    Multi-order interference is generally nonzero

    It is demonstrated that the third-order interference, as obtained from explicit solutions of Maxwell's equations for realistic models of three-slit devices, including an idealized version of the three-slit device used in a recent three-slit experiment with light (U. Sinha et al., Science 329, 418 (2010)), is generally nonzero. The hypothesis that the third-order interference should be zero is shown to be fatally flawed because it requires dropping the one-to-one correspondence between the symbols in the mathematical theory and the different experimental configurations.Comment: Replaced Figs. 4,5 and caption of Fig.

Aprovechando la experiencia de proyectos previos, intentamos establecer una colonia de F. naumanni en la cubierta de la sede central de la Estación Biológica de Doñana, un edificio moderno y recientemente construido en Sevilla, sur de España. Nuestro objetivo es obtener un acceso fácil a una población urbana y silvestre de esta especie modelo con fines científicos. Después de la liberación de los primeros individuos mediante el método de crianza campestre hace cinco años, nuestra colonia experimental parece haberse establecido.     Effects of Micronutrients during Pregnancy and Early Infancy on Mental and Psychomotor Development

    Spectacular progress has been made in the last decades in the global fight against deficiencies of iodine and vitamin A [1]. As a result, the number of people suffering from iodine deficiency has been reduced from about 1.5 billion in 1990 to about 0.5 billion now, almost entirely due to the introduction in many countries of what has been termed ‘universal salt iodization’. In addition, approximately one million child deaths may have been prevented between 1998 and 2000 by vitamin A supplementation [2]. The political and financial commitment that has allowed these achievements has been generated to a large extent by scientific studies that have shown the extent of human suffering caused by these deficiencies, and that have determined the potential health gains of interventions. Progress in eliminating deficiencies of other micronutrients, notably iron, has been much slower. About two billion people, or about one third of the human population, continue to suffer from iron deficiency. Iron supplementation programs have been advocated for infants and preschool children, largely because of concerns of possible adverse effects of iron deficiency on mental and motor development. Similar concerns were instrumental in establishing salt iodization programs. The questions that will be addressed in this chapter concern the extent to which a shortage of iodine and iron during fetal and infant development impairs mental development, and the extent to which this impairment can be redressed by increasing the intake of these micronutrients. First, the stages of brain development in the fetus and infant will be addressed, followed by an assessment of the timing of vulnerable periods when the brain of the fetus and infant is at high risk of exposure to an inadequate supply of iodine or iron. Where possible, the mechanisms involved will be discussed. Then, observational and intervention studies will be reviewed that have examined the effect of deficiencies of iodine or iron on mental development. Approximately half of the world’s population may be at risk of low zinc intake [3]. Given this high prevalence, inconclusive but mounting evidence that zinc deficiency during pregnancy may possibly impair the infant’s neurobehavioral development and immune function should also raise great concern [4–10]. However, because of space limitations, such effects and those of other micronutrients [11] will not be reviewed in the present report

    DNA methylation analysis of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene in major depression.

    The angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) has been repeatedly discussed as susceptibility factor for major depression (MD) and the bi-directional relation between MD and cardiovascular disorders (CVD). In this context, functional polymorphisms of the ACE gene have been linked to depression, to antidepressant treatment response, to ACE serum concentrations, as well as to hypertension, myocardial infarction and CVD risk markers. The mostly investigated ACE Ins/Del polymorphism accounts for ~40%-50% of the ACE serum concentration variance, the remaining half is probably determined by other genetic, environmental or epigenetic factors, but these are poorly understood. The main aim of the present study was the analysis of the DNA methylation pattern in the regulatory region of the ACE gene in peripheral leukocytes of 81 MD patients and 81 healthy controls. We detected intensive DNA methylation within a recently described, functional important region of the ACE gene promoter including hypermethylation in depressed patients (p = 0.008) and a significant inverse correlation between the ACE serum concentration and ACE promoter methylation frequency in the total sample (p = 0.02). Furthermore, a significant inverse correlation between the concentrations of the inflammatory CVD risk markers ICAM-1, E-selectin and P-selectin and the degree of ACE promoter methylation in MD patients could be demonstrated (p = 0.01 - 0.04). The results of the present study suggest that aberrations in ACE promoter DNA methylation may be an underlying cause of MD and probably a common pathogenic factor for the bi-directional relationship between MD and cardiovascular disorders

