    Production Profitability of Ethanol from Alternative Feedstocks in the Texas Panhandle

    The potential of three feedstocks: grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass for ethanol production in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle Region is analyzed using yield and production costs of feedstock, processing cost of feedstock, final demand for ethanol, farm to wholesale marketing margin, and the derived demand price of feedstock. The calculated economic returns per acre of grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass are -45.37,45.37, -410.19, and -150.17respectivelyunderirrigatedconditionand150.17 respectively under irrigated condition and -38.25, -145.09,and145.09, and -29.04 respectively under dryland condition. The evaluation in this study demonstrates that ethanol production from grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass in the Texas Panhandle Region is not economically feasible given the current price for ethanol in Texas.     Evolving Symbolic Controllers

    International audienceThe idea of symbolic controllers tries to bridge the gap between the top-down manual design of the controller architecture, as advocated in Brooks' subsumption architecture, and the bottom-up designer-free approach that is now standard within the Evolutionary Robotics community. The designer provides a set of elementary behavior, and evolution is given the goal of assembling them to solve complex tasks. Two experiments are presented, demonstrating the efficiency and showing the recursiveness of this approach. In particular, the sensitivity with respect to the proposed elementary behaviors, and the robustness w.r.t. generalization of the resulting controllers are studied in detail

    Off-limb (spicule) DEM distribution from SoHO/SUMER observations

    In the present work we derive a Differential Emission Measure (DEM) dis- tribution from a region dominated by spicules. We use spectral data from the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) spectrometer on-board the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) covering the entire SUMER wavelength range taken off-limb in the Northern polar coronal hole to construct this DEM distribution using the CHIANTI atomic database. This distribution is then used to study the thermal properties of the emission contributing to the 171 {\AA} channel in the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). From our off-limb DEM we found that the radiance in the AIA 171 {\AA} channel is dominated by emission from the Fe ix 171.07 {\AA} line and has sparingly little contribution from other lines. The product of the Fe ix 171.07 {\AA} line contribution function with the off-limb DEM was found to have a maximum at logTmax (K) = 5.8 indicating that during spicule observations the emission in this line comes from plasma at transition region temperatures rather than coronal. For comparison, the same product with a quiet Sun and prominence DEM were found to have a maximum at logT max (K) = 5.9 and logTmax (K) = 5.7, respectively. We point out that the interpretation of data obtained from the AIA 171 {\AA} filter should be done with foreknowledge of the thermal nature of the observed phenomenon. For example, with an off-limb DEM we find that only 3.6% of the plasma is above a million degrees, whereas using a quiet Sun DEM, this contribution rises to 15%.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures accepted by Solar Physic

    Precise resonant experiments on Fe8_{8} magnetic clusters have been conducted down to 1.2 K at various tranverse magnetic fields, using a cylindrical resonator cavity with 40 different frequencies between 37 GHz and 110 GHz. All the observed resonances for both single crystal and oriented powder, have been fitted by the eigenstates of the hamiltonian H=DSz2+ESx2gμBHS{\cal H}=-DS_z^2+ES_x^2-g\mu_B{\bf H}\cdot {\bf S}.     Slepton Oscillation at Large Hadron Collider

    Measurement of Lepton-Flavor Violation (LFV) in the minimal SUSY Standard Model (MSSM) at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is studied based on a realistic simulation. We consider the LFV decay of the second-lightest neutralino, χ~20l~lllχ~10\tilde{\chi}^0_2 \to \tilde{l} l' \to l l' \tilde{\chi}^0_1, in the case where the flavor mixing exists in the right-handed sleptons. We scan the parameter space of the minimal supergravity model (MSUGRA) and a more generic model in which we take the Higgsino mass μ\mu as a free parameter. We find that the possibility of observing LFV at LHC is higher if μ\mu is smaller than the MSUGRA prediction; the LFV search at LHC can cover the parameter range where the μeγ\mu \to e \gamma decay can be suppressed by the cancellation among the diagrams for this case.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figure

    Novel Phases in the Field Induced Spin Density Wave State in (TMTSF)_2PF_6

    Magnetoresistance measurements on the quasi one-dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)_2PF_6 performed in magnetic fields B up to 16T, temperatures T down to 0.12K and under pressures P up to 14kbar have revealed new phases on its P-B-T phase diagram. We found a new boundary which subdivides the field induced spin density wave (FISDW) phase diagram into two regions. We showed that a low-temperature region of the FISDW diagram is characterized by a hysteresis behavior typical for the first order transitions, as observed in a number of studies. In contrast to the common believe, in high temperature region of the FISDW phase diagram, the hysteresis and, hence, the first order transitions were found to disappear. Nevertheless, sharp changes in the resistivity slope are observed both in the low and high temperature domains indicating that the cascade of transitions between different subphases exists over all range of the FISDW state. We also found that the temperature dependence of the resistance (at a constant B) changes sign at about the same boundary.     Lepton Flavour Violation in a Class of Lopsided SO(10) Models

    A class of predictive SO(10) grand unified theories with highly asymmetric mass matrices, known as lopsided textures, has been developed to accommodate the observed mixing in the neutrino sector. The model class effectively determines the rate for charged lepton flavour violation, and in particular the branching ratio for μ>eγ\mu -> e \gamma, assuming that the supersymmetric GUT breaks directly to the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM). We find that in light of the combined constraints on the CMSSM parameters from direct searches and from the WMAP satellite observations, the resulting predicted rate for μ>eγ\mu -> e \gamma in this model class can be within the current experimental bounds for low tanβ\tan \beta, but that the next generation of μ>eγ\mu -> e \gamma experiments would effectively rule out this model class if LFV is not detected.Comment: 23 page

    An experimental study of the flow-induced noise created by a wall-mounted finite length airfoil

    AIAA 2014-3290This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the sound produced by flow interaction with a wall-mounted finite length airfoil at low-to-moderate Reynolds number. Acoustic measurements have been taken in an anechoic wind tunnel at a range of Reynolds numbers, angles of attack and for a variety of airfoil aspect ratios (airfoil length to chord ratio) with a single microphone and two perpendicular planar microphone arrays. For comparison, measurements have also been taken with a semi-infinite or two- dimensional airfoil and a half-span airfoil with tip flow but no boundary layer impingement. The experimental data is used to examine changes in wall-mounted finite airfoil noise production as a function of Reynolds number, angle of attack and airfoil aspect ratio.
