    Thoughts From A Public Librarian

I am fairly new to the Association of Christian Librarians and librarianship. This year, the 43rd conference, was my fourth ACL conference. I have been a reference librarian for about the same number of years. I felt a bit lost at my first conference. I would imagine most people do. I was just beginning to pursue my MLS and, most of my experience had been in public libraries. So, classes that focused on academic issues didn\u27t mean too much to me. However, other conference goers helped me choose a few subjects that could be adapted to public library service and it was clear sailing from then on. Now I choose subjects that I know will either expose me to something that will soon become a part of the public library scene, or a training session in some technical area that I can adapt to my needs

    An Essay on Continued Fractions

English translation of the paper: "De Fractionibus Continuis Dissertatio" by Leonhard Euler.Article previously published in the journal: Mathematical Systems Theory, Vol. 18, pages 295-328.The paper translated here, "De Fractionibus Continuis Dissertatio", represents Euler's first published work on the theory of continued fractions, a subject to which he often returned during his long career. The emphasis is on basic identities and analytic theory, culminating in the development of the continued fraction expansion for e. A discussion of the periodic continued fractions associated with quadratic irrationalities is also included, but applications to number theory come in later publications. Readers interested in mathematical system theory will be concerned primarily with Euler's treatment of the Riccati equation, Sections 28-33. This aspect of the paper sewed as the chief motivation for the translation project. We are grateful to C. I. Bymes for suggesting that we translate this paper. and for his continuing support. Thanks for comments and help with references also to C. Bernlohr, P. Fuhrmann, W. Gragg, A. Lindquist, C. Martin, L. F. Meyers. A. Weil, H. Wimmer, and especially to 1. Burckhardt and G. Mislin of the Euler Commission. As far as the translators know, no translation into English or another modern language has been published

Structure and correlation effects in semiconducting SrTiO₃

    Get PDF
We have investigated the effects of structure change and electron correlation on SrTiO₃ single crystals using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the cubic to tetragonal phase transition at 105 K is manifested by a charge transfer from in-plane (dyz and dzx) bands to out-of-plane (dxy) band, which is opposite to the theoretical predictions. Along this second-order phase transition, we find a smooth evolution of the quasiparticle strength and effective masses. The in-plane band exhibits a peak-dip-hump lineshape, indicating a high degree of correlation on a relatively large (170 meV) energy scale, which is attributed to the polaron formation

The Psychological Impacts of Climate Change Education on Undergraduate Students

This undergraduate senior thesis focuses on the mental health effects of learning about climate change in a college environment and students’ ability to cope with these effects. Specifically, this research asks if increased understanding about climate change makes a student more or less able to cope with the psychological impacts of climate knowledge. Anxiety, grief, and despair can impede climate action, and for a younger generation who is facing the greatest environmental challenge to date, it is vital that they are well-prepared to cope with their climate emotions in a way that does not prevent them from making change. I surveyed and conducted a focus group of sophomores and seniors majoring in both environmental science and environmental studies at the University of Vermont (UVM) about their prevailing emotions surrounding climate change, how their environmental classes affect their emotions, and if they have coping strategies to navigate negative emotions. While this study is centered on the student experience and does not intend to order professors to teach their classes in a certain way, the data prompts several considerations about affective preparedness in environmental education
