 1, high-testosterone females performed poorly on a math test when a negative performance stereotype was primed. In Study 2, high-testosterone males excelled on a math test when a positive performance stereotype was primed.     Genetic characterisation of the majorera goat from Fuerteventura with microsatellites

    The economy of the Fuerteventura Island (Canary Islands, Spain) is based in the caprine exploitation, fundamentally the Majorera goat. There are two different ways of management: 1) an intensive or semiextensive production system and 2) an extensive production where the animals have not owner. The last one is a feral goat denominated Guanil or de Costa goat. The Majorera goat is very important due to its high productivity associated to rusticity and adaptability to the dessert environment characteristic of the Fuerteventura Island. In this work the main goal is to do the genetic characterisation of the Majorera goat existing in Fuerteventura Island, including the Guanil goat. It have been studied 96 animals with 22 microsatellites. Ovine and bovine microsatellites recommended by FAO, ISAG and other authors in the bibliography have been used. These markers were amplified by mean of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique and to get the size separation of the obtained fragments we have developed electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel in an automatic sequencer ABI 377XL (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA).Fuerteventura es una isla, por su pasado, presente y tendencias de futuro, fundamentada en la explotación caprina. Básicamente hay dos tipos de gestión: 1) dirigido a una producción económica y 2) basado en perpetuar el uso tradicional de una cabra salvaje por medio de su manejo en batidas por zonas en lo que denominan los ganaderos: apañadas, para ser posteriormente liberadas. Esta dinámica de gestión ha generado la existencia de un tipo de cabra de intensivo o semiextensivo y la denominada de costa o guanil en caso de no tener propietario. La cabra majorera, que puebla esta isla, es de elevada relevancia debido a su alta productividad asociada a la rusticidad y adaptabilidad a un medio tan desértico. En el presente trabajo se aborda la caracterización genética de la población caprina de la isla de Fuerteventura incluyendo de forma inédita la caracterización de la cabra de costa. Se han estudiado 96 animales de la raza majorera, mediante 22 marcadores microsatélites. Se han empleado microsatélites de ovino y de bovino recomendados por la FAO, por la ISAG (International Society of Animal Genetics) y por otros autores en la bibliografía para este tipo de estudios. Los microsatélites se han amplificado mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) y los fragmentos amplificados se han separado mediante electroforesis en un secuenciador automático ABI 377XL

    We construct an explicit solution of the Cauchy initial value problem for the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for a charged particle with a spin moving in a uniform magnetic field and a perpendicular electric field varying with time. The corresponding Green function (propagator) is given in terms of elementary functions and certain integrals of the fields with a characteristic function, which should be found as an analytic or numerical solution of the equation of motion for the classical oscillator with a time-dependent frequency.     Two Mathematically Equivalent Versions of Maxwell's Equations

    This paper is a review of the canonical proper-time approach to relativistic mechanics and classical electrodynamics. The purpose is to provide a physically complete classical background for a new approach to relativistic quantum theory. Here, we first show that there are two versions of Maxwell's equations. The new version fixes the clock of the field source for all inertial observers. However now, the (natural definition of the effective) speed of light is no longer an invariant for all observers, but depends on the motion of the source. This approach allows us to account for radiation reaction without the Lorentz-Dirac equation, self-energy (divergence), advanced potentials or any assumptions about the structure of the source. The theory provides a new invariance group which, in general, is a nonlinear and nonlocal representation of the Lorentz group. This approach also provides a natural (and unique) definition of simultaneity for all observers. The corresponding particle theory is independent of particle number, noninvariant under time reversal (arrow of time), compatible with quantum mechanics and has a corresponding positive definite canonical Hamiltonian associated with the clock of the source. We also provide a brief review of our work on the foundational aspects of the corresponding relativistic quantum theory.     Combinatorial Markov chains on linear extensions

    We consider generalizations of Schuetzenberger's promotion operator on the set L of linear extensions of a finite poset of size n. This gives rise to a strongly connected graph on L. By assigning weights to the edges of the graph in two different ways, we study two Markov chains, both of which are irreducible. The stationary state of one gives rise to the uniform distribution, whereas the weights of the stationary state of the other has a nice product formula. This generalizes results by Hendricks on the Tsetlin library, which corresponds to the case when the poset is the anti-chain and hence L=S_n is the full symmetric group. We also provide explicit eigenvalues of the transition matrix in general when the poset is a rooted forest.