    Age-dependent differences in human brain activity using a face- and location-matching task: An fMRI study

    Purpose: To evaluate the differences of cortical activation patterns in young and elderly healthy subjects for object and spatial visual processing using a face- and location-matching task. Materials and Methods: We performed a face- and a location-matching task in 15 young (mean age: 28 +/- 9 years) and 19 elderly (mean age: 71 +/- 6 years) subjects. Each experiment consisted of 7 blocks alternating between activation and control condition. For face matching, the subjects had to indicate whether two displayed faces were identical or different. For location matching, the subjects had to press a button whenever two objects had an identical position. For control condition, we used a perception task with abstract images. Functional imaging was performed on a 1.5-tesla scanner using an EPI sequence. Results: In the face-matching task, the young subjects showed bilateral (right 1 left) activation in the occipito-temporal pathway (occipital gyrus, inferior and middle temporal gyrus). Predominantly right hemispheric activations were found in the fusiform gyrus, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (inferior and middle frontal gyrus) and the superior parietal gyrus. In the elderly subjects, the activated areas in the right fronto-lateral cortex increased. An additional activated area could be found in the medial frontal gyrus (right > left). In the location-matching task, young subjects presented increased bilateral (right > left) activation in the superior parietal lobe and precuneus compared with face matching. The activations in the occipito-temporal pathway, in the right fronto-lateral cortex and the fusiform gyrus were similar to the activations found in the face-matching task. In the elderly subjects, we detected similar activation patterns compared to the young subjects with additional activations in the medial frontal gyrus. Conclusion: Activation patterns for object-based and spatial visual processing were established in the young and elderly healthy subjects.     Distinction of disorder, classical and quantum vibrational contributions to atomic mean-square amplitudes in dielectric pentachloronitrobenzene

    The solid-state molecular disorder of pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) and its role in causing anomalous dielectric properties are investigated. Normal coordinate analysis (NCA) of atomic mean-square displacement parameters (ADPs) is employed to distinguish disorder contributions from classical and quantum-mechanical vibrational contributions. The analysis relies on multitemperature (5-295 K) single-crystal neutron-diffraction data. Vibrational frequencies extracted from the temperature dependence of the ADPs are in good agreement with THz spectroscopic data. Aspects of the static disorder revealed by this work, primarily tilting and displacement of the molecules, are compared with corresponding results from previous, much more in-depth and time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations; their salient findings are reproduced by this work, demonstrating that the faster NCA approach provides reliable constraints for the interpretation of diffuse scattering. The dielectric properties of PCNB can thus be rationalized by an interpretation of the temperature-dependent ADPs in terms of thermal motion and molecular disorder. The use of atomic displacement parameters in the NCA approach is nonetheless hostage to reliable neutron data. The success of this study demonstrates that state-of-the-art single-crystal Laue neutron diffraction affords sufficiently fast the accurate data for this type of study. In general terms, the validation of this work opens up the field for numerous studies of solid-state molecular disorder in organic materials.Comment: Now published in Physical Review

    Event-based simulation of light propagation in lossless dielectric media

    We describe an event-based approach to simulate the propagation of an electromagnetic plane wave through dielectric media. The basic building block is a deterministic learning machine that is able to simulate a plane interface. We show that a network of two of such machines can simulate the propagation of light through a plane parallel plate. With properly chosen parameters this setup can be used as a beam splitter. The modularity of the simulation method is illustrated by constructing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer from plane parallel plates, the whole system reproducing the results of wave theory. A generalization of the event-based model of the plane parallel plate is also used to simulate a periodically stratified medium.Comment: Accepted for publication in Computer Physics Report
