Spatially resolved spectroscopy of the exoplanet HR 8799 c
HR 8799 is a multi-planet system detected in direct imaging, with three
companions known so far. Here, we present spatially resolved VLT/NACO
3.88--4.10 micron spectroscopy of the middle planet, HR 8799 c, which has an
estimated mass of ~10 Mjup, temperature of ~1100 K and projected separation of
38 AU. The spectrum shows some differences in the continuum from existing
theoretical models, particularly longwards of 4 microns, implying that detailed
cloud structure or non-equilibrium conditions may play an important role in the

Dimorphic turning bias in spontaneous rotational movement
Turning biases have been associated with unbalanced hemispheric dopaminergic activity, and this activity has been correlated with cue-directed behaviors. Moreover, a sexual differentiation in hippocampal dopaminergic receptors following learning has been shown. In humans, pointing responses towards the starting point is commonly used to assess the accuracy of direction estimation after locomotion. Thus, it may be of interest for the field of spatial cognition to explore human sex differences in spontaneous turning bias when a body rotation is required. To this end, male and female blindfolded subjects were guided in a linear displacement and asked to rotate in order to point in the direction of the starting position. The main finding was a massive difference between men and women. 80% of women showed a turning bias to the right when 69% of men showed a bias to the left. Moreover, these preferences were not correlated with handedness. These results suggest basic preferences associated to sex might influence male and female performance in spatial cognition. They also suggest experimental procedures may be biased in favor of male or female strategies. Therefore, such preferences should be considered in order to gain further insight into the development of more balanced procedures
A Search for Jovian Planets around Hot White Dwarfs
Current searches for extrasolar planets have concentrated on observing the
reflex Doppler shift of solar-type stars. Little is known, however, about
planetary systems around non-solar-type stars. We suggest a new method to
extend planetary searches to hot white dwarfs. Near a hot white dwarf, the
atmosphere of a Jovian planet will be photoionized and emit hydrogen
recombination lines, which may be detected by high- dispersion spectroscopic
observations. Multi-epoch monitoring can be used to distinguish between non-LTE
stellar emission and planetary emission, and to establish the orbital
parameters of the detected planets. In the future, high-precision astrometric
measurements of the hot white dwarf will allow the masses of the detected
planets to be determined. Searches for Jovian planets around hot white dwarfs
will provide invaluable new insight on the development of planetary systems
around stars more massive than the Sun and on how stellar evolution affects
these systems. We present high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of the
white dwarf Feige 34 to demonstrate the complexity and feasibility of the

Improving low achievers' academic performance at university by changing the social value of mastery goals
Recent research has shown that, in a University context, mastery goals are highly valued, and that students may endorse these goals either because they believe in their utility (i.e., social utility), in which case mastery goals are positively linked to achievement, or to create a positive image of themselves (i.e., social desirability), in which case mastery goals do not predict academic achievement. The present two experiments induced high vs. neutral levels of mastery goals' social utility and social desirability. Results confirmed that mastery goals predicted performance only when these goals were presented as socially useful but not socially desirable, especially among low achievers, those who need mastery goals the most to succeed
Binarity of Transit Host Stars - Implications on Planetary Parameters
Straight-forward derivation of planetary parameters can only be achieved in
transiting planetary systems. However, planetary attributes such as radius and
mass strongly depend on stellar host parameters. Discovering a transit host
star to be multiple leads to a necessary revision of the derived stellar and
planetary parameters. Based on our observations of 14 transiting exoplanet
hosts, we derive parameters of the individual components of three transit host
stars (WASP-2, TrES-2, and TrES-4) which we detected to be binaries. Two of
these have not been known to be multiple before. Parameters of the
corresponding exoplanets are revised. High-resolution "Lucky Imaging" with
AstraLux at the 2.2m Calar Alto telescope provided near diffraction limited
images in i' and z' passbands. These results have been combined with existing
planetary data in order to recalibrate planetary attributes. Despite the
faintness (delta mag ~ 4) of the discovered stellar companions to TrES-2,
TrES-4, and WASP-2, light-curve deduced parameters change by up to more than
1sigma. We discuss a possible relation between binary separation and planetary
properties, which - if confirmed - could hint at the influence of binarity on

The GRAVITY fringe tracker: correlation between optical path residuals and atmospheric parameters
After the first year of observations with the GRAVITY fringe tracker, we
compute correlations between the optical path residuals and atmospheric and
astronomical parameters. The median residuals of the optical path residuals are
180 nm on the ATs and 270 nm on the UTs. The residuals are uncorrelated with
the target magnitudes for Kmag below 5.5 on ATs (9 on UTs). The correlation
with the coherence time is however extremely clear, with a drop-off in fringe
